A waste for you is not a waste for others. You don't care for portability? Then there are very few Switch games worth your time. As for me, undocked, is how I play ~80% of the time. Most of my play time is while my wife watches (insert awful TV show here) or when my son is watching (insert child's show here). I also very rarely play for more than 2 hours at once. Can't say I've done more than a two hour session even once this year.

Aside from the Wii, all of Nintendo's hardware has aged very well. My NES, SNES, and Nintendo 64 still work very well.
My ps1 is also still working. My PS2 and PS3 stopped reading discs. I've sold all of my older xboxes, but they were working when I sold them.
In the future you'll have plenty of options for different consumers to enjoy. No medium is going to replace any other medium as long as different people are willing to pay for different things.
