They combined xbox one and xbox 360 sales which while still a little unfair balances it out a little better than you pointed out.
I think the point the author is making is that if we can consider nintendo in trouble based off hardware sales then microsoft must be also since the wii u isn't to far behind the xbox one on its own.

I think it has something to do with maslows hierarchy of needs. It's a part of why we play games, part of that sense of accomplishment we get from finishing certain tasks.
Time was that this was a private thing, we played single player games just for our own satisfaction but now with the trophy/achievement systems in place we get to show out accomplishments off in a pretty vein attempt to get approval from our piers rather than just a sense of accomplishment.
I always believed that games were getting easier and new gamers didn't want to much of a challenge and then dark souls ended up being pretty popular.
That changed my opinion.
If net neutrality isn't put back in place or something similar you can forget streaming media and games through the internet.
Games consoles will be here to stay.

You would think microsoft would release a feature like this exclusively on windows phone hoping it would be another reason for people to switch to them instead of android or apple.
If they do this it will be one more reason why not to buy a windows phone and it will also show how little faith microsoft have in their ability to sell windows phone to a broad audience.

In terms of gaming news, net neutrality trumps the console wars and resolution gate in terms of importance. I am at a loss as to why articles like this don't get more attention and that nothing is being done by the industry to stop this.
Look at the xbox one for example. Had they not changed their 'always online' requirements something like this would completely destroy the console....
Yes it has cortana but it also has that windows 8 interface... I'm not seeing it.

Believe it or not there are people who love the xbox brand but hate having to pay extra for kinect and are holding off on the system until they don't have to pay extra for it anymore.
It's not them expecting free things it's them expecting value for money and at $500 the xbox one though they have much love of xbox isn't good value of money to then simply because the kinect is worthless to them and many gamers.

I have acknowledge that the playstation also had a hefty update but it was not required to use the systems primary function and that is to play games.
In my situation the only viable next gen console is Sony and that isn't my doing its microsofts.

One theory I have is that the UK price cut is to test how well a price cut will effect the number of xbox ones sold.
Due to the online nature of the console over time xbox live will pay for any loss no matter how big microsoft take on xbox one sales... If they move enough units. Relying on this strategy in that case would be very risky.
