I believe MS have shovelled 5 billion dollars (and counting) in to the Xbox project. I think they would have pulled out by now if 5 billion in the red was a big issue.
Xbox and PS3 is far more important to MS and Sony than just games - in fact I would say games are almost secondary in the long term plans of Sony and MS with their consoles.
Sure, the games market is huge and growing, but it's all the other bits you can push on to customers where the money is ma...
I don't think it's necessarily 'harder' to program for the Cell, it just comes down to a few simple things, which are all wrapped up in business decisions.
- Profit vs Budget vs Time vs Tools
To make a game takes time; time costs money; the better the tools the quicker a game can be made; the less time it takes the less money it costs and the lower the budget is; the bigger the install base and the lower the cost of development the more profit can potentially be ...
£299.99 is a nicer price for PS3 - I see it as a starting point though, as it really needs a game bundled in to make it worthwhile... however the £349.99 60GB with 2 games is a fantastic deal.
I just picked up two 60GB versions (one for me, one for parents). Considering the games bundles include any two of either Heavenly Sword / Motorstorm / F1 / Resistance it's not a bad deal at all.
It'll sit nicely with my Wii and 360! :)
As I've posted before....
"Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3" - Phil Harrison, Sony, December 2006
So what's Sony's 'core valu...
So the boss of PlayStation UK stating they have excluded it is not reputable?

And GAME is unlikely to so prominently advertise the lack of BC (hardly a selling point), along with most other reputable retailers (Gameplay etc) if it were not true.
If BC gets added (if possible) later then great, but for now PS2 games won't work on the 40GB model... but y'kn...
Personally I'm not to bothered about the loss of BC. It just means anyone who owns a PS2 will have to keep hold of it if they ever want to play old games. More than anything the loss of BC is an inconvenience.
But the issue I have with it's loss it because of statements like this... It falls in to the 'Rumble is last-gen', 'no multiple SKU's' statements we've seen.

Nah Daxx... MS got Marathon in the deal (or maybe before that) from what I heard/read.
Also, I believe Take 2 originally had a big share of Bungie, and were given Myth and Oni when MS bought Bungie.
So bottom line... we'll be seeing some brand new IP's from Bungie (or maybe they'll do a deal with Take 2 to produce Myth IV or Oni 2 - fingers crossed for a new Myth game)
I'm not defending MS, but I think a lot of people on this site (and many others) take things way too personally.
It's not like MS is running a sweatshop; it's not like Bill Gates comes down every day and cracks the whip over the employees. MS is a business, a big one just like Sony and just like Nintendo.
Bungie wanted more autonomy and in this situation both sides win... MS no longer have to financially support Bungie, but still keep the Halo franchise and ha...
I see your point Relin, but I have to disgaree.
The Core is almost £100 cheaper than the Premium, (and each comes with at least one game), so there's real savings to be made.
With only £50 saving between a 40GB with NO games, and a 60GB with 2 games I'd have to question anyone's logic buying the 40GB.
Most people will buy at least one game with their hardware purchase... so adding on another 39.99 to 299.99 takes it up to 339.98 - only a ...
I agree Jinxstar - £299 for a BR player is great value. I still think anyone buying it is a little crazy though! :)
If you take the average PS3 game as being 34.99 (online), and 39.99 (highstreet) you're saving between £20 and £30 and getting an extra 20GB in HDD capacity (which could be handy when the PVR features launch).
A person could trade those two games and probably get enough money back to buy a BD movie.
Just seems an odd...
It will be interesting to see how this plays out at retail.
As someone in the market for a PS3 this Xmas (two actually), the rumoured 40GB £299 unit was looking good to me... but this announcement is kinda curious...
For £349, you get a 60GB PS3, 2 Games, and some BC
For £299, you get a 40GB PS3, NO games (maybe retailers will bundle something in) and NO PS2 BC AT ALL (confirmed on CVG website)
So why would anyone bu...
Now that's more like it...
Looking back through my console purchases I've pretty much paid £299 or close for everything back to the PS2.
So a £299 PS3 suddenly becomes a great proposition, especially as there's one or two games finally starting to appear that I want to play. Just a shame they aren't bundling in DualShock 3's - that would make things perfect as I really hate the idea of buying more controllers next Spring (and even more if Touchsense ev...
Nice knob gag! :O
I just can't see Microsoft letting Bungie go... after all, they OWN Bungie. Perhaps the 'more complex' issue is that senior devs are unwilling to stick with Halo and threatening to move on, which would essentially make Bungie worthless again.
So perhaps Bungie are given more leeway, but still watched over by MS. Perhaps Bungie are free to make games (Myth 3 please) for other platforms...
If Bungie become independent (shareholder buyout), but with some sort of ...
Whatever happens (and I doubt MS will let Bungie go), I hope Bungie make another Myth game. That was an awesome series and needs bringing up to date. The multiplayer in Myth 2 was unsurpassed for a long time.
I agree with this. There's a lot of iconic game series and characters, but few memorable locations.
I guess gaming is more about moments, rather than places. Possibly because in most games we are focused on our characters and the situations we are thrown in to. Also, it's hard for developers to direct players in specific ways outside of cut-scenes... A player may pass a spectacular landmark a hundred times, but if their attention is not directed towards it then they may not f...
Having just completed the solo campaign I'm thinking maybe this was just the best Bungie could do. Maybe another developer might have managed to squeeze more performance out of the 360. Just because Bungie have Microsoft's money doesn't mean they have the talent in every area of development.
Halo 3 is a fantastic FPS in terms of solid gamplay, near perfect controls and a great overall experience. Then throw in multiplayer and you DO get something special... but I don't think...
Any chance you could let me know what the site was you were on? :)
I could do with some mature conversation about gaming.
All this fanboy ranting does nothing to show the gaming industry as anything but full of immature haters.
I'll start off my comment by saying I don't own a PS3, but do own a 360, (which is a fantastic console)...
But I have to say there are no decent games on 360 that provide BOTH intense experience and a lot of enemies on screen at once... at least one that is exclusive to 360 or are AAA titles (Call of Duty 2 is good and Medal of Honour Airbourne was a great demo - but neither are exclusives).
Other areas which are lacking in the 360 library are the 3rd person adve...
So possibly a Brand New IP, and maybe a PS3 exclusive title is not a 'big announcement'?? Jeez, some people.
Any new game from Capcom is a big announcement to me.
