Thats how I see it. MS wanted to go full digital but wanted to ease customers into it by still offering discs, thus requiring all their complicated DRM restrictions. They didn't do it smart or plan it out well though. As it turns out they probobly would have been better off going all digital. At least then they wouldn't need online check-ins every 24 hours. Trying to make discs function as digital downloads adds restrictions to those that would choose to go full digital.

If MS policies are "definitive", than so is my decision to abandon Xbox after 12 years of faithfulness and get a PS4.

Another step backwards for MS. First was having non-removable hard drives, now not including a headset. How is the Kinect an adequate replacement for a headset? Maybe I don't want my conversations pushed through the tv speakers for everyone to hear, or have background noise being picked up. How about quick mute/volume control? WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING MS????

I get all that, but how does that necessitate check ins every 24 hours? If you buy the game digitaly you obviously are already online and the game is being verified then. If I'm installing it from a disk then a connection would be required at the time of installation. If I dont buy or install a game in say, a months time, there should be no reason for me to have to check in every 24 hours..to do what, verify games that have already been verified?

Wow is this article grasping for straws. MS needs to tout the better controller, really? As an Xbox fan (former after the One) since the original I've always preferred the Xbox controllers and thought the Dualshock was rubbish, but MS is going to need ALOT more than that to convince me.

My complaint isn't the way the console looks...it won't win a beauty contest but it's not as ugly as the original Xbox. My complaint lays in the inconvenient features of the design. Why did they not build in the power supply? The PS4 is smaller yet does away with the power brick. Why did they not allow for removable hard drives? Since game installs are mandatory on this console 500gb will fill up fast. When that happens your only option is to add on an external hard drive. ...

Why cant my game library be up-to-date by requiring connections only when installing a game? Major Nelson did not adequately answer the question as to why the console must log on at least once every 24 hours, or why you can't keep the disc in the tray as a failsafe. Just more BS

MS would have been better off doing away with physical discs for games all together than to go with what they did. Most of these unpopular DRM restrictions are in place because they want to continue to support physical game media but treat them like digital downloads. They themselves admit we're moving to an all digital future so why implement all these restrictive controls to support a dying media form? MS should have treated physical media the same way Sony is but make digital distri...

Used games are only an issue because MS is making it one. Pushing for an all digital future by attacking physical copies is pointless. Just make digital distribution attractive and all the used game, trading, loaning BS becomes irrelevant.

I'm sure MS will implement a game rental service through live, they would be stupid not to...wait, maybe they won't.

1. Many people are turned off by Kinect and the extra $100 it is putting in the cost of the console. I get making sure everyone has the same hardware but they could at least make it unpluggable. A lower priced sku without Kinect would do much to ensure people buy the system. Kinect appeals to casuals, and casuals do not buy the most expensive console. If Kinect turns out to be so great people can buy it later as an add-on.
2. Used games is a non-issue. The smart way to reduce used...

I completely put the Xbone out of my mind at this point...it might as well not even exist.

Does MS know anything about the console they are planning on releasing in 5 months? They seriously need to consider delaying the release of this console for another year to fix everything.

MS needs to put off on releasing this console for another year to fix all the problems/complaints with it.

Why would MS still use a power brick? They couldn't build it into the system as large as it is and yet the smaller PS4 has the power supply built in? So not only do you have to place the Kinect somewhere, but the power brick as well. Then the hard drive can't be swapped so when you run out of space you have to attach an external hard drive. A giant box with three seperate things attached to it. Way to go on your design MS.

If MS wants to make the push towards an all digital future, than they need to do it smart. Simply, make digital distribution attractive through earlier releases, lower prices, and cloud game sharing. Implementing a complicated and restrictive DRM system to keep physical discs relevant and allow publishers to get in on the used games market is pointless if an all digital future is coming anyway. It does nothing but alienate the consumer. The fact that digital doesn't have any of the cos...

First, get rid of the confusing and unneeded DRM policies for physical copies of games. Instead make digital distribution more attractive through earlier releases and lower prices. By making digital distribution attractive it will become the primary market for games, making the online requirement and 24 hour check-ins become unneccesary. Second, make Kinect an option that can be unplugged and release a lower priced sku without Kinect. Third, admit you were wrong and apologize to your core...

What I've been wondering since the showing of the Xbox One, why? All MS had to do was make digital distribution more attractive. Earlier releases and lower prices for digital copies would have drastically put a dent into the physical market, making the DRM restictions for games MS has put into place pointless.

Point taken. I suppose the seller could get away with it until next time they connect...unless they never plan on installing another game again or go online to play which is highly unlikely. It sounds like alot of the games that will exists on this system will require you to be online anyway just because of the way the game works (using cloud).

This is the problem with the requirement to connect at least once every 24 hours. It's not needed. MS can authenticate games just as well by requiring a connection only when installing games. So in your scenario if the internet went down for more than 24 hours you could still use the console, just not install anything new. I have yet to hear any reason for the 24 hr check-in requirement. MS makes it seem their whole online games experience infrastructure would collapse if someones co...
