I feel sorry for all the brain cells that died reading this
These "events" have been lacking since pre COVID times which is why it's a big deal. This was an E3 level conference.
Yes, if you step back this was a conference with just 2 new first party announcements, little release dates, and then at the end they said they're continuing to go multiplatform. In 2016 this wouldn't have been a good conference but in 2024 it's all we're getting. The bar is low and Xbox crossed it
Xbox is the only company that captured the magic of E3 and the only company that showed a great conference in years.
Xbox is also the only company that has proven time and time again they can fuck this up. But for the first time in a decade I am cautiously optimistic about the brand
People like getting hyped for their console and want to know what to look forward to. There's a reason E3 was as popular with the public as it was.
If anyone takes a step back and looks at 2024 alone you'll see Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, and FF7 rebirth compared to Hellblade 2. Also, both Sony and Xbox only announced 2 new first party games in their shows
I mean the timing is exactly why. Sony shows off a dress up gacha game and a week later Xbox shows off 30+ games. People are now excited for what's coming to Xbox (and other platforms) in 2024 and 2025. Nobody has any idea what's coming to PS5 beyond Astrobot and Lego Horizon and neither of those games are what we'd consider heavy hitters like Fable, Doom, Gears, etc
Sure you can say expectations are lower because it was a State of Play but expectations for this...
Yeah it's pretty bad way to think in my opinion, not sure why certain genres should be immune from attempts at innovation just because a few games rose to the top. My favorite MP shooters are hero shooters. I want the next best thing after Overwatch, not to crown it the irreplaceable king of hero shooters.
I don't think the industry is calling anything an X killer since like Haze. It's all fans/the community putting those labels on things
I remember when The Finals was a COD killer 6 months ago
Concord (with beta announced at SGF)
Until Dawn Remake
Astro Bot
Lego Horizon
Helldivers 2 Illuminate shadow dropped
It wasn't desperation. Subscription Models had a very different outlook in 2017 and then with the gaming surge during COVID reaching critical mass seemed more and more possible.
Phil convinced Satya to chase a trend and it hasn't worked out
@koga88
True, but those same circumstances apply to Hi Fi Rush which is why I used that game and not something else.
And yeah people use Steam CCU cause it's the only publicly shared numbers we get anymore. Obviously it's not perfect especially when there are plenty of other avenues to play a game, but you can definitely compare Steam CCU between Hi Fi Rush, Hellblade 2, and Redfall for instance and make estimations.
Heavenly Sword IP is owned by Sony and Enslaved IP is owned by Namco Bandai
Hellblade was the only IP that Ninja Theory themselves owned when MS acquired them
We know it's Steam peak CCU so far is less than Hi Fi Rush, but it hasn't had its first weekend yet.
I don't think Xbox failed them because they seemed pretty hands off and let them make the game NT wanted to make. Time will tell if Xbox/MS is OK with that
Also from the insomniac leak we know these PC ports are a quick turnaround and budgeted around $2-4 million. At 100k sales they break even including Steams cut. They may not sell millions but they are a great ROI
Agreed. That intro is GOATed
It's been shown at every xbox show for the last 5 years but in the month leading up to release there has been radio silence. I'd argue most gamers don't even know it's coming out next week. It's #191 on Steam top sellers. Compare the marketing Hellblade is getting to Stellar Blade or even Rise of the Ronin.
I don't think the lack of marketing is due to Xbox's lack of faith in the game. It's due to them laying off their entire marketing team ...

The management at Deviation was reportedly a problem. Sony cut their funding and when the studio layoffs began they bought the talent back up
Most people on gaming forums say FIFA, NBA 2K, and Madden are trash too. Do you think they're lying too?
1) release controllers
2) don't release games
3) ???????
4) profit
There are STILL people saying they should buy Sega lol
