I'll be honest tress fx looks weird in the game more than it seems natural. It flicks around and seems a bit distracting quite a lot. Not to mention when every other character you see in the game is noticeably less follically endowed there is rather a stark contrast.

I left it turned on but I'm not sure what it exactly adds, apart from sometimes having Lara appear as if she had the spawn of cousin itt sat on her head having random seizures

'Completely rebuilt'

Call me a cynic or call me wrong after it launches but if it isn't just the PC version with a few tweaks to the graphics settings and assets with some control gimmicks lobbed in I'll be surprised. Good excuse to try and sell the game again, we are seeing a lot of these sorta cross gen upgrades

Still a great game though, completed it tonight.

Paid about 6 pounds for the original version on PC and completed it tonight, it's great

I would prefer a world with no men except me and 3.5 billion women.

Now that's a party I would turn up to

A whole three weeks after it has launched!!!!

Oh noes, what about the next 5 years+ we have with it :-O

It's not dead. Its awesome.

Is it a 'better' bet than the new consoles? Maybe not, but its a good bet right now. Its a real safe one, its a quality bet.

When you can build a fairly modest PC that has no trouble keeping up with or beating the new consoles, and one that can enjoy all these classic titles you should add it to your gaming repertoire.

Steam is just wonderful, green man gaming, good old games, gamefly etc etc the deals ...

I read the studio of 500+ people working on a single AC.

Just to put it in simple terms, 500 full time people on an average of 30k a year is 15 million a year in wages alone.

It's not just tooling that has had a huge increase in costs for developers, but the size of studios needed to turn out a single high profile game every year or every two years has swollen hugely.

Big playstation/N64 late era titles were often made with just 20-30 peo...

Particles are perfect GPGPU fodder, because they are fairly simple calculations, but there are just absolutely loads of them to happen simultaneously.

Massively parallel operations then, exactly what a GPU is designed for

They are a PC developer, DirectX.

Basically, Xbox One is very much like that sharing tools and methods.

Therefore it is perfectly reasonable for this PC developer to understand what they know better, than PS4 which is a different programming environment for them.

I said yesterday in the teardown that Xbox One probably had a larger APU than PS4 despite being slower. It takes up more die area but it is effectively slower.

Even without kinect, Microsoft have built a machine that costs as much as PS4 to build but it's quite a lot slower. Wow.

They saved 18 dollars on using DDR3 and a larger die instead of a faster chip like PS4 and buying GDDR5. For a massive performance hit.

Talk about an unlucky/po...

I can take a shot at explaining the APU cost.

Xbox One's APU is probably slightly larger than PS4's.

OR/AND

They don't have a lot of ESRAM redundancy, meaning the chips that have any slight ESRAM faults are scrapped straight away therefore pushing up the cost of making the APUs (basically, lower yields.)

It could even be both, on the basis that a a slightly larger APU costs a bit more to make and will probably aut...

Would love to know what metric he considers it '10 times' more powerful than 360.

Its GPU is only about 5-6 times faster, absolute tops

Xenos Xbox 360 GPU: 240 Gflops
Xbox One GPU: 1310 Gflops

Xenos Pixel fillrate: 4,000Mpix/s
Xbone Pixel fillrate: 13,648Mpix/s

Xenos Texel fillrate: 8,000Mtex/s
Xbone Texel fillrate: 40,944Mtex/s

Its not that easy to spend a little more.

See, everything is on one die. You are limited to how large you can really build a processor by the technological limitations of the manufacturing process.

Because PS4 and Xbox One both pack everything onto a single die, CPU, GPU, memory controllers etc, the die is now pretty huge.

A Radeon 7870 die BY ITSELF for example is only 212mm squared with about 2.8 billion transistors.

PS4 an...

PS4 has essentially a Radeon 7870ghz, with lower clocks (800mhz) and 2 CUs disabled, meaning 1152 shaders, 72 TMUS and 32 ROPs. It also has modifications to its compute performance.

It is most likely ever so slightly faster than a Radeon 7850.

Xbox One has a 7790, but with lower clocks (853mhz), and 2CUs disabled.

This means 768 shaders, 48 TMUs, and 16 ROPS.

It is about as fast as a Radeon 7770.

Also you can't even get an Xbox One in Sweden yet...so...yeaaaaaaaaa.

Good point MasterCornholio.

Penello can say this NOW, but things change quickly in this industry. Microsoft have been flipping those switches like mad the past 6 months after all haven't they?

I personally am sceptical, removing Kinect does actually remove the actual unique point of Microsoft's system, even if it makes the machine a lot cheaper to the consumer.

I would have said it was never going to happen ditching Kinect, but the mo...

6 cores at the moment. Its possible indeed likely that CPU cycles can be freed up later on.

Early in the lifecycle of a console you always want to reserve more resources than you actually need, to cover your bases should you want to integrate anything significant a little later.

But after a few years if you find you have shrank the OS overheads and suchlike, and you can safely give up some of the reserved memory and CPU performance, you do it.

Bluray 6x read is a constant 27MB/s. If the drive runs for over 5 minutes at full speed just installing it should be at least 8Gb read off the disc.

But I don't think thats the problem, I think there has to be a software flaw here, I read reports of people having extremely slow installs far beyond anything that should be happening.

OS bug? Updates problem? Disc errors? Who knows.

Its like I walked into 2006 and the PS3 launch again.

I had massive Deja Vu here. The mirroring of these consoles early fortunes is spooky
