very old sounds like it's from 2001 or something.. The software was less than a year old. Sure enough Sony was not the only company with this kind of security - they were just targeted.

The thing might have been hacked sooner, or it might not have been hacked at all; we'll never really know.

Seems like Sony tried to make 'peace' with the hacking community at the beginning of this gen, but in the end when the hackers started crossing the line and attempting to crack the system, they removed other OS. They were mad at Geohot at that point, but didn't sue him - They may have given him warning because he backed off. Well after hackers revealed h...

MS did give a way a free game on the Christmas downtime, but they didn't exactly go out of their way to advertise it (considering Live dashboard is full of adds - it shouldn't be too hard), and it was for a very short time.

Hey then if giving away a free month is such a profitable venture long-term then why didn't they do it before and why doesn't xbox live do it? Sure some of the loses will be covered in renewed subscripions, but not all of them - it's a huge gamble. They're also giving away a free game, not just PSPlus.

Hey MS you guys could be making a lot more money just give us a free month of Live Gold! These guys are on to something.. (sarcasm)

I've found Call of Duty usually runs a little better on Xbox live - but I believe that's largely based on what Activision does. Voice quality varies quite a bit from game to game.

I don't see a lot of evidence that 2012 will be a quiet year for PS3 and a loud one for 360. Sony still has almost all of their studies (now doing 2 year cycles), and unless they suddenly deflect massively to NGP or something weird 2012 will no doubt be another strong year for Sony. <...

Probably should go to one of those sites where the 'unbiased' people lurk. It's kind of tough to argue that point, considering n4g encompasses a huge variety of new sources/opinions; while other sites only give a few. It just seems when you spend time at N4G(not in the comments in the stories) you seem to get a bigger picture of the media biases that really exist.

If the government was going to be billed so heavily after this attack, I don't see why they wern't there the moment Anon declared their attack on Sony; to prevent something like this from happening and jail these guys.

5520d ago 2 agree0 disagreeView comment

The government is getting involved to investigate whether there was wrong doing on Sony's end - We don't know yet. Let's just wait to see what they find before acting as judge. You're misinterpreting the facts.

It is in the best interest of 'security experts' to have this attack to seem to be the fault of Sony. If these attacks cause more damage to corporations, the more they'll invest into security. While they might be telling the truth, it's hard to take them as an unbiased source.

I think in all likelihood they will kick it on, with no advanced warning about 1-2am pacific time not sure which day but sometime this week. They don't want the service to crash because everyones jumping online at the same time, they already look bad enough as it is.

All these articles seem like an effort to change the story from 'Sony is giving out freebies to help try to win back it's fans' to 'Yea Sony's giving out free stuff, but you deserve better and should make sure Sony pays'. It seems Sony can do no right in the media.

Yea this guys argument about PSN+ being given a way a bad thing because he loses his sense of entitlement shows that exactly. You'd have to guess how that sense of entitlement plays itself out in his review scores - because he certainly values it a lot and wishes to protect it, and may wish to 'reward' a company for doing it.

I am a fan how these guys are disclosing every event they attend in their blogs, however this stuff should be mentioned in their reviews - ...

@thugbob

While I do think Sony may to blame here - the fact of the matter is Sony is getting sued for this. The government is looking into seeing if Sony was negligent in protecting our personal info. I think you're jumping the gun on blaming Sony, we don't really know what kind of security Sony had. In time, our justice department will handle this. It's perfectly fair to defend Sony, until we really know there was wrong doing on their side. Innocent until proven...

@IamnSuperman

I agree with you on your assessment, In my college classes for Network security you learn early on that anything can be hacked. The guy is arguing against a pretty standard network security principal.

I don't see why it isn't a good argument that this was the work of determined hackers. If it was so insecure why did it take 5 years for hackers to get to the info? We know recently Sony got tagged as a target for hackers.

I thought the graphics were pretty solid on WKC1, sure they don't have the character models of FF13 - but the game is all together a good looking game.

Well that is true, but that argument completely forgets about all the other services PS Plus provides:

Cloud game save storage
Automatic Game update downloads
Qore online magazine (with freebies/early demo access)
Discounts on a large selection of software.
Free Time-limit trials of certain Full games.
Free Avatars and Dynamic Themes to keep.
Early Beta Access

200 people from their 'online division.'

I'm immediately thinking the Devs that were working on the Agency (that was cancelled) was who they're referring to. Not the computer network technitians which it makes it seem that this might be the case. I'm surprised no one mentioned this.

To get all the info, it seems the guy needed to load a self-signed certificate on his PS3 to get all the info he needed about the servers Sony uses. He found all these security details then just puts it out there for other hackers to take advantage of, then claims no responsibility; like what he went to prison for in the first place.

From what I can see, basically being able to run unsigned code on the PS3 likely is what lead to how the hackers got into the PSN servers. And ...

They gave Anon what Anon wanted, a mention. You can be pretty sure there won't be anymore lawsuits against hackers for quite awhile coming from Sony either.

The PS Plus thing came about when Sony learned another great company had tricked the masses into thinking subscribing for online services on a console for very little in return is actually a good thing.
