The series endures because the basic design is timeless: it doesn't get old. When a game has this kind of design, you could play the same iteration over and over endlessly(If it is the kind of game you like obviously). Each sequel adds a new venue to "continue" your adventure, along with minor changes to freshen it up just a bit.

But that's just it, there is an alternative: any of its sequels.
The only reason this series is succesful is because Activision knows everyone will buy it in fear of being left behind in the old game lobbies.
The difference is that while each sequel is more or less "more of the same", CoD changes even less to the point that the whole game could have simply been dlc or an expansion pack.
I can't speak foe the latest installment, but I do know that MW1 and 2 were not so different that 2 could have simply been a half priced Expansion pack.
Skyrim isn't "Zelda for adults". They are two very different games.
And yes, seeing as how you are on the fence, you should buy a wii. Xenoblade comes out in april, and the back catalouge is incredible.

Investors are unhappy because Nintendo isn't making iphone games. That's it.
Any moron who actually knows anything about games understands that Nintendo making iphone games wouldn't help, and would actually damage the company's image and hurt income overall in the long run, but most investers don't care. They can only see the mad bank these mobile game makers pull in, and expect the same would happen for Nintendo.
It's still working with Sony's Move and Microsoft's kinect.
