Sales volume (units sold regardless of pricepoint) is not the same as Demand.

I'd recommend a good Economics 101 book. One of the first things you'll come across is the demand curve. In a demand curve, you will see that each product's sales volume changes based on the price. Typically, at a high price, the sales volume is low, and at a low price the sales volume is high.

The PS3 is still at a relatively high price in it's life-cycle, predictably, it's sales vo...

The Trojan Horse has succeeded and walls of Troy are aflame. DVD will be totally defeated in 12-16 months. Just like VHS, DVD players will continue to be available on Target and Walmart shelves for another 10 years at $20-$30 and there'll be large cardboard bins filled with old movies in the $3-$5 range.

Lookout for the Sanyo $199 portable blu-ray player with a 7" lcd (OLED models will cost a lot more!) next christmas.

Downloadable movies, supposedly the...

By your argument, the consumers have more demand for Ford Mustangs than for Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches just because Mustangs have higher sales volume. Here's how you figure out which product has better demand.

Economics 101 for you:

If the Mustang cost as much as the ferrari, which would sell better?

Similarly,

If the Xbox360 cost as much as the PS3, which would sell better?

The answer to those questions tel...

No one would argue that consumers like Wii more than 360. The 360 costs less but gets spanked every day in sales by the Wii.

However, many regular people and analysts are confused when I say that there's more demand for the PS3 than for the 360.

They ask: "isn't the 360 selling more? Doesn't more sales mean more demand?"

Answer: "No. Despite having higher sales than the PS3 after the price-cut to $199, when the 360 was $299, t...

will be forgotten in a few days. Being controversial is a trick that less scrupulous "journalists" use to try to become famous but history is littered with failed journalists who tried to do this but just ended up alienating their audience.

trying to get famous by being controversial and "provocative". Nothing new. Old tricks. Let's move on. Bad press happens. It doesn't matter if this guy did his research or not.

All this does is reflect poorly on CNN and it's editorial chops since the market has shown to be somewhat immune to the stupidities of "pundits" like this and in the information age these articles have an effect for a few days at most.

For example, so many well kno...

They get money from advertisers to put in themed games which are simple and fun to play, yet totally free. Just look at the red bull flying game. Like Wii sports, you'd never pay $60 for it but it's awesome when its free. Now imagine dozens such games. Flying, driving, skiing, whatever etc, all free! It's a win win situation.

With Xbox live, consumers pay a fortune (hundreds of dollars over the life of the console) yet they get a less reliable service with fewer features....

Reality check for Dreamcast fans:

Blu-ray went from catching 15-20% of big releases to 25-30% in under six months.

Let's face it, Sony's trojan horse has transformed the marketplace.

BTW, how are download/streaming movies doing? 1%

Fact: PS3 has higher consumer demand than 360

Evidence: If 360 was the same price as the PS3, the PS3 would sell much better. In fact, when the PS3 was $400 and 360 was $300, the PS3 was indeed selling far better, 35% better. PS3 hardware is actually marginally profitable right now and will be $300 next year. Expect a big sales boost.

Reality: It's Microsoft's 360 that ought to think about closing up shop. Despite being cheaper than the Wii, it's still far...

but doesnt want in included in the calculations.

Reality, most consumers will subscribe to online play. Therefore for a comparison that reflects market realities would include the cost of online for the life of the console as well as any accessories that have attach frequency, like Wifi and hard-drive.

It's fair to say that the average 360 owner spends more than the price of a PS3 on hardware, essential accessories and online play.

Let's put up some side by side shots shall we?

Not only is GT5 pushing 3 times as many pixels per second it's doing so with vastly more detailed and better lit car models, vastly more realistic driving physics, and an overall far better reproduction of what it's like to actually drive cars.

Grid: 1280x720 @ 30fps: 27.7M pixels/sec
GT5: 1280x1080 @ 60fps: 82.9M pixels/sec

The only thing genuinely different and entertaining about Grid is crash...

As a blu-ray trojan horse, the PS3 has already been a success. In addition, it's already proven to sell better than the 360 in both important metrics, weeks since launch (2.5M more at 108 weeks from launch) as well as at comparable pricepoints.

The only reason the 360 is suddenly selling well is because of the massive price drop. Historical sales data shows us that the PS3 has more latent consumer demand than the 360, ie., the market is willing to pay more for a PS3 than fo...

would not work because developers would have to hand code just about everything that is already built into GPU hardware as fixed functions. However, it blows away GPUs in programmable shader operations.

Considering games like KZ2, GT5P and Uncharted already outperform their GPU specs (just look at those ground textures, massive polygon counts and per-pixel lighting), it would be hard to imagine God of War 3 being a dramatic improvement in terms of textures, polygons, etc this early in the lifecycle. More likely the sense of heightened realism comes from superior animation and interactivity.

Having said that, given the absolute miracles those guys performed on the PS2, creatin...

some textures aren't as good as the earlier build. Having said that, it could just be that it's the motion blur that's making some textures in those photos look blurred.

One definite change that I'm not necessarily digging is the reconfiguration of certain character's faces. Some look better but some look worse. The ugly guy (you all know who I'm talking about) is still ugly but those brows are huge! Ratchet huge!

because unlike the PS2 (and PS3) the 360 hardware is very straightforward and easy to utilize. In addition, unlike Sony, Microsoft provided it's developers with superb development tools and plenty of hand-holding, enabling to make full use of the hardware.

In contrast, the PS2 was a nightmare for developers. Even polyphony digital struggled with it. This is why GT4 was so vastly superior to GT3 as it took them years to come to terms with it. One saw similar improvements wit...

The 360, because of it's straightforward hardware architecture and superb dev tools provided by Microsoft, has been fully utilized by many devs. Any improvements from here on in are not technical but artistic.

Even Microsoft said so. They asked if it wouldn't be better to have good graphics now (360) than better graphics later (PS3).

The question isn't which machine is more powerful but which is better suited to your gaming tastes. The fact is that both machines are very different in terms of game selection, features etc. Each one to his own.

JRPGs have not and will never succeed on the 360 platform. It's anathema to those who identify with the Microsoft brand. This is why Microsoft has had to prepay developers to produce JRPGs. The games simply are not profitable at retail on the 360 platform.

The Wii is also a poor market for JRPGs. In fact, very few 3rd party games of any type have succeeded on the Wii. These are casual gamers who don't care for spending too much time or money on gaming.

The P...
