Dolby Vision HDR is licensed while HDR10 is not and most UHDTV's do support HDR10 although some will do both. Somehow I very much doubt that Sony would put out a patch so that a licensed product could be implemented on over 40 million consoles.

Sony actually did the same thing with 3D on the PS3. Originally the PS3's did not support 3D and it wasn't till the formats were ratified that a patch was made so that you could watch 3D movies via the PS3.

I do have an original PS3 and after the patch, I could watch 3D movies and play 3D games (yes there are some). Of course, I did have an HDTV that supports 3D.

Actually, all PS4's from release could output 4K content from file or streaming service. What they could not do was to support HDR (High Dynamic Range) to devices that supported it. You also need HDMI 2.0 or higher although the PS4 originally shipped with a HDMI 1.4 cable so to make use of HDR you will need to purchase $5 to $20 HDMI 2.0 or higher cable which you will probably have with your UHDTV anyway

Like the PS3 a firmware update was made to support 3D. I still hav...

I could not agree more.

Let's see:
1) PS4 slim - released in a few days
2) PS4 pro - release date 10th Nov 2016 (about two months).

@fromchildren

Scorpio or whatever Microsoft is officially going to call it is supposed to be released Q4 2017 (over a year away). Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

I won't agree or disagree however we are talking about gaming machines and there is a huge difference between videophiles and gamers.

Most movies are in the order of 70 minutes to 180 minutes long and yes there are some that are longer and shorter. Movies are also for the most part passive entertainment in that all the audience has no real control orther than to stop watching. Of course there are people (ie. videophiles) who collect movies but for most people it's u...

Err no!

If you look at VGCartz the hardware weekly chart is dated 20th Aug 2016, in Japan the XBox360 sold "1" with the XB1 selling 47 to the PS4's 18,602. Even the PS3 sold 1,078 and the WiiU 5,234.

What is interesting is the Japanese sales of the PSVita 10,503 (140 in Nth America) compared to the 3DS 27,796 (32,586 in Nth America).

Well, considering I have never purchased a Bluray movie although I have hired some, having a 4K Bluray player is a nice value added feature although IMHO not a system seller.

I only used the optical out on my PS3 until I purchased a 55" HDTV seven years ago with 4 HDMI's in and one optical out then I changed my cable configuration to HDMI in for my PS3 and later my PS4. My 7.1 amplifier still gets optical audio from whatever devices I select via my HDTV.

I have never used the optical out on my PS4 and as I have mentioned I have not used the optical out on my PS3 for years so for me at least not having an optical out on the new Slim (the...

In a multiplay FPS, who do you think will hold the advantage the person with a PS4 and HDTV or the person with the PS4 Pro and UHDTV assuming they both have a reliable fast internet connection?

Answer: The person who is the more skilled.

The above will be the same even if you compare the XB1 against the Scorpio. Graphics and effects are a totally different thing and are better suited to single player games where you can take the time to enjoy the scenery ...

Well, I hope you don't mind waiting an extra year for the Scorpio.

As for buying a 4K TV I would do some homework here since there is a format war of HDR10 (open specs) versus Dolby Digital HDR (proprietory). You definitely need to know which TV supports what (some support both) and what console or PC graphics card will work properly with the UHD TV of your choice.

It's not really the graphics it's the games and what genres you as the gamer likes.

Also, why are you comparing Uncharted 4 against Gears of War? They are entirely different games.

It always cracks me up when fanboys point at graphics and the power of the console or PC when comparing online multiplayer games. Graphics and power are nice, that's a given but in an online multiplayer game you don't have the time to enjoy the scenery or worry ...

Well the PS4 Pro is being released in November of this year while the Scorpio is slated for release a year later.

There would be little chance of the Scorpio outselling the PS4 Pro over the lifetime of the products.

I take it you know that many 4K TV's can upscale 1080p so it would be interesting viewing a game on the normal PS4 hooked up to a 4K TV versus the same game on a PS4 Pro hooked up to the same type of 4K TV. It has to be what is called a "blind test" since even TV's of the same brand and size can display a slightly different picture depending on the settings.

Actually, it's more complex than that you also have to look at the distance the viewer is from ...

@darthv72

The original PS4's support 4K output but did not support 4K Bluray disks since the 4K Bluray specification were not ratified till February of 2015. Even if the Pro does not support 4K Bluray (I was surprised with that) I don't think this will have a major impact although it will have some since there are very few Bluray titles available and the push is for streaming services anyway.

I do agree that getting HDR support via a firmware up...

@Nathan_Hale53

Give new console owners an advantage? How?

Here's the scenario. Imagine two Desktop PC's one can play games at 1080p @ 60fps, the other can play games at 2160p (ie. 4K) @ 120 fps and both have a good ethernet connection. Who do you think would consistently win in an FPS game?

Answer. It depends on the skill of the player, not the hardware. The only time a poor player beats a skilled player is when the poor play...

I assume you are talking about online multiplayer FPS games.

I hate to break it to you but you really do have to worry more about your network connection than you do about frames per second.

If you have a single player game that has little if any online component and requires the player to move their avatar at a fairly fast pace (think single player Doom which is 1080p @ 60fps on the PS4) then of course, the higher the frames per second the better.

My PS4 outputs fine to my IPS monitor or if I wish I can waste about a minute moving it from my study and connecting it to my 55" 200Hz HDTV in my lounge room. Ah! decisions decisions.😉

There are quite a few PS4 games that support 60fps. A quick search will show this.
