"Nintendo does have a history of creating artificially high demand for their consoles (along with other shady business deals) so it's nothing new for them."
I wonder why all the other console manufacturers are so incompetent at it then? I mean, obviously the CEO of Sony America wanted that when he offered a $1200 bounty per PS3.
It's great to say that Nintendo might be doing this, that's just opinion. But Nintendo would still be fools to be doing it in ...
"Who wants to buy a game and have to come home and figure out how to swing the controller to play it? Thats nothing that I want to do."
So, let me guess, you hated learning baseball as a kid?
Good point.
With all this talk about immersion into lifelike graphics it's sad that the complexity of the controller can become a "fourth wall."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Hope that we'll get past that soon.
Not just the Wii, btw. It's the 40gb PS3 for $139 and the 360 Arcade for $99.
Fab deal all around.
You're right.
This is exactly why Nintendo did all this... so that consumers could walk into stores with money and walk out without handing any of it to Nintendo.
Creating artificial demand is tricky. You do want there to always be at least a couple on the shelf, otherwise it's counter-productive. This has never been the case with the wii. So either Nintendo is the longest running successful console maker and the most idiotic at the same time or that argument is ...
"To new gamers who don't want to take the time out to learn the controller is complex but is that really our problem?"
Yes. If an industry isn't growing, then it's dying.
Perceived complexity is just as damaging.
For example, I run sound sometimes at events and I've trained people to do it. The thing about mixers is that they look like they have several hundred buttons/sliders which is daunting, but really it's just 7 or 8 buttons/sliders repeated 16-40 times depending on your mixer and a group of other main controls/effects. One person can easily get a grasp if they understand those first 7 or 8. The problem is that, with every game, (besides f...
I love this line of reasoning, because some of the same people who say "Wii = PS2 graphics or less" also say that they can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p and that everyone else needs their eyes checked.
I'll just quote DubC, cause I really don't feel like typing it myself, "You do know that the Gamecube was more powerful than the ps2 and that the wii is more powerful than the gamecube, right?"
Nice, productive reply. :D There's always someone around here that wows me with their eloquence.
"Graphicsaly???
Is that a serious question?"
Nah, the real question is who's Graphic Sally, and can I meet her? ;)
"However, art direction can make a game look good without needing all that power. Look at Okami. WOW, what a breathtakingly beautiful game. Look at the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Look at the Super Mario Galaxy. The games look great! Not because it uses a supercomputer, but because of the art direction/implementation." ;
Great points. Okami is a perfect example, as is WW. Every puff of smoke in WW was interesting and stylistically pleasing.
"Also, not every stunning next-gen game should be realistic. Look at Ratchet & Clank PS3, Viva Pinata, Kameo. They look good technically and have outstanding visual and artsy look."
Exactly. Though R&C is going down the route of making cartoons look realistic. I think it's sad, for example, that every american animation house is going to CGI only. Look at the masterworks created by Miyazaki. Look at Watership Down or some of the older disney films. The route w...
Depends on your goals.
If realism is the goal, then I doubt the wii can match things.
If pure art/design is the goal, then yeah, it's all in the hands of the developer to be creative and produce something fresh and stylistically interesting.
I, personally, have found realism to be a boring art concept since I graduated ninth grade art class. Especially with computers it would seem like we could move forward to something new instead of copying the l...
"My system is probably only around the 2500 dollar mark all together."
Wow... I think I see why there's such a disconnect from the general consumer in some of these discussions.
I don't know anyone who has spent more than a third of that on a home entertainment system and I live in the 3rd richest county in the nation. :) Now I know a few who spend that much on golf clubs, sweaters, a pair of shoes, etc., but I don't include them in the general public a...
That's great, man. Since I'm the only one with any other opinion in this, I guess I'll respond.
I don't disagree with any part of the features that you listed for the pseye. I don't disagree that the ms cam is far inferior to it.
I simply fail to see how this demo makes use of ANY of those features. I still believe that any photocell cam with identical resolution and contrast could do this. Now, other features of the pseye may make it easier for it to do this, it...
"So, you're not fooling anyone by trying to act like, you are just "curious" if its the cam or just software, and providing links to other "similar" products. You're just hating."
Yep. That's me. Just hating.
If no one cares how it's done, then why are a third of the posts talking about how innovative the cam is and how lousy the opposition is? I love the idea, I just don't fall for marketing speak. That's partly because it's my busi...
or it might be cheaper (than the cost of development) to just wait for dual format players...
You're right. The wii couldn't currently do this.
The weird thing is, as far as adding content to a game that's drawn by you... I keep mentioning Crayon Physics, but really, check it out. Anyway, when people started discovering the game, one of the first things that was mentioned was a port to the DS.
I know I'll sound like a troll for even mentioning it, but that's the first thing that came to mind with this for me.
*edit to PS360* Yep. 't'is a g...
Ah well, that's the trick, isn't it.
Should be very soon if hardware is the main factor in enabling it. Might be longer if this is mostly software-based.
"Baseball isn't
a video game and thats a ridiculous comparison."
Ah, that's where companies get into trouble.
Entertainment is entertainment. Doesn't matter if it's a pickup softball game, a broadway show or hunting. There are only so many entertainment dollars to go around. Fun is fun and people will vote with their dollars. If "looking stupid" like you think you do when you pick up a wiimote was so unpopular, then karaoke would have n...
