To all the people posting about monopolies and lack of competition:

Read the damn article! The author's argument is in favor of a STANDARD for consoles. "Once a specification is agreed, any hardware and electronics companies would then be able to build their version of the console."

This would cause competition. Think about it, there will be different brands of the same console. Just like the authors example of DVD(/Blu-Ray) players. Some have ...

I agree, I remember thinking onlive was going to be a massive fail of an idea, but it seems to be sticking around. So why shouldn't this little branch off of "traditional" gaming consoles have just as much chance of being successful...

I think there will be a definite niche that goes nuts over this thing, $2 million+ raised seems to back that up.

Are you really willing to give up the ability to BUY games at insanely low prices for the ability to SELL games at extremely low prices???

Seriously, a quick look at green man gaming (which has such a trade-in system) shows just how little you can expect to get back for your trade-ins.
From their hot deals category:
-Tomb Raider Anniversary on sale for $6.99, trade in for $0.20
-The First Templar on sale for $21.79 trade in for $2.50
On average...

If this takes effect, $5 Steam sales are done for so problem solved.

Steam may have the backbone to adapt to this, but it's a terrible idea. As stated in the article, this will likely mean the end of Steam's crazy sales and I believe it. I mean whats to stop someone from picking up tons and tons of copies of a game for 75% off, then selling for a good profit once the sale is over...

Terrible terrible ruling, hopefully it gets overturned.

@Muffins

From the article:
"Interestingly, the team got a chance to begin converting their project from Oblivion’s Gamebryo Engine to the new Creation Engine even before the release of Skyrim."

"...they have been working on Andoran: Prologue since sometime in 2009 (we can approximate that from the release of the first Andoran trailer)"

This article is nothing more than unfounded speculation. Maybe if the guy had any solid reasoning I would be a little more inclined to believe it.

There is so much to pick apart in his reasoning but I'll just point out three that stood out to me...

#1 "Blizzard has seen an uproar of gamers who desperately hate the idea of the real money auction house with all of their might"
- Really? All their might? Most of the people I've talked...

For the good of gaming as a whole, wouldn't it be a great thing if a few companies were willing to sacrifice a bit gameplay to test/push the boundaries of what can be achieved visually? I do mean, sacrifice to a point where it's still enjoyable to play.

@ Ashunderfire86

"and DVD movies could be sold for $20 to $30 dollars. Why can't the gaming industry lower the price and still make a profit like other forms of entertainment?"

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for DVD prices to drop THAT low... lol

^ What Keiser said...

Any problem with online connectivity is unique to that specific game. Steam has no online requirements, aside from product activation. Although it may be a drawback if you rely on your cloud saves.

@portugamer
If you only play the first one you won't be missing anything. The second one was a more of the same but lacked the robust experience of the first. If you only play one of them I'd totally recommend going with Bioshock 1 instead.

Also, they aren't linked together. There are no save imports or anything, and the stories are are different between the three.

Definitely, too many people waiting too long for that one.

But someone DID buy the original copy that was pirated too.

Say person A buys a game new, then sells it off to Gamestop or wherever, then say it gets traded back again and maybe another half dozen people own it over the life of the game.

Then look at person B who buys a game (PC for the sake of the argument here) takes the game home, downloads a crack for it and makes copies for half a dozen of his friends.

Tell me how there is such a huge ...

Lots of disagrees coming in but I'm still waiting for someone to actually help me understand what I'm so wrong about here...

I'm not saying that used games == piracy here, just that there are parallels... At least from the perspective of the content developers.

Edit:
Also, that both have been around since the dawn of gaming, and the industry has continued to grow and thrive despite it. So all of this talk about either ruining the gaming i...

@thebudgetgamer

Okay, let me rewrite your point with the one I was trying to make...

"Also talk about hurting the industry, as long as there's been a video game industry there has been PIRACY. "

Both instances result in a person possessing a game which the publisher/developer didn't see a dime for.

True, whatever store you bought the game from got paid, and that does put the transaction a bit above piracy mo...

Same here, and I think that the lack of a second hand game market on PC is at least partly responsible for publishers being willing to offer up sales of 75% off or more on services like Steam. They get paid, and hit/surpass the price point desired by more budget-limited gamers.
