This article is lame.
Comparing the sales figures means nothing. The GameCube failed because of a lack of third party support.
It's sad when people have to reach for any numbers and twist them just to create an article.
The factors that lead to the failure (and I use that term loosley as I loved the GameCube) are not the same as the situation the PS3 finds itself in.
Why would EA comment on something so ridiculous!?
Harmonix and Red Octane split... Activision got the name (and Red Octane), while MTV/EA got the brains and talent of the outfit - Harmonix.
I've said this before and I'll say it again... MS have played this generation smart.
By launching early they've shifted the sync between them and Sony and in the process given them a great formula in terms of 'winning' the console war.
By the time the PS3 closes that 8million unit gap there's a good chance that MS will be gearing up to launch their Next Xbox.
Just as Sony said 'The Next-gen starts when we say it does'. MS are in a position to say ...
Apologies for misinterpreting Firstkn1ght; your comment read as if you were referring to the hardware.
Anyway, you are right about software profitability; the 360 has a huge attach rate.
However, this is what genuinely puzzles me...
...how can a couple of publishers come out and say that the PS3 is netting them more profit. That doesn't make sense.
I dunno what the latest attach rates are - or even how they are calculated (for exa...
Well, I'm sorry to hear you're missing out on titles like Person 3 FES and Persona 4. Certainly not casual games.
Not every game is about the graphics. If that was the case the DS would not be selling in such massive volumes - and that handlheld has a helluva lot of hardcore games (like the re-released Final Fantasy series, Advanced Wars, Dragon Quest etc etc)
EDIT: Plus I would add that there's a growing number of people in the industry claiming graphics are s...
Zhuk... I don't agree with many (any of!) your posts, but I like the way you write them!
It's a good point you make.
Sony have done two things in this industry...
1. They've set a benchmark for console lifecycle.
2. They've set a benchmark for units sold.
The above facts help and hinder both Sony and MS.
Against point 1. MS are going to struggle. The Xbox wasn't profitable so was killed. The 360 has it's faults and from a price point of view it can't go much lower - so MS are looking at a much shorter pr...
I agree reaper,
It seems strange that most people on N4G would probably class themselves a 'gamer' rather than a 'fanboy'. And yet if a person chooses 'the other side', suddenly all their games are rubbish, and their console has no redeeming features.
Both Sony and MS have made some huge mistakes and had huge successes this generation, I don't see why people ignore the bad and twist everything for the good.
There's very little debate on N4G, only ...
Well, there's already been rumours that Rare has had a couple of 360 projects moved to development for Next Xbox launch.
If that's the case then it seems to me that history is getting close to repeating itself.
Sure, the 360 is going to be around longer than the Xbox1 - but am I going to be playing amazing 360 titles on the Next Xbox after 8-10 years? I doubt it.
Plus FirstK1ght - you are speculating on profit info - I'm giving my opinion. We have...
My single biggest concern is that MS do the same to the 360 as they did to the original Xbox.
I felt the Xbox was killed off far to quickly - I know MS had their reasons (high costs of the original Xbox, and a need to launch early to grab marketshare). If the 360 doesn't get a decent run then I won't buy the next Xbox under any circumstances.
'Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me' As the saying goes!
I doubt the 360 will get to 1...
An alternative spin on this could be that despite Halo 3 being so old, there's been nothing to take it's place. 360 owners are only buying it because they have no other options for exclusive FPS games.
I'm done with the Halo franchise. Halo 1 was great, Halo 2 was awful and Halo 3 was average at best - I doubt I'll be buying any more Halo themed games. I know multiplayer is a personal opinion, but I prefer CoD4 for online. The only thing Halo 3 did, which all other multiplay...
Could we get an official Microsoft response from TheMart, Zhuk or PoG please?
I never know quite what to believe when it comes to the 360 until I hear 'the truth' from one of those guys.
:)
Each to their own I guess. I though ME was fairly average. Fantastic story, but far to many things wrong with the game mechanics and game play.
If BioWare can address the issues for ME2, then I'll buy it, and I don't care what platform(s) it's on.
It would interesting to see how well an Uncharted game would sell if they removed Nathan Drake and put in Lara Croft.
For me Tomb Raider is bigger as a franchise, but Uncharted is much much better as a game. I just wonder how it would be received if they did a mash-up of the two...
The original Uncharted had that Tomb Raider / Indiana Jones feel, but also created a unique 'everyman' character in Nathan Drake.
I actually really liked Tomb Raider Le...
Fantastic news... just wish I had a gaming PC capable of playing it :(
I think you are just nitpicking here thor.
The engine GG have created is propriety to the the PS3 - so you are right in saying that in it's current form, KZ2 could not be done on the 360.
However, don't Rare also make their own engine?... So would you also say that Banjo Nuts and Bolts couldn't possibly be done on the PS3 because of the proprietry engine???
Yeah, I agree.
I own both consoles, and think the PS3 has the edge, but there's nothing about KZ2 that would make me say categorically that it could NEVER be done on a 360 (I might change my mind once actually play it though. :) )
Obviously the devs can give more insight in to how much processing power the graphics plus physics plus audio plus AI require.
But, as you stated Foxgod, it's always going to be an apples to pears comparison - plus it's ...
The only reason a game fails to live up to hype is if people get swept up in it.
KZ2 has become a monster. I hope it delivers, but as I've said many time son this site. GG are not a proven developer, so I am cautiously optimistic about this game - nothing more.
If KZ2 turns out to play as good as it looks, then my gaming experience will be all the sweeter because my expectations have not been influenced by the hype.
However, outside the walls of arena ...
EA have put themselves in a tough spot.
Price, delays and timed exclusivity are hurting sales of the game.
In Europe the PS3 version of RockBand was released not to long before the US got Rock Band 2. And we had to pay an extortionate amount for it.
I didn't bother buying the full 'Band in a Box' version of Rock Band, as I heard there were improvements to the peripherals in RB2 - so will hold off until that version finally launches.
I do ow...
The 10+ year plan works on so many levels.
Three off the top of my head....
1. Increases profit
Manufacturing costs drop over time. $199 may be the sweet spot for sales, but $199 and making a loss is not good. Having a 10 year plan allows prices to be dropped in a much more sensible and strategic way to maximise profit, and retain a perceived value to the customer. For example, releasing at 500 then dropping to 200 in short time psan makes the customer ...
