Yeah since cross-gen periods are apparently going to last several years at a time anyway, mid-gen upgrades are a bit redundant. If the Series X/PS5 are going to be supported 3 years into the next gen, I'd rather just have that next gen start sooner rather than prolong this one.

Yep. People who unapologetically ignored massive framerate issues in TOTK (and Elden Ring for that matter) will be right there ready to say that FF16's performance issues make it a chore to play, if it has any drops under 60fps.
Gosh, imagine what's going to happen to Starfield if has framerate drops anything like TOTK.
Not to mention TOTK drops to low 20s fps almost everytime you use certain powers or get into even moderate combat, but no one mentions it, but if a Playstation or Xbox game has even moderate drops from 60fps it's "broken" and "unplayable."
Well, the next time you are complaining about a game being $70, just remember that you automatically thought "budget garbage" when a game was priced at $50.
Disappointing to see Bungie going from leaders to followers with an extraction shooter. I'm not a huge fan of live service games, but at least with Destiny they were setting the standard, rather than just jumping on a trend late, like they are now.
I buy all digital but I want physical to continue being 40% of the market because we get better sales that way. Prior to digital becoming a viable alternative, used copies of physical games would sit on shelves for years only getting minimal discounts. Once digital really got established and we started getting PSN flash sales, etc, physical prices started falling a lot faster, and stores like Best Buy offer much better sales than they used to.

Bingo. I'm not saying the online game critics in the 360/PS3 era were perfect, but at least most of them had a long history with games and had some level of credibility to what they were talking about. Now so many of them are just people who have played games for a few years and have spent much of that time with a single live service game.
This is the most accurate take I have seen. Spiderman 2 looked great, but we knew about that and it's coming very soon. The show needed one more big reveal after the Spiderman gameplay - ideally a major first party single player game, so people have something to anticipate after Spiderman 2.
