MS have a problem...
They have the cheapest console on the market - but are still being heavily outsold by the Wii, and for most of '08 also the PS3.
They have a console that seems to be plateauing in terms of graphics.
So what do they do?
If they continue to support the 360 I think the PS3 will eventually trounce it in terms of quality games, and eventually even sales.
If they produce a higher spec Xbox in the traditi...
Games are all about the experience - whether it is fun, emotional, relaxing, or whatever.
So every 'game' should be reviewed on it's own merits. The best reviews are those that are objective and unbiased - the worst are those that pre-judge a game or enter the review with nothing but comparisons against a supposed 'market leader'.
For example, reviewers compare every sandbox game to GTAIV - but in my view GTAIV is not a good game. The last thing I want is a narr...
Lets hope it plays as good as it looks!
Really depends on what games are out!
In order, over the whole of 08, I would say I have played....
PS3
By a huge margin - played through a lot of old games again to get Trophies, all multiplats bought on PS3 this year, loads of PSN titles, and a few exclusives.
DS
Mainly JRPG's, and various quirky games
PC
Was playing WoW until I quit shortly after Lich King launched. Would probably have played it more if my ma...
I don't want to get in to an argument about sales figures - but when you look at total PlayStation Brand products being sold - Sony are doing fine and the longer the PS2 keeps selling, the better for Sony.
Sony make a profit on the PS2. Sony make a loss on the PS3.
Why would Sony want people buying a PS3 to play PS2 games when they could buy a PS2 (making them a profit).
Plus there's a fair chance that in a couple of years or so those people who bought ...
I can't really understand why any one would think that DD and Blu-Ray and DVD can not all co-exist.
We've had DD games for years now and the high street shops are still doing OK.
The quality of DD films is not up there with Blu-Ray yet, and until they are equal I don't want downloads. Also there's the issue of network speeds, they need to be fast enough to stream the movie for playback almost instantly.
I would be more tempted to use a DD service ...
Hasn't GT5 always been nothing but a tech demo!! :) /jk
Still waiting Sony! Hasn't Polyphony added enough minor variants of Imprezza's and Evo's yet!!
Seriously though. GT5 in 3D with a decent force feedback wheel would be a sweet experience. But if they release only one game in 3D - it should really be Wipeout - that would be a sick (literally!) and awesome experience! :)
For the first time since in my gaming life (which goes back a lot of years), I'm not sure I'm going to bother buying all the major consoles in the next-gen.
Nintendo have blown it for me. I don't care if the Wii2 is High-Def and adds some sort of brain control device... They've shown the types of games they are now making, and they no longer appeal. I've had every major Ninty console and handheld and bought both the Wii and GameCube on launch day so it's sad to say that Ninty ...
I must admit I was very sceptical of Blu-Ray as a movie medium. I have a couple of older films remastered on to Blu-Ray and the quality isn't really there (such as Blad Runner Directors Cut).
I had also rented a few titles, and not really noticed a huge improvement.
However with the release of titles like Wall.E and Dark Knight - I have to say my mind has been changed. The detail and vividness of the production, and the audio quality is seriously impressive.

So, in Microsoft's opinion their consumers DID want the now extinct HD-DVD format, but DON'T want the successful Blu-Ray format?
Ok.
Personally I'm on the fence about KZ2 until I play the demo, and read a few reviews.
I doubt MS are overly worried. They always have that 900lb Gorilla of their own... Halo.
The 360 brand has grown around a few core franchises. Halo and Gears. They have plenty of other good titles, but in general the 360 will always be definied by those two IP's - sales figures reflect this.
To me, the Playstation brand has always been about variety and innovati...
The PS3 needs saving?
From what?
Shark attack?
Massive damage from giant enemy crabs?
Natural disasters?
All I'm seeing is a growing number of AAA games which are making the PS3 a better and better purchase.
And after all those great games I'm also extremely happy to have a Blu-Ray player (I was a sceptic at first, but have been convinced it's a major step up from DVD).
What else am I seeing? My medi...
Considering I loved MGS4, LBP, Resistance 2, and Motorstorm 2 I can safely say it was the year of Sony.
Those titles, and others such as WipEout and many other PSN and multi-plat titles made my PS3 gaming much sweeter than my 360 gaming.
Fable 2 was fantastic but flawed, and not a huge improvement on Fable 1. I'm just finishing off Gears 2, but have found that although it is probably the best looking game I have ever played it is actually a bit boring.
...
This is true.
As the article states... MS seem to conveniently forget they are being soundly trounced by Nintendo!
Just because MS and Sony have similar products doesn't automatically mean they should be compared.
Nintendo are in exactly the same marketplace.
In terms of price MS are more comparable to Nintendo - so why wouldn't they compare themselves by that measure!?!
It comes down to company style whether they want...
This is more for info and education, as I'm not going to accuse Sony/MS or Ninty of doing this... But there are many ways to interpret sales data with out breaking the law.
We all know the old 'sold vs shipped' argument, but there's many more ways manufacturers can twist figures.
For example, one method, is called 'stuffing the channel'. This is where you ask retailers to hold more stock than they know they can sell in a period of time.
Retailers ...
@ Fishy
I took 'normal manner' to just mean we'll see it as part of a normal Thursday update.
Are they going for a simultaneous world wide release? If so I would imagine we'll get the demo in the same week it is available on the US PSN Store - rather than when the US pre-order codes get sent out.
Regardless of when the demo launches I won't be buying KZ2 until I try it out. GG are still an unproven developer to me, so no matter how good the game ...
A multiplatform Metal Gear FPS it is then!!
Or maybe Metal Gear Wii - I can just imagine Psycho Mantis saying... 'Point your Wiimote at the screen, and using the power of my mind I will move the cursor'.
I think it's a tie.
The 360 had an awesome 2007, and I played some seriously good games. The PS3 wasn't as strong though.
In 2008 I played much more PS3, and until Gears 2 and Fable 2 my 360 was gathering dust.
In terms of straight up AAA titles I think '07 may have edged it. But overall I think I've played more fun games in 2008 across a wider number of genres.
I've also played more varied titles. Developers trying to do different things ...
What I really like about the article is the sign off of... 'I tell you I love my PS3 but how much can a guy take, stuff like this keeps happening and dare I say that the XBOX 360 and Wii start to look a lot more inviting.'
Like some sort of veiled threat to Sony that the guy will 'defect' if he doesn't get a resolution!!
How quickly people forget the issues with Microsoft's Xbox360 DRM. And the fact it is still a huge faff to transfer licenses.
Value is in the eye of the beholder.
To me the PS3 looked like poor value when it launched.
When they dropped the price to £350 shortly before cutting the PS2 BC in Europe I decided it was good enough value to pick one up.
Ideally I wanted to pay about 299, but I decided that PS2 BC was enough of an 'value' feature to be worth picking it up.
Considering I bought a launch 360, WiFi adapter and an extra battery pack and charge...
