Do the reviewers not play that far into the game?

When the 360 was released, it had a full year with no competitors. Despite facing two competitors from release the PS3 has sold more in it's first two years than the 360 did, 3 Million more.

For most of this year, when the PS3 was $400 and the 360 was $300, the PS3 outsold the 360 by 35%.

After the 360 dropped to $200 (half the price of the PS3!) the 360 is only outselling the PS3 by about 20%.

So given the above facts, ask yourself this question:...

In typical tv watching conditions the LCD blows away the plasma. Simply physics. The LCD is brighter and better competes with ambient light while the Plasma, being less bright (in part due to the tinted glass to artificially increase black levels), and having high internal reflection, of external light sources and ambient light, looks washed out.

The latest LCD's have surpassed all but the most expensive plasmas in all but the darkest viewing conditions by a significant margi...

I'm curious what the escapist would consider an innovative shooter.

If the review is to be taken seriously then surely the derivative gameplay of Gears, Halo, COD, etc would be equally distasteful to the reviewer.

These are the same ones pushing plasma over lcd when consumers standing in front of these sitting side-by-side can see that in normal lighting the LCD is vastly superior. These are the same morons who promoted HD-DVD. What holds these people together is their irrational disdain for the Sony brand and any technology backed by Sony.

So far we've seen LCD triumph over Plasma (as it should, being a superior consumer product), Blu-Ray triumph over HD-DVD, and until the 360 dropped...

PSN has had occasional issues but the difference in quality between P2P and dedicated servers is like night and day. It's shocking that people are still being forced to pay.

The only thing that really shocked me was the reliance on the very last gen technique of using ground textures that instead of being actually normal-mapped are simply static textures that are colored so that from certain angles they look 3D but look wrong from another angle. Really surprising.

Both next-gen consoles have the ability to normal map every pixel on the screen so the presence of this short-cut is really surprising and disappointing.

in the form of HD-DVD and Xbox360 fans.

They never give up. They never go home. They never learn.

The only factor holding back Blu-Ray adoption is HDTV ownership. Blu-Ray players are already at $150 and will soon be profitable at $99.

In two years DVD players will not be available. At that point the market will be able to choose between downloadable HD movies (which will be held back by broadband adoption and speed of broadband) and Blu-Ray. On...

when the ground is destructible, not just the objects standing on it.

Having said that ... I actually agree with the all the journalists that that this looks far better than anything else. The depth of realism goes beyond high res textures and lighting to the intereactivity. As I said earlier, the one glaring flaw is that the floor doesnt appear to be destructible.

but the 360 version is less gimped, probably because the hardware is much simpler to work with. Cutscene animations are good.

People are apparently forgetting how amazing Uncharted looks. Some of the scenes in Uncharted are only exceeded by the best scenes in MGS4, and just about any scene in LBP. Gears 2 is just another generic UE3 game with generic UE3 effects. It still has low poly characters and poor draw-distance. Where Epic did well is in being smart about how they distribute textures. The 360 has 33% less texturing capability than the PS3 so clearly what we are seeing with games like Gears 2 is smart com...

It does not have the best graphics. Not even in the same league as MGS4, for example, or Uncharted. It's just another generic UE3 game without true full range dynamic lighting, limited color pallete, and all the other compromises cleverly hidden with busy textures and bump-mapping.

It does not have much depth to it's gameplay.

The online isn't smooth.

Some anti-climactic moments.

What's with the ridiculous scoring?

Not only do you have to pay for stuff you get free with other consoles like wifi and online but you get one of the least reliable consumer electronics devices ever made.

because it would lose money!

Instead, Sony is waiting till they can lower the price of the PS3 and tap into the mass market before they give it away. You might even see a special edition bundle before then. LBP is just getting started.

Sony's mistake wasn't how they handled LBP but in not making the entire playstation universe revolve around Sackboy. Unlike the insipid over-realistic avatars of Playstation Home sackboys can be true expressions of Playstation...

They are great with cars, planes and home improvement projects but they are clearly out of their depth in talking about computer tech.

There is absolutely nothing in the Unreal Engine that does anything to improve the quality of military simulation. In fact, not a single game made with the Unreal Engine would even come close to being a true military sim. Its like saying PGR4 tech makes Forza 2 a better sim. Nothing of the sort!

Texture quality is dismal. Not even close to the industry standard. Given that games like GT5 and KZ2 are easily the best of their kind in the industry this is a poor effort. One can only hope that these are a little like the early MGS4 screens in that they had placeholder low res textures that were replaced by high quality textures in the final game.

Lighting is also unimpressive.

I am stunned by the sheer beauty of the graphics. The clothes actually look wet and heavy. The skin shaders are easily the best for in-game graphics. For example, you can easily see the subtle undulations on the wrists formed by tendons, veins and muscles or the lighting realistically shining off, as well as through, the skin. Amazing. Add to that the superb environmental textures and it's clear that there isn't a much that Naughty Dog needs to do to improve the engine for their next gam...

The CG had better animation and particle effects.

Also, KZ2 is probably the best looking game in the universe but that's meaningless without good gameplay and the jury is still out on that one.

but the difference is so small that it's unlikely that people will miss them. In any case, being a multi-platform title it's unlikely that it's really pushing either machine.

A better comparison would be Gears 2 vs Uncharted since those games are better optimized to their respective hardware.

They will buy a blu-ray player instead.

Blu-Ray players have far greater market penetration than all the 1080P HD alternatives (like Vudu, etc) combined. It will be ages before significant portions of america receive reliable and latency free on demand HD streaming with HD picture and sound quality. Every new HDTV will at some point be accompanied by a Blu-Ray player.

Blu-Ray has already dropped below $200 and will hit $100 within 12 months. By christmas 2009 D...
