from cnet: 1080i vs 1080p
"To be sure, both 1080i and 1080p offer exactly the same amount of detail, the only difference is that with a 1080i signal, your HDTV will need to de-interlace the signal. So the only reason you'd want 1080p over 1080i is if the HD DVD player offered better de-interlacing than your HDTV.
The simple answer is yes, 1080p output can make a difference, but it depends on what TV you have. For example, we used Silicon Optix's HQV HD DVD t...
"is just limit the apperance's you can give your character....of course there could still be perverts running around, at least they cant act out their sick fantasies there.
you should be able to make your character look from an adult to middle aged would be my guess. "
This is such a interesting topic. For example, what does an adult look like? There are women who are 25 who look like young teenager. Is it wrong to be attracted to them? Conversely, ther...
That is sticky.
If all that was done was avatar simulation then it starts to fall into the gray area of thought crimes.
"should NEVER "get their kicks" as you have stated and virtual expressions such as this desensitize the attacker to the truth of his/her sick and vile fantasy."
Hmmm... interesting. I'm really not trolling here, but how that statement different than what censors are saying about Manhunt?
Again, not saying that Manhunt should be banned or that this is right, but if games desensitize, they desensitize, period.
I shall watch this t...
"Blu ray need not do anything
PS3 owners buy BD discs
HD DVD cannot counter millions of new ps3 owners this XMAS.
HD DVD is almost gone in EU and is non existent in JAPAN"
I hope the BRA listens to you, at least long enough for this to become a stalemate and til the only option is dual format. I don't have any preference for either, but this war is ridiculous.
If the BR camp was really as sure of things as yo...
The numbers in the article are a little weird. For example, I might be new to vg stats, but how exactly does Halo get a 110% attach rate? Do we buy it twice to keep one wrapped? Do we buy it to resell on ebay? Do we return a bad disk and still count the replacement as a sale? I may be wrong, but it seems fishy to me. I'd welcome more complete info.
Here's the breakdown of Nintendo's financial data just for N. America (no pure US data, sorry, but either the Canadians or the Mexi...
"the cracking/protection game is going to be a moving target"
maybe... hasn't worked too well for software and firmware-based content providers like Microsoft, Apple, Satellite TV, Tivo, etc. in spite of easy ways to update encryption...
I wasn't familiar with the Canadian aspect. Apparently "DirecTV Canada" is selling and broadcasting to Canadians illegally in order to try to gain marketshare. There's more here: http://www.directtv-advisor... Canadians don't like U.S. satellites pointing their direction or stealing sales from canadian companies. Understandable.
As far as I know DirecTV's encryption in the U.S. hasn't b...
I'm sure they have great security, but a lot of people have tried such things before (Tivo for example), it all gets hacked. The only think of one instance in the US that is extremely popular and hasn't been hacked over several years and that's DirecTV.
I think the article nailed it. I was impressed. Like you said, hardware is a part of it.
More than that financial considerations are in play: 1. Burners and media are pricey (as has been said in this thread) 2. ...
Using gamers to pass consumer protection legislation. The original DMCA was "special interest" legislation, this is just making it a tiny bit more fair to consumers.
At some point the media conglomerates have to realize that we won't just continue to buy copies of things just because it gets scratched. The current law only works to prevent soccer moms from backing up their disney dvds before their kids scratch them. Pirates get around it and will always do so. It's ti...
And that can be clearly boiled down to developers and publishers not jumping on.
Seriously, look at that first year 360 list under 90%. Is there really much that you want?
In the top (90 or above) the wii's fine and in clear competition with the others. For the 80%, like I said, developers haven't even put out decent sports ports/shooter ports up to this point.
It all comes down to preferences. I look at that list 80-100% for the 360 and 2 maybe 3 ...
I remember a quote I read once that said that Americans would put up with the loss of most any right (speech, press, religion, etc.) except the right to consume.
It's sad if true, but at least then there's something left.
"Who said MOST ppl are switchin to HD in 2009? Most ppl where? US federal regulations won't require ppl to buy an HDTV."
I'm not sure where this comes from. Anyone with cable/satellite has no incentive to switch. Of those who won't even pay for cable (and are in the lowest income bracket), how many are really going to spend a bunch for a 1080p plasma? There's no incentive at the mo, and they may simply not have the ability. A set-top converter at $50 is still much mor...

9 games.
You're right though, it'll be interesting. Three weeks before the 360's anniversary it had 22 titles over 80%. It added ten more in those last days. With the month that's scheduled, Nintendo could have an even bigger gain, making it very close to the 360's first year numbers. Seems impressive to me given that 3rd parties didn't push the wii at all on launch.
What'll be more interesting is the higher ratings. Above 85%, the 360 only had 5 games at this t...
"All people buy is the right to use it, not the right to change it."
Pffft... when it's in my house I have the right to do with it what I please.
Now, nintendo doesn't have to continue to give me services, etc., but that's a different matter. But there's nothing illegal (as of yet) about modding. EULA's are not binding, and nothing else can obligate a consumer to an agreement they didn't sign at time of purchase. (Opening the box, plugging in, etc. don'...
"I don't think anyone from IGN, 1up, Gamespot etc could/would be respected amongst their journalistic peers from other industrys. The same cannot be said for the top music, art or film critics.
Time for this business as a whole to grow up."
Complete agreement here.
I doubt they will though. There's really no need to. They (the bad ones) are playing the crowd fabulously. They love to hear that they started flamewars on n4g, etc. That's fa...
I'm sure that, eventually, they'll push physics on the ps3 further than the wii can handle. Not sure if they have yet.
AI's another matter. AI's been able to be done as well as it needed to be for years. Just look back at games that got bad reviews because they were literally just too hard. Humans aren't going to beat a computer in a fair fight on the CPU's territory. What's improving is how intelligent the sprites look. When a sprite runs into a corner and keeps running, some...
I've disagreed with this article quite a bit, but there's one area where I agree with them.
Positives and negative shouldn't have to be quantified into exact scores of 1 point each that adds up perfectly to the final score. A game can be much or much less than the sum of it's parts. We want everything to be logical, but videogames evoke emotional reactions and those are even harder to score.
Not everything needs to add up.
Most people can't see it, eyes checked or not, or won't notice it unless it's explicitly pointed out by a videophile. 95% of the people don't even care if their dvd player is progressive scan.
The facts are that most people who buy hdtv's don't have 1080p. This won't change until 1080p sets reach reasonable prices. In that way it's a lot like blu-ray. You can spout declarations of fact/stats all you want, but in the end it just doesn't matter to Joe Consumer.
