PC gamers. Without them the market for constant evolution of cutting edge GPU hardware would be worth a lot less and the demand would be vastly lower. Companies spent millions on developing the latest graphics technology the past 15 years to sate PC gamer appetites.

The consoles wouldn't be remotely as powerful as they have been each generation without graphics technology inherited from PC developed with a great deal of money originating from PC gaming enthusiasts.

I dunno. I don't hate consoles. PS4 and Nextbox will be brilliant for PC because it'll be easier than ever to port games onto PC with better CPU optimisation.

I do dislike people who have no clue what they are talking about though, lap up hype, and make ridiculous statements that obviously are either to incite arguments or mislead ever more unlucky readers.

You can explain something extremely simply on this site but you'll still get disagrees from...

What PCI express bottleneck Ju??? Doesn't really exist yet. You sure you know what YOU are talking about?

"Additional PCIe bandwidth has proven to be generally unnecessary when it comes to GAMING..........but right now PCIe 2.1 x16 (8GB/sec) handles the task with room to spare."

How much memory the DSP will require is debatable and up in the air. It might very well be quite minimal but it isn't free.

That was really my point. You don't get something for nothing. Remember everyone hyped up the ol eDRAM in Xbox 360? 'Free' AA they cried. No, but thats not how it worked lol. What the DSP does is give very cheap video compression, and removes that particular load from the CPU. It can't hide a big stream of HD video from needing SOME m...

'Secondary processor' is inaccurate from that report. What it has is a dedicated coprocessor for the compression and decompression of HD video. Not some magic bullet processor to do everything else. Video. Thats it.

Its a DSP addition. Not some extra CPU....

"A 2GHZ Jaguar 8 Core CPU is going to be doing nothing but 100% allocated to the games"

No, it isn't. This is what I have been saying. Did you even see what Sony were trying to do with their platform? All this multi tasking, opening fully featured HTML5 internet browsers in games, apps in games, background downloading of everything, netcode running inside the OS to allow spectating across all games, directors modes, probable all inclusive joypad tracking via cam...

I'll want to play the console exclusives but even I realise that the best console exclusives rarely arrive at the machine's launch.

It usually takes a year or more before the machine has a nice selection of quality exclusive titles.

If you jump in to be early and see the next gen, then I would point out that PC can deliver next gen style visuals already.

When the console exclusives start to stack up after that first year I would be ha...

The article makes all the usual points, like consoles with equivalent hardware to PC have more performance because of direct to metal access and fixed platform hardware.

Undeniably true.

BUT the key words there are 'equivalent hardware'.

Already any decent PC desktop quad is a lot faster than a Jaguar 8 core, and already the top end cards are a lot faster than PS4's GPU.

This is despite the fact we are probably at...

People, look. No matter how much power you give to devs on console, most of them are going to make their game run at 30 frames a second. Give them 10 times what PS4 has and they'll still only aim for 30 frames most likely.

Theres a simple reason for this, and that is that you, Joe Bloggs consumer, has expressed a wish for better graphics. You have decided that you want great graphics, and these beautiful videos and screenshots.

Most (not all) developers d...

I'll tell you what it will look like.

A small box, probably a bit smaller than the original PS3 and a bit larger than Wii U. Probably black. Holes in it here and there.

Don't worry about the rest of the details. You won't be staring at the box when you play the games it runs.

Guitarded77, dude we know enough to make an accurate theory. This is like someone saying well you can't say for SURE that the Sun's surface is hot because you have never been there.

True, but the vast amount of evidence and knowledge we have accumulated indicate that indeed the sun is hot lol.

We know that the chip is a monolithic part which indicates Sony can't aim for very high CPU clockspeeds unless they want to scrap most of them. We also know...

Performance wise the gap will be significant. Don't know why anyone would try to pretend otherwise.

PS4 is an order of magnitude faster across the board, much quicker CPU, much more and much faster memory and system wide bandwidth, much faster GPU to the order of 4 times at least.

It isn't all about specs. It is about the games portfolio.

BUT if you are talking about specs, then it is ridiculous to think Wii U is close to PS4. It just...

1080/30 will be the limit for high end games. Most devs just don't care about 60 frames, especially outside of racing games. The ones that go for 60 frames will probably also go for less native resolution, exactly the same as this generation.

However in this case even if they go for 1600 X 900 then that's still a noticeable boost over the average res we have of games today. A huge amount of them are sub HD anyway.

I would expect a lot of devs will sha...

I'm not wrong GameNameFame. You are talking about the recording aspects, not actually any of the other tasks and features that ALSO use resources. You aren't very specific at all, so I'll have to correct you on what I assume you are attempting (and failing) to understand.

Any dedicated compression hardware takes the task away from the CPU, but it doesn't remove the fact you STILL need to use some system memory to do it, some HDD bandwidth etc

If you read anandtech technology website who has talked to Sony about the hardware, they confirm it is in fact an 8 core AMD Jaguar based processor. http://www.anandtech.com/sh...

Ports to PC will probably be the easiest they have ever been in the history of console generations.

X86 code for one example will just port over in a flash, and run better instantaneously on modern desktop PC CPUs. Not least of all because the devs will have to split their code to quite a lot of threads for these consoles, which will be perfect for the AMD FX series or the hyperthreaded Intel quads. Going into the future as PC hits 12+ threads in the mainstream it'll be a...

The problem is slayerofgods the comparisons are usually rubbish because most of the people here have no clue what they are talking about.

Take your short note of PS4 having an 8 core processor and PC owners not having so many cores.

So?

Those 8 cores are AMD Jaguar based according to every source. Which means they are very, very slow relative to any full size desktop X86 quad core you care to name from the past 5 years.

Why all the comparisons to PC anyway? PC always wins in the end, consoles can only ever compete performance wise in the very short term.

You buy a console, it stays the same. You buy a PC, you can change it.

Are people that paranoid.

PC has such superior hardware that regardless of the advantages of a fixed platform it'll be able to beat up the consoles be it in 6 months or 12 or 18.

Usually sooner rather than later. In t...
