Forza is the one game I would be bothered buying an Xbox One for. I always wanted it on PC, a dream come true so that I wouldn't have to bother with Xbox any more but it seems unlikely.

Microsoft should start up supporting PC again properly with Windows 10 by dishing out some big Microsoft studio titles for the platform. It's a bit of a pipe dream really but hey.

Compare a PS4 game that runs 1920 x 1080 natively capped and then compressed, with an Xbox One version that runs below that- say 1600 x 900. THEN upscaled to 1080p, then capped with no compression.

Chances are the PS4 screencap will probably look no worse, thanks to the fact the original frame started out considerably higher resolution in the first place.

Of course if both games run the same resolution, not having compression will ultimately end with a somewh...

I KNOW compression is not the same as upscaling, but I said the EFFECT is very similar- both introduce some artifacts as the originally rendered image is now altered. Your idea of adding or losing information badly misconstrues the fact that this is what happens either way.

If the screen shots are always taken of Xbox One's display output resolution rather than many game's (lower) native rendering resolution, then you only are capturing said image after post process s...

They said they went 1920 x 800 because it allows them to enable 4 x MSAA. Rather than less AA and 1080p, because they decided the former looked better to them.

I know people will argue that it is 1080p, but that's semantics. You get 800 visible vertical pixels of 'game.' Visible pixels is all that count in videogames, end of story. After all if you had a game where you saw 1920 wide x 1 pixel high and then claimed it was 1080p- it just it had 1079 pixels of black ...

The real question is whether Microsoft allow native resolution shots, rather than upscaled ones, because that'll only end up as a similar visual effect to image compression if an Xbox One game is upscaled to 1920 x 1080 and then saved as such...

I know how it works.

I'm also realistic enough to know they aren't going to aim for 200FPS and 640 x 480 resolution.

They will aim for 30FPS like the other console Witcher game, and then anything between 720p and 1080p.

If anyone really thinks this particular developer, with this particular game would have ever aimed for 60FPS on this console hardware then they are deluded, ESPECIALLY when they have talked for a long time about not ev...

"Why The Witcher 3 Is Not 60fps On The PS4 And Xbox One"

Simple, because they aren't more powerful.

And even if they were, they would just have higher settings enabled like the PC version rather than aiming for 60FPS. It's just not that kind of game.

4134d ago 35 agree8 disagreeView comment

They said 'intensive' which suggests it requires very powerful hardware to run.

A lot of the titles there won't be that difficult to run on a decent PC, but something like The Witcher 3 is likely to need very high end hardware to maximise settings.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain probably won't even be that demanding on PC. Ground Zeroes isn't, it looks quite a lot better on PC than the consoles and doesn't even require a massivel...

The main problem being the more notorious the DRM gets the more talented people would turn their attention to cracking it for nothing else other than the kudos.

Why do the consoles STILL not do anisotropic filtering properly? WHY?

It's such a low cost filter that makes a big difference to textures but it's still not always done on the newest consoles. 16x aniso has been used by every PC gamer everywhere for at least a decade because it really doesn't take a lot of performance. Yet I still see tonnes of console games not using a higher quality! Just the other day I also noticed it is incredibly poor on the Master Chief col...

Golden days died with the PS2 for me. PC has been declared dead so many times the past two decades and yet it's very much thriving even in the face of new consoles.

This shows how strong it has become. Traditionally new consoles signalled a serious slump in PC GPU sales until it picked up later in the console's life, they often dictated the health of PC, but now PS4 and Xbox One launches haven't made remotely the same impact.

PS4 has massively eroded the Xbox market share if one of, if not THE most Xbox associated multi format game is now virtually equally split sales wise over the brands.

It used to be a total Xbox whitewash for COD games- indeed 360 beats PS3 2:1. Now Sony have stolen a huge share back with PS4 so much so it's virtually 50/50.

PS4's architecture ensures whatever Microsoft do inside their SDK, Sony can create something that does the same thing or better on their machine.

Fundamentally and architecturally Sony's GPU hardware is near identical, there is merely more of it in several key aspects...

Arguing about different techniques revolving around Partially resident textures and who has what misses the point that because the GPU hardware is so very very similar.

Not sure what the argument is here.

The last of us is an excellent game that proves consoles can be squeezed over time and create great experiences even as they age, but shows they are still entirely hardware limited and absolutely no match for a good gaming PC visually.

So the argument is....what? You can still make great games on any console even if it isn't as powerful as PC? Yes, that's obvious.

That PC is going to streak ahead te...

"I didn't really expect the PS4 CPU to be inferior to PS3!"

.....at highly parallelised tasks such as this exact thing demonstrated, yes, it likely is. The more relevant thing I saw there with the old hardware is that PS3's CPU is 3x the performance of 360's at this kind of task.

PS3's CELL was extremely good (for it's time, it's design is at least a decade old) at compute. It was stupendously good at it for a CPU because it ...

Even after all these years Halo CE is still the best game in the series for me. It's nostalgia. I haven't played it through in quite a long time now.

2560 x 1440 all high, on a boggo standard 2GB GTX680. 30FPS minimum.

So that's like what, 2.5 times more resolution than Xbox One for similar framerate? Not too bad really. Drivers might help that over the next few months, and I hear the game is somewhat buggy and needs a patch...

Quite surprised.

Largely because Halo 2 is still only an original Xbox game. We're talking about it's original platform being a 13 year old console. Based on a single core 733mhz celeron originally released in about 1999 (it wasn't even that fast in 1999....) and a Geforce 3 with 64mb RAM.

You can run demanding games of that generation and age @ 1920 x 1080 comfortably on smart phones these days e.g San Andreas.

So I wouldn't ...
