i get what he's saying, though i think that should apply more toward western games, i feel japanese storytelling has different conventions and handles things like that differently.
i think valve plays their storytelling the way he's saying it should, and i think valve and irrational are some of the only developers to have done first-person narrative perfectly.

i agree, the archery has been pretty annoying with a controller. i mostly use melee, which i prefer the controller for, and the menus only make sense with a controller.
i'm definitely in the same camp as you though, i think anything first-person is better with mouse and keyboard. this is a rare exception for me, mainly because i'm playing a warrior focused on melee combat. i play most modern third person games with a controller, like assassin's ...
yeah, the shadows definitely suck. they're blocky and super aliased. the only way to improve the quality of the up-close shadows is to decrease the distance to which shadows are drawn, so it's a trade-off until the mods come.

it's gonna be a good few years before i consider investing in another console, regardless of when they come out. my xbox broke, so the next one is out of the question for me, i simply don't trust microsoft to build quality hardware and i don't want to feel like i'm renting another console for 3 years. i still love my ps3, and combined with my sexy and upgrade-friendly PC gaming rig, i think i'm set on the home gaming front for a while.

okay, i'm guessing they're just ignoring the PC for the best graphics category, and i can ignore that, whatever. but what does "best original game" mean? i would've assumed it was a game that wasn't based on any existing properties from other media, but batman is right there.

frankly, i don't even know why i'm on here instead of playing the game. though i guess prolonged exposure to awesomeness can cause cancer, so intermittent breaks are recommended.

Seriously though, I know this is a console comparison, but I was surprised at how good the PC graphics are. With such a small installation size (less than half of even mw3) I was worried that all the assets would be low quality, but it looks damn gorgeous. With 2 gtx 460's I'm able to max it out, but it gives my rig a run for its money at certain points. Not to mention that the art itself has way more gravity than any of the technical properties, everything...
while i personally love steam and have rarely ever had any problems with it, i support this argument. a game shouldn't require any programs besides the game itself. if i didn't love steam, i'd be pissed off too, just like i was with origin and battlefield.
i didn't see the clip, but my main concern is that the narrative won't be poignant enough to justify what this sounds like. what i mean is, seeing a child die in a movie like schindler's list would be much different from seeing it in a michael bay movie.
obviously "game of the year" is all about personal opinion, so here are my personal front-runners out of the games released thus far:
portal 2, witcher 2, deus ex 3, arkham city, and uncharted 3. i'm guessing i'll be adding skyrim to that list, and hopefully AC revelations as well. i have yet to play dark souls since i want to get my money's worth out of demon's souls first, but i'm glad to see a lot of people mentioning it here.
am i the only one who actually enjoyed the campaign? yes, every criticism i've read about it is completely valid and i agree with pretty much every one. but i still enjoyed it. it's no half life 2 or bioshock, but i never expected it to be on that level. and when i think back, i certainly enjoyed it more than any call of duty campaign since 2.

This shit's starting to piss me off. All the preorder dlc and online pass BS, I'm sick of it. Nothing like punishing your legit consumers. I'm sure in a month you'll be able to pay $5 for an unlock key for the content you already own if you don't preorder from the right place.

I think it was marketing. I saw a ton of R3 commercials, but they all seemed to promote the Move over the game itself, which is liable to make customers unfamiliar with the IP think it's a move-only title. Only rarely did I see a short TV spot that focused on the game itself, and it barely provided any info at all. Also, did anyone else notice how Ted Price was never seen promoting the game? I thought that was weird, especially since he was all over R2 pre-release.

this makes sense, physical copies require physical resources to produce, i personally think all digital media should cost less than the physical product. obviously that model can still be manipulated to rip off the customer, but at least it's a little more logical.
