HDMI is mainly needed for copyright protection on next gen movie discs. Obviously only the 360 users with the HDDVD addon would feel that they absolutely need HDMI.
In any case though, it's still a nice thing for anyone to have because it is easy to set up and the best cable connection out there.

I don't understand why Microsoft didn't consider a self loading disc slot like the ps3 or wii have. Historically the disc tray is the one of the most common parts of a device to malfunction, so eliminating that risk is where the rest of the industry is heading. It certainly would have made the Elite sku more elite than the other skus.
