"Is 2008 Really the Best Year Ever for Video Games?"

"people still hate them for doing exactly the things neccissary to win"

But they evidently don't hate them enough to not buy from them.

"you never hear peopel say "boy I hope Wallmart puts some more small busniness out of business this year so I can buy that crappy dvd palyer which is 15 dollars cheaper than standrd in east bumf*ck! woot!""

Actions speak louder than words--surely you've heard this idiom before.

"Whys No More Heros on there?"

Evidently, it made the article creator feel like a loser. And if he wanted that, he could have saved himself fifty dollars and just bought a mirror.

If you don't intend to ever actually beat Okami, here's the intro movie to the last boss (Spoilers, obviously). It may or may not give you a slightly better appreciation for Yami. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

And if you want, you can see the whole fight at these videos. http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Well, there was that guy who escaped from prison in Germany by hiding in a cardboard box...

Hmm. They got the top two entries exactly right, and the obligatory presence of FF7, though still nauseating, is at least relegated to more-deserving spot, which is more than most of these lists can claim, but the omission of Suikoden 2 is rather glaring. That's easily the coolest PSX game I own.

"Overall though, the case for a game like Okami is not strengthened even with the additional Wii sales - a port got the go ahead, but a sequel never will."

:(

A more accurate title of the article would perhaps be "Sarcastic Game is Definitely Worthless Site."

I don't know what a "real FPS Gamer" is, but it is pretty well-accepted that most PC gamers are not big fans of console shooters. In large part, this is due to the fact that consoles have generally inferior graphics, and gamepads are a less precise aiming mechanism than a mouse.

Of course, to a degree, that ignores the larger truth, which is that most PC gamers don't like console games in general.

I'm a little apprehensive toward Mad World, since the way it's shaping up it's either going to be one of the greatest games ever or one of the cruelest, most crushing disappointments ever. The more I see, the more my usually cynical expectations raise and the more it seems that there's no other alternative: even if it's "really good", it will be a catastrophic let-down.

"First, you need to know that the Wii will never be anything more than a funny looking little box with a controller that looks eerily like some sort of adult toy"

Ah, a nice start. Recycled arguments from Summer of 2006. I remember those. Hey, remember when everyone was laughing because Nintendo was calling it "Wii"? Fun times.

"As pointed out in Wagner’s article on Gigaom, Nintendo has specifically said it wants nothing more for the Wii...

Um, a couple things.

A. That source is focusing on a single month.

B. That source is over a year old.

C. Please explain how this: http://media.teamxbox.com/d...
"360-74%, Wii 17%, PS3 9%"

leads to this conclusion: "basically in terms of cash brought in (not profit) the wii is dead last"

Actually, a Zelda game coming out next year isn't entirely unfeasible. Twilight Princess came out in November of 2006, so at the very least, a late '09 release would give them a solid three years of development time.

Plus, when they delayed Twilight Princess an entire year for the Wii version, the only real work done at that time was mapping Wii Remote Functionality to the controls, which isn't exactly a job that requires much time or manpower (a couple of programmers, tops), ...

As much as I'd like to, I really can't bring myself to disagree with this sentiment. Last generation, we already had gems like ICO, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, and Rez. With the exception of maybe Portal and a few games offered via downloadable services, I can't really come up with a single console game on the same level as any of those games.

That's not to say there haven't been some solid games this generation, but I still can't shake this feeling of disappointment in the poten...

Eh, that was more or less my reaction to the PS3 list. To each their own, I suppose.

I'm not really certain what this article's trying to say. That "some newspapers" (a grand total of two, if I recollect) believe that Mad World's going to hurt Nintendo's reputation and are honestly more worried about it than Nintendo is? That Australia's run by a bunch of conservative dipsticks who pride themselves on their own ignorance? That Mad World will *probably* not be released there as a result, or if it is, will be severely censored?

Because none of that's ac...

Game of the Year: None of the above, but of those offered, MGS4 was the least underwhelming.

Best Downloadable Game: Very difficult choice here, as all of the options were fantastic and vastly superior to all of the GOTY candidates. World of Goo by a *slim* margin.

Best New IP: Not counting downloadable games, Little Big Planet.

Best Game to Play Intoxicated: Smash Brothers Brawl. Not on the list, though, so Burnout Paradise.

Best Wo...

I don't really understand Sega's strategy here. People have been saying since Adventure that they don't like non-Sonic gameplay. Do they think that having Sonic get bigger and engage in platforming and beat 'em-up segments is substantially different from introducing a new character and having the new character do those segments?

I mean, Sega, I know you don't want to make a game that might result in people saying that there's not much variation in the gameplay, but, um, just do...

Do people actually use reviews to determine whether or not they should buy things? I was somewhat under the impression that most people read reviews for the style and prose rather than the actual opinion of the game.

For instance, one of the most popular reviewers is probably Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, of Zero Punctuation fame, almost never likes any of the games he reviews (I can think of only two, maybe three instances in recent memory where he was actually really pleas...
