This has sold the PS3 for me. I was interested in others like FFXIII, but this game alone justified a purchase. Just waiting for an official release date. It is somewhat true for one aspect.... I don't think, for example, that most people care if they don't get picture in picture or other advanced features, but a simple updated encryption is vital.
Most non-tech people will be taking their players and discs back if they have to burn a firmware disc every time there's a security update. Manufacturers will have to start mailing discs out to consumers just to keep decent relations... Not having wifi or some plan for updates besides...

If anything, they've been hit and miss on adoption, not innovation.
I remember wanting those little portable tv walkmans in the late 80's so bad. A lot of their products have been fab ideas, Beta/Trinitron displays/3.5" discs/Minidisc all come to mind. A few failed due to draconian controls (Minidisc/Memory Stick) and some due to price (like the little TV portables I mentioned), but overall they've done alright.
