Unfortunately, this has probably got some truth to it. Depends what you mean by "portable". A netbook is portable, sure, you can carry it anywhere very easily, but wont be very powerful. I think what he was looking for was something that has the power of a desktop but can be carried around easily enough.
I have a HP laptop and it's the best laptop I've ever owned. Really good build quality and great performance for the price I paid. It makes sense that if Microsoft wants to show off PCs at their best, they'll pick ones that are good quality.

The only reason MS used DVD9 in the 360 was because at the time, neither BR or HD-DVD were established formats and were VERY expensive. By the time the next generation comes along, prices will have dropped sharply. It'll almost certainly be a BR drive, probably one capable of reading more than 2 layers as well (not that it really matters).
Imagine if, heaven forbid, BR lost the format war? The PS3 would still be around, but manufacturing costs for both BR disks and drives wouldn'...

In the US, it's a different story than the UK. Over here, the average price for a BR is about £15. If you're lucky, you'll see them for £10, but that's still wildly expensive compared to their DVD counterparts, even for brand new releases.

I think the PS3's job of solidifying Blu-ray's position is pretty much done. It's the dominant HD format and there are now players out there cheaper than the PS3 (Yes, I know the PS3 is a "better" player, but if you're not a gamer, a cheaper player isn't really a problem and if you're a HD freak, chances are you'd go for a better player than the PS3 anyway).
Now they just need to "win" the battle against DVD. How about dropping prices of the films a bit?
