"The good news is that the new PS4 is a massive step forward. It packs 8GB of super fast GDDR5 memory and 176GB/s of raw memory bandwidth."

GDDR5 providing 176GB/s was superfast maybe 3 years back, by todays standard its fairly average. By the time PS4 releases it will be Low to Mid range.

Todays midrange GPUs pack GDDR5 that can provide around 192GB/s, by the time PS4 is out most mid range GPUs should be featuring GDDR5 RAM that does anywhere betwe...

Lol at people disagreeing on GDDR 5 prices, specially when i have linked the differences on hardware being sold with even faster GDDR 5 than the one going to release on PS4.

People desperately want to believe GDDR 5 is something new and expensive lol.

@ZidaneNL

GPUs come equipped with GDDR5 ram too, its not something new.

Check out the price difference between a 2GB Model and a 4GB model:

2. Hardware prices vary from country to country, in general looking at the PS4 specs, we can build something simular today around 600usd.

4. How do you know the PS4s CPU wont suck for games development. Its based of AMD Jaguar which is designed for mobile hardware and is known to be much weaker than Desktop parts.

5. Again how do you know PS4 wont run into bottlenecks of its own. You dont know that yet until development starts. PS3 lo...

PCs can be built cost effectively too, so its not a case of the guy with a Ferrari coming to a conversation to brag.

Not everyone has a 1500usd monster PC.

@Vulcanproject

Intelligent comments as usual.

Nevermind Ju, hes simply doing what he does best defend Sony hardware even though he knows hes spewing crap.

@Ju

By that regard PS3 is way more efficient compared to a PC, yet a 5 year old PC with a 8800GTX runs circles around it. Why does that happen? Despite all the console optimization.

Its simple the overheads and bottlenecks you speak of simply arent as sever...

@Vulcanproject

You make very valid points.

What people are not willing to understand, that for 600usd you could easily make a PC that will demolish the PS4 specs.

9 months from now the same 600usd will get you even better specs. PS4 specs arent improving thats a given, its probably set in stone now.

PS4 probably wont be selling less than 500usd for the top model.

So 500usd for a locked down PC(PS4) VS 600usd ...

Dear console peasants,

Shut up. Stop pretending PS4 is coming with some beastly hardware, it clearly is not.

"like most PC devs have yet to learn the words "optimize" and "game-play"."

If by optimize you mean reducing texture quality, AA, AF, making the game linear enough to the point where it becomes a corridor shooter then really there is no need of that sort of optimization. Thats mostly the kind of optimization that goes into console games.

People keep crying about Crysis 1 being unoptimized, when the bare truth is Crysis 1 was rend...

"I take anything Kotaku *knows* with a huge barrel of salt."

Its not a hard feature to implement. Specially now that consoles are essentially PCs.

Check out Teamviewer, essentially does the same. I wouldnt be surprised if you could turn on, turn off PS4 with your Cell phone via the internet and control it.

Depends how much they charge for the games.

I mean it would suck if they charge 300usd for the PS4 yet charge 70usd or 80usd per game.

I would rather prefer the system cost 500usd and the games remain at 60usd.

Of all the people on this site, you seem knowledgeable when it comes to tech. Which is why its a shame when you spill such crap.

Have you ever seen overhead windows does draw from a PC? On a system with 8 gigs of memory its negligible.

I hope you do realise that when a game is running most of the burden is on the GPU. There is hardly any OS overhead on the GPU.

Go ahead prove it to yourself and i really hope you do so you...

When you build a PC you tend to look at as a long term investment.

For example when one builds a machine and later upgrades it. They no longer have to bare the cost of Casing, OS, HDs, Fans etc.

I bought a casing (HAF932) back in 2009, till date i am using the same casing and intend to be doing so for a very long time.

Same goes for my Keyboard Mouse. My Keyboard is atleast 5 years old, i dont intend to change that e...

They may use the Textures etc from the PC version. However the PC version runs at higher resolution aka 1080p and can use much higher AA and still manage above 60fps.

Hence PC version will still be superior.

"PC gamers pay console prices just for a top of the line video card"

Thats a very small fraction of the PC market. Most buy mid range cards, ranging between 150-250usd.

Add in the cost to build the PC and it comes to around 600-700usd for a good one, thats almost next gen Console price, with the ability to play all your old games. I would call that a bargain.

Since when did PS3 versions of games come with configurable graphics. In any case the game most likely will be 720p or below on the PS3.

Upscaling the game to 1080p might actually make it blurry as was the case with Crysis 2 on the PS3. Want to play real 1080p get a PC.

@Raf1k1

Xbox 360 initially did sell at losses. Microsoft charging 50usd a year for XBL has gone a long way in keeping the entire gaming division profitable.

Even today if you will combine Xbox 1 and Xbox 360 financials, MS probably still is in losses. PS3 was a loss making machine for Sony, we can only hope PS4 is profitable for them. However as long as these 2 titans are clashing bleeding each other things do look difficult.

@masterCornholio

If Sony dont sell PS4 at a loss it will probably be an underpowered machine then, designed to profit from day one. Its how Console companies work they always sell at a loss to begin with and with Sony its been a history.

4766d ago 11 agree8 disagreeView comment

Well there are 3 versions lets not ignore one of them.

When it comes to ports generally there isnt much of a difference, since all versions usually use the same assets. PC versions tend to look better because of higher AA and resolutions.

Personally its the Price that makes the PC version win for me, PC version can be had at green man gaming for 37 usd, i think that is insane.

@logicwins

Completely agree, i think the idea of making a building a PC isnt for most people.

Consoles just are plug and play, which makes them an easy alternative albeit an expensive one in the long run.
