Should Samsung give you a 3 year warranty?

industry average. By your argument, every electronics device should have a 3 year warranty.

The reason why Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years (only covers specific types of failures) is because there was a fundamental flaw in the design of the product and they were trying to avoid a class action lawsuit.

This is a blatant smear and a very poor decision by the BBC. To feature a show that intentionally misrepresents a product written by someone who works for the manufacturer of a competing product is just bad judgement. I can understand that they want to get attention by being controversial but to gain controversy by being intentionally dishonest 1) demonstrates a lack of integrity 2) invites lawsuits.

Having said that, inserting this kind of propoganda in generally respected new...

meagre attempt at specular lighting. The lack of proper specular lighting is one of the great failings in Forza 3's visuals. The polygon models are fantastic but the lighting is simply atrocious.

Shaders visibly lack sophistication. Given the large number of artifacts and inconsistenct of the lighting it really seems like they are using some kind of post-processing hack rather than traditional pixel shaders. Perhaps good enough for the average user, however, and that's what...

Is that white patch above the rear wheel of this Ferrari supposed to be lighting?

Whatever short-cuts they've used for their lighting system it results in some truly bizarre artifacts.

The lack of proper specular lighting continues to surprise and disappoint.

what I've been saying for a long time ... that Microsoft has been bribing japanese developers to produce games that, if not for Microsoft's payments, would never have been made for the 360.

Despite all of Microsoft's payouts to secure games like Blue Dragon and others they have failed to meaningfully expand the appeal of the console outside of what the original Xbox achieved.

and you can't call the police in time then you must attack first. If you unintentionally kill the intruder then so be it.

Having read the story, it's apparent that the student ample time to call 911 and should have. The student went downstairs with the intent of avenging the loss of his laptops. He first chopped off the guys hand and ear. He should have stopped there and called 911. The intruder was going nowhere. Instead he then speared the guy with the sword.

It takes very little to incapacitate a man using a sword. One swipe across any part of the body is enough to make a man, no matter how crazed, to drop to the ground and beg for his life.

The intruder was totally cut up and one of his hands was nearly severed. Clearly excessive force.

I congratulate the student for doing the right thing and using the sword on the intruder but after winning the battle and defeating his adversary he kept slicing away. He turned what ...

$400? Microsoft has a very low opinion of consumer intelligence and they are right! Add wireless and 3 years of live and you're looking at $650!

Awesome.

"Regardless, we can both agree that an 802.11g is more than enough for gaming and streaming"

As for the following:

"but I think our contention is on the benefit of the 802.11n over 802.11g. Doesn't look like either of us are going to agree with the other, so I'll be the first to agree to disagree and move on."

We actually agree on this as well. 802.11n is better for certain things and as good as 802.11g for everything else. Th...

1) while it's true that 802.11n offers higher theoretical speed at a farther distance than 802.11g, it makes no difference for online gaming because online gaming on live and PSN work just fine on 802.11b. Switching to 802.11n will not make online game even slightly better.

2) The advantage for 802.11n over 802.11g is only at extraordinarily long distances where 802.11g might not reach or have trouble maintaining a connection. I use an old Linksys WRT54G. I live in a huge br...

If you noticed an improvement in your download speed, it could be for a lot of reasons but it's almost certainly not because your new router is n rather than g. If your friends all have switched to n for gaming then they most certainly would fall into the "idiot" category. Just because a lot of people make silly choices doesnt mean it becomes a good choice.

Take it from a guy who creates software for a living and knows his tech:

1) Online gaming for...

with filtering because there's always a way to get stuff through. Those kinds of things occur through well-formed networks and all it requires is a temporal data encryption protocol to fool any filter. It's easy to block content from firefox or ie but not from a custom client. If their goal is to fight kiddie-porn there are much better and more effective ways to do it. This, like "family values" here in America, is just a political stunt.

to make people pay a lot of money for something that won't make even the slightest improvement to their gaming or download speeds.

It has no benefit over 802.11g for nearly 100% of the population, and for most people, it has no benefit over 802.11b.

Only a tiny number of people have internet connections fast enough to make anything faster than 802.11B useful. Even g is overkill for gaming. All you need is good old-fashioned 802.11B for relatively lag-free gaming from any room. Online gaming like PSN or Live doesn't required a lot of bandwidth. Lag results from latency, which has nothing to do with bandwidth. The reason people moved to g is because there's less chance of frequency interference from other sources like phones and microw...

"to spend time with the family" means they are being "asked to leave."

This guy screwed up the 360. While anufacturing continues to have significant problems, on the presentation side, despite a fundamental redesign of the OS (including blatantly copying from the Wii to make it appear friendly and accessible) the product still doesn't appeal to the general public. It's still the niche product that the old Xbox was. In other words, Kim, after all these yea...

Sounds like this guy is something like the "family values" politicians of the US who preach small government while simultaneously trying to use the government's authority to take away our freedom and choices. The flag-waving morons who support for such politicians are too stupid to realize this blatant contradiction.

The article should have really been about why a researcher would hack the 360 GPU to run simulations when there are simpler, cheaper, faster, and legally accessible alternatives for GPGPU applications.

Any non-slim PS3, for example, would be cheaper, allows plug and play networking, effortlessly swappable industry standard hard-drives, and a faster available programmable processor.

The 360 is a very bad option for research. You have to hack just about every as...

Best Buy's happy to get the free money while Microsoft continues to blindly throw their ample cash reserves at problems since money's just about all they've got. No vision, no leadership, just running through the same money losing cycle over and over again ... just spinning (pun intended) in place like a hamster in a wheel.
