There's a difference in not being able to tell the difference and being satisfied. Most people don't have 1080p's, so they're not going to appreciate that quality jump. When you add over 50 inches... well, I think you just proved the point.

The article mostly says they're satisfied. They just answered that they don't appreciate it enough to spend several hundred dollars this year.

"Both are can do parallel processing but 1 sec (21 cores) compared to 180 sec (2 cores), that means you need 360 cores to match it (theoretically)."

Err... yeah. That's precisely why I said this said little to nothing about the power involved. It causes people to think in way to linear of a manner. If one of the ps3 cores is assumed to be 21 times slower then it would calculate to 21 seconds by itself. Whereas the single core of the duo would, like you said take 360 s...

It definitely does matter. The ps3 os is optimize for the threading that the cell excels at. The os is going to affect how things are processed, how large the free memory footprint is, etc. It makes a huge difference.

Like how something like Unreal works on Vista vs. Linux. Night and day.

Ah... but you could process two games at once.

Like... have a Dance-Frag-Revolution O_o

I want one. (either a single or a cluster will do.) :p

I do think the cell excels at this, but... the numbers here don't tell us much in terms of benchmarks/ps3 using 20-30% of its power.

One Core 2 Duo (no ghz mentioned) took 3 minutes, 3 ps3s with multiple cores (not just two) did it in a second. Impressive. But sorry, that says very little other than that 3 of them are much, much faster than the poor, little computer by itself. We aren't told the operating sys...

Oooh! Oooh! *raises hand*

Oh... wait. I only own a wii. Guess I can't be biased. Except... then you'll say that I only like it cause I have no other option. Seriously... I know people like to hedge their bets, but I don't think having another console makes people's opinion invalid. If it does we could certainly say you're biased towards the others. (Especially since you're willing to get bitten twice by MS.)

To answer your question. Yes, I'm perfectly happy with...

The porn industry is largely online now. I doubt they're going to have much to do with it.

*edit* also, dvd really didn't have comparable competition. Look at how long it took them to overcome a visually inferior product. Physical storage space (dvd case size) was probably one of the biggest reasons for adoption. To be fair, vhs did have one advantage: Recording. Something that consumers still desire and something this gen (like dvd's) fights against viciously. Which is part of...

In regard to price drops, it depends on how customized the hardware is.

Moore's law (that hardware prices are cut approximately in half every year) applies mostly to very mainstream ubiquitous hardware.

For example, the emotion engine was obviously a problem for sony. That's because sony's pretty much the only one who created demand for it. So prices didn't drop as much. A lot of console hardware is so customized that it drops incrementally instead of swiftly li...

I think they mostly want size (screen), reduced size (footprint[mount it on your wall]), and having it look pretty at the store is some incentive.

But for most there's not much incentive to buy a hd mediaplayer for it. They already have an SD one and it still looks pretty (to them). Most people never even cared whether their dvd player had progressive scan. That's what you're dealing with...

In short they're just not interested. Especially not for $500 in an unsu...

That might be true, except Sony's just getting into the black, where Nintendo's already there by at least $75.

So while it might take them a little longer to get to $150, they could probably go to $175 in almost no time without loss. Whereas Sony will almost certainly be loosing money with such a move.

And $399 is still not that attractive to mainstream consumers.

Probably not. Doubling or quadrupling clock speed, etc. doesn't equal double or quadruple performance.

We'd all like to just boil it down to pure numbers, but it's not that simple.

"Upgrade to an OS that will not support 99% of the software the user need to use."

For 90% of users, 99% of what they need to use is a word processor and a web-browser (and not of any particular brand or type.)

A small amount need things like photoshop, video apps, ms office, or (and this is the big one) custom business apps for their small business.

So I'd agree that Vista Pro is necessary. Vista Home, however, is simply not needed by th...

Well said.

This is the best justification of hd for a gamer outside of improved resolution (and because of it). It only makes sense.

The future is last January apparently...

Wii's had it since then, shortly after release.

Nope. I'm not forgetting that older gamers can buy their own consoles. That's apparent. What hasn't been apparent to me is this new trend of gamers having their own little private christmas party for themselves. Face it, no one buys themselves a console for christmas. They are different consoles but they compete for the same consumer dollars. Let the console leaders wink all they want about it, they know that every $250 spent for a wii forestalls or aborts a PS3 purchase or two.

"yes, Nintendo is selling like mad, but in the end, graphics always woo people over gameplay (what makes you stop and stare at a game on display while in the store, than it's eye-grabbing graphics?). the X Box 360 is the Playstation 3's closest competitor for graphics, as well as gameplay (the processors in both machines *FAR outpace anything the Wii is able to do)."

Disagree.

Might be a couple reasons...

1. They might not have the silly thing paid off yet.

2. They might have only bought it for form factor/size.

Why doesn't everyone only watch the imax versions of movies?

That's what this analogy lacks... Halo may be good now, but star wars is still remembered fondly 40 years later (even in spite of George Lucas' sillyness). Maybe Halo will be remembered that way.

I doubt it though. It's just my opinion, but halo is visceral and "now" not lasting and resonate. It's fun. People will look back on it the way they now look back at Mad Max, Platoon or other action blockbusters, etc. Fun, even great for its time, but not a timeless classic. ...

From what I can see the capacity seems to be the same but with cheaper costs, which is good.

No official word on whether firmware updates will be enough to fix existing players, which is bad.

The latter negates the good news in the former if true (or at least negates it for early adopters). It'd be pretty bad if all the ps3's in existence suddenly couldn't play many bluray discs...

Risk - the problem with that assumption is that they give away far more than their tax liability.

I dislike Bill as much as most, but he does do (what he sees as) some good that way.
