For once I agree with the Fat Princess on DRM and while Steam is a great service its also had its issues stopping customers from playing its games as it is a form of DRM.
The game is great, really enjoyed what I've played of it so far but FFS how many times do we have to go through the same old crap with publishers not putting enough money into server support and using the same tired old excuse "oh we never thought it would be this popular" to quote a figure of 400% is ridiculous as its either just a silly marketing spiel or just shows how pathetically out they were with their calculations on server capacity.
I hope the game sells really...
I installed these a few days ago and luckily didn't do any gaming on my PC the night I updated because Battlefield Bad Company 2 arrived early for my 360. A mate friend warned me about the drivers so I uninstalled them early on Friday. Had Supreme Commander 2 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 turned up early I'd have probably been on the phone to nVidia demanding they replace my card although I suspect somewhere in the mumbo jumbo on their site there is a clause saying you download the drivers at...
I enjoyed the demo, it was fun. I don't think its any more simplified than other RTS games out there.
"Reason: there are no fanboys"
Really? look below at some of the poorly thought out comments below. I'm primarily a PC gamer though I do own a 360 and PS3 and some of the fanboy comments below are quite embarrassing to read as a PC gamer.
I've enjoyed the playing the demo, I gave the PC version of Supreme Commander a miss when it first released because of the horrible UI frame around the screen but I'm definitely buying this.
I think if they made a new one they would have to change some things to appeal to a larger audience that might upset fans and not make it Counterstrike any more. I loved Counterstrike, I still have it installed on my PC now but don't play it as often as I used to. I spent an obscene amount of time playing it, learning the maps, the choke points, sniper points and things like how far I could run to get into position before the enemy arrived. The changes I talk of are things like more realistic...
It amuses me when gamers moan about supermarket's and their occasional low pricing for big blockbuster releases (games like MW2 or the FIFA series for example) and how they affect dedicated computer game shops like GAME. I remember the old independent shops that slowly disappeared as GAME's monopoly grew and how they gobbled up other chains like Electronics Boutique, Gamestation and the online retailer Gameplay. They have slowly raised prices and slowly all but phased out support for PC gamer...
I skipped by that generation, I didn't see enough performance boost for the price. Since 3DFx were bought I've stuck with nVidia apart from a brief spell with ATi with a 9800 a few years ago. It was a nice card though even back then there were still games that ran better on an nVidia chipset. I don't see that gap anymore so in a few months when I upgrade I'll be looking at an ATI card for performance vs cost unless nVidia can come up with some competitive pricing assuming the prices we've see...
I can't remember ever seeing a sensibly priced graphics card from nVidia. ATI seems more of a realistic upgrade at the moment though I'm happy with my GTX 260
Steam is a business, its essentially a shop so while the publishers set an RRP and may even set a minimum digital download price so they still keep the high street retailers happy Steam could do a lot more to be competitive. I can buy Battlefield Bad Company 2 Limited Edition as a hard copy from an online store for £24.99 yet Steam is selling it at £34.99. I do like the fact that games I buy off Steam means I don't need to put the DVD in the drive but I don't like it so much that it...
It looks very slick, I like it a lot. Steam needed an overhaul, its style has remained pretty much unchanged since it launched at it was looking a little dated but this new look brings it right up to date and yet still manages to keep a little of the old look so its not a complete change.
Bruce you wouldn't know balance if it walked up to you in the street and formally introduced itself. At worst your site fans the fanboy flames, at best its a viral marketing blog for Microsoft. For someone who has worked in the industry so long you either did not learn much or have not kept abreast of the movement within the industry. As a mature gamer who has owned, and currently owns hardware from a variety of manufacturers over the last three decades and whose only allegiance is to the mac...
Why has this got approved? its not industry news, its not Dev news, its not PC news. What it actually is about is one man's silly feud with a company he wrote a poorly worded article over and refused to retract it. There are no winners in this case.
Without knowing what the other players said its hard to criticize him from a well edited video made by someone with a grudge posted onto the net.
Krayzie Bone> Open zone is that way ----> fanboy, lol adding in the expansion packs nicely pads out that list. You assume I'm a console gamer when I've probably been a PC gamer since before you were just a stain on the bed sheets. I know about the simulations because thats my primary interest though I fear most of them particularly flight sims will be slipping into 2011. I never said they didn't have exclusives but that drawing up lists is pointless.
zagibu> Yes Steam is...
I recently cleared out a shelf of old gems I held on to but never played them, going retro is fun for 5 mins but then you realize how far its come and on the PC you feel you've wasted precious minutes of your life installing those old PC games when you just stick the disc in the drive on consoles. Backwards compatibility is a pretty low priority, if not redundant option for most gamers.
For every PC only title you could compile a list of XBOX or PS3 exclusives so its a pointless exercise there are great exclusives on every format. PC gaming isn't dead but the best? its being ripped apart by piracy which in turn has the developers using more and more draconian DRM which impacts on the honest user. On my consoles I can log in and in seconds see what friends are online, what games they are playing or what games they own. Its all so much easier on the console formats. There are ...
LOL ever since MW2 announced no dedicated server support the gaming sites are obsessed with dedicated support. RTS games don't need dedicated server support and I don't mind having to log in to play the game, I do that with games on Steam and others like Rise of Flight but what does disappoint me is the lack of LAN support. The C&C and Red Alert games have been favourites at the small LAN parties I attend for years along with Dawn of War etc so I am disappointed by that.
I think Natal and Arc will be fun but while some fanboys have derided Sony for making a wand type system like the Wii I think it will work better for general gaming. I'll be buying both systems but Microsoft seem to be penny pinching taking things out of Natal to hit a price point and lowering the quality of the experience it will provide because of potential lag issues. This is typical Sony, keep it quiet, keep developing then release it. Its not all fanfare's and hype like Microsoft.
