Nope, they can't release a Wii U without the gamepad gimmick, because many games require it to be playable. This just illustrates how bad an idea it was to build the Wii U around that gimmick, basically killed the system on Day One.
Agreed. No one wants to be forced to buy Nintendo's mediocre hardware just to play a handful of games, they really need to exit the gaming hardware business permanently, and focus on software only in the future.
This just shows how out of touch Nintendo has been in terms of the gaming industry/community. They built the entire Wii U console completely around a poorly thought out gimmick, put almost no resources into the console itself, then expected it to be a huge success? Had they just sat down and analyzed how the gamepad gimmick actually degrades the gaming experience, by breaking the focus on the TV while playing, they would have realized that it wasn't a good choice to build the entire conso...
No question that the gamepad gimmick essentially killed the Wii U. It was a poorly thought out device, and Nintendo clearly cut many features out of the Wii U console itself, in order to accommodate the high cost of that gimmick.
Nintendo's many gimmicks (Wiimote and nunchuks, 2nd screen on DS and 3DS, fake 3D on 3DS, gamepad on Wii U) have hugely degraded the gaming experience. Unfortunately, all those gimmicks are forced on their customers, whether they want them or not (most people don't).
If the NX is based on a gimmick, like so many of the previous systems, it's going to be DOA.
Nintendo's E3 this year was a total bust, one game is far from enough to make people excited about the Wii U (which is clearly dead now anyway). At least they could have hyped up the NX, but they didn't mention anything about it at all. They're clearly struggling to remain relevant in the gaming industry and community.
You do know that BotW isn't even out yet? Surely you could have come up with a better example, maybe of a game that is actually out now?
Unfortunately, it's the truth. Nintendo massively scaled back the Wii U base console, to accommodate the high cost of the gamepad. That left the Wii U effectively a last generation console, one that wasn't even able to match the 360 and PS3 on many cross-platform games.
But Splatoon is on a last generation console, so it really doesn't belong on this list. If it comes out on the NX, then it could be included.
The biggest disappointment with this game, is that the graphics are just plain ugly. Generic, dull, sterile environments and characters, with no sense of style and richness. With a budget of over $4 million, they certainly could have done a lot better than they did.
No reason to blame the developer, it's clearly Nintendo's fault that their own gaming hardware is unable to handle current generation games. Had Nintendo put more resources into the Wii U console itself, rather than the gamepad, games like this one and Project Cars might have made it to the Wii U.
How do poorly written, amateurish articles like this one get approved? This article sounds like it was written by an elementary school kid, with simple short sentences and poor grammar throughout. The author's full name isn't even listed, just the name "Jordan". I understand that people need to start somewhere on their journalistic endeavors, but someone should at least proof these types of articles before putting them up.
Uhoh, more gimmicks incoming. Whenever Miyamoto is involved, you can expect plenty of gimmicks ruining the experience.
I don't think Nintendo has learned any lessons from the Wii U. They are continually searching for another gimmick to attract gamers, with every new system they release. DS, 3DS, Wii, Wii U all used gimmicks and all featured mediocre, feature-lacking hardware. NX is going to follow the exact same pattern, since Nintendo is incapable of producing solid, cutting edge hardware anymore.
Agreed. And if you waste a little time reading the actual article, it features very poor grammar throughout. How does a joke "article" like this even get approved?
Or alternatively (and more likely), Nintendo's gimmicks have finally grown old and lame in the gaming community and industry. I know that you were joking, but in the end, the fault for the failure of the Wii U lies squarely with Nintendo, and no one else.
I got this on PS4 at launch, nice little action FPS. Well worth it imo. Looking forward to Shadow Warrior 2 on PS4 later this year, from the same dev.
Thanks for that completely irrelevant comment, which makes no sense at all.
Agreed. Seems like he pauses every 5 seconds to fiddle with the inventory menu, but really doesn't accomplish anything other than equipping and unequipping the sword constantly. Not a good way to demo the game.
It's going to take a lot more than one game to show that Nintendo can become relevant to the gaming industry and community again. They will need to focus on much better hardware, and stop trying to force unappealing gimmicks onto people who just want to play games. I am very doubtful that they're capable of doing that, but we'll find out when they finally give details about the NX.
