There’s a huge difference. Sony generally grooms and collaborates with smaller companies on exclusives before deciding to buy them. Microsoft just swings in with their bags of cash to snatch up successful well-established multi-plat developers and steal business from their competitors.

Honestly, releasing something like Halo infinite mp right before a holiday vacation is bad practice in itself. This f2p model for halo sucks ass, but that's the direction xbox is going with gamepass so staying loyal to the brand means you have to play along I guess. Fanboys will make all the excuses in the world to protect their sunk cost fallacies. I continue to feel I made the right decision by not buying into xbox after the 360 gen.

Sekiro combat is rewarding once you get the rhythm down. I think souls fans try to play it like it's souls, and it is but it's also an evolution on souls. Just like souls it's absolutely necessary to learn enemy attack patterns, but parrying and learning when to strike are critical. Get greedy and you'll get punished. Once you git gud you'll feel like a boss, and like nothing FROM throws at you can faze you.

@strifeblade I agree, but Microsoft is still trailing in the games dept. and has lots to learn from Sony and Nintendo there.

What are you talking about? The network test is between 45-60 fps in performance mode. Anyways, no one's playing this on Xbox because it's not on gamepass.

You have to consider that Returnal released pretty early in the ps5 launch window and the console numbers aren't even there. It was a new IP, new genre (3rd person shooter) for Housemarque, and didn't have the name recognition of Ratchet & Clank. It also had a much smaller budget and team working on it. Sales were actually pretty good all things considered. But yeah, I think commercial success is probably part of the criteria for GOTY. It's just lame because it already won a G...

@TheRealTedCruz What are you talking about? Metroid Dread had the highest grossing launch of any game in the series. Left a longer response on your comment below.

Replying to your comment above. I'm not following you at all. Metroid Dread had the highest grossing launch for the entire series. Returnal is a roguelike, so repetition is part of the design philosophy. It's also far more likely than Dread to get DLC. Dread is also repetitive in that's it's a safe predictable sequel with little to offer beyond what its predecessors did. There is far more dialog in Returnal than Dread. I invested 100+ hours in Returnal, and about 20 into Dread...

I don't think so, it's already won a GOTY award. As is often the case, I think accessibility is being conflated with difficulty here. It is a difficult game, but gets easier with weapon upgrades carrying over and has an aim assist feature that helps a lot. Actually, in terms of straight accessibility it actually has different option for color blind people which I haven't seen in many games. I think lacking a proper save feature at release is a solid argument but that's already...

Hmmm I don't really think Dread was a $60 game though, and don't like the prospect of more $60 side scrollers like Dread. Mercury Steam has the gameplay down, but the atmosphere, world building, music, level variety, balancing etc. are not what I expect from a AAA Metroid. Losing might encourage them to make a better game that actually deserves GOTY.

100% agree. I think sales are probably a factor for Returnal, and would've helped to have the 2.0 save feature at release. On the other hand Metroid Dread was good but not groundbreaking, and basically used the low budget Metroid formula for a $60 AAA title. It broke sales records before anyone even played it to give you an idea of how strong the bias is.

Damn, Returnal got shafted. Typical honestly, fully expect Metroid Dread to win. Meh

I don't think it's a testament to devs excitement for gamepass. They're obviously inclined to sign a 2nd contract if they already singed a 1st. In general, games are not getting more popular and selling more copies after a long stint on gamepass. It probably has more to do with Microsoft's desire to renew, metrics that show those games as a valuable part of their service, the reaction to a game being taken down etc. Contracts are not indefinite, it's just business as usual...

Everything I've seen advertised makes me think the game will be mired in the past and old ideas of success. Their open world model is dated af. Why do I care about the most hours of dialog in a game ever? That doesn't make the game better or more interesting, just more time-consuming and forgettable. If they don't bring the combat, exploration and storytelling up to modern standards of the genre it's going to a gargantuan disappointment.

@Nakiro, first of all its award not reward. Secondly, Cyberpunk was a massively overhyped, overadvertised and overambitious mess, different than ER in many many regards. The Network test gave us a very big sample of the complete experience. FROM soft isn't trying to reinvent the wheel, and gets flack for reusing systems and assets when the reality is that they didn't want to bite off more than it can chew like Cyberpunk did and failed at. I think that gives them slack to get the overa...

No you said story wasn't relevant. Even without a straightforward narrative the story is still very much present and relevant in early metroid games. It's not all combat like you implied and would actually be boring AF without that use of storytelling. The story presented in early games is literally what makes metroid metroid and is why you see all sequels iterating on that story without considering an overt narrative. If story were not relevant, people would probably like Other M mor...

You said story isn’t relevant, and that Metroid’s sorry doesn’t suffer which is not true in my opinion.

1570d ago 1 agree2 disagreeView comment

Total nonsense. Metroid and Super Metroid do environmental and atmospheric story telling that is just as integral to the experience as the action is. Setting, enemies, music etc. are all story elements.
