Pah!
Since when did games get reviewed based on their suitability to be bought second hand!?
EDIT: And when are these sites gonna grow some balls. If they have such high principles then retract the review. Don't whine about almost retracting a review!!
"360 exclusive line up for 2010 is looking _as better as_ PS3"
<sigh> Grammar FTW!
He could have said GoW3 was the 'definitive' hack n slash!! :)
Ah, don't say that Pete - you were great in the 80's and 90's!!
The problem here foxgod is that just upping the number of discs is not always the answer.
Some games need large environments streamed from one source. Rage has had to be cut back because of the 360's DVD limitation.
I don't care about disc swapping in games which are linear, or have natural break points. But it stands to reason that some developers are having to scale back their ambition because space is now an issue. DVD is holding back some developers and therefo...
In all seriousness, yeah, I think it's a variable.
MS seem to be going for the 'good enough' approach to graphics, whereas Sony is going for the showcase graphics.
I'm sure MS could have bankrolled Bungie to ensure 720p was the minimum, and I'm sure they could have lined SquareEnix's pockets with a bit more cash to delay the PS3/360 launch to ensure 720p was hit on their version of FFXIII.
But what would have been the point... As it stands the vast major...
Absolutely agree.
Seems these sort of setup's work better in a creative environment, where you have people passionate about what they do and also for smaller numbers of employees. There does come a point where a company gets so many employees that this structure doesn't work - no matter how enthusiastic or passionate the workforce
One of the biggest issuesin the 'regular' corporate world is Ego. So many people are more interested in their pay bracket and job title ...
Yeah, cus lack of HD really hurt Halo 3 sales!!
...They're being played on my PS3!! :)
Which is more than can be said for my 360...
Maybe if he had said that Sony have 'the definitive' line up of 1st party studios I'd be more inclined to bash him for the comments. :)
He makes some fair points about the games industry. He's not taking shots at MS - purely talking about how Sony do things differently. And unlike Greenburg, Turn 10 and co he seems to be backing up his comments with facts/research!
In many businesses there are advantages / disavantages of developing internally vs externally. It can be a double edged sword.
Having lots od 1st parties means that it costs more to Sony. Sony are not exactly rolling in money right now. Also, if a 1st party stop performing (see Rare and MS / Nintendo) it becomes tricky. Bank rolling projects with 3rd parties can be harder, as money may be sunk in to a 1st party - even if that 1st party is not developing anything. But they al...
So is it Ok to start with the '360 has no games' line now? /jk
I think it's admirable that Remedy had high ambitions for Alan Wake as a sandbox game.
I'm not sure exactly how it would have worked - but considering the number of times I've heard 'sandbox' mentioned - it definitely seems like they had to scale back that ambition because of the limitations of the platform rather than a need to focus of the game play / story by making it linear.
I'd like to see the best of both worlds! Some Grand Prix / proper circuits / linear type of events, AND the sandbox city.
I'd also love to be able to tweak settings so that I could dial the game back to the older versions - before Traffic Checking etc were introduced and the game was far less forgiving! :)
And a proper Crash Mode.
I think the comparison comes from them both being 'serious' games, with fairly mature themes/stories. And both seem big on atmosphere.
But from a game play point of view they are really quite different.
I love arcade style racing games, and this looks potentially awesome.
Also looking forward to Blur, but hope it's better than PGR4.
It's going to take a brave and bold publisher to bankroll the types of games Jaffe is talking about.
It would be nice to think that one day games can stand up to some works of literature or film.
Right now I think the industry is still too imature for the serious heavy hitting games (Heavy Rain looks the closest, but there's still some way to go).
@Crab
I think you're wrong Crab. Unless you can provide some links where MS/Take-Two actually state it was a loan you've got nothing here.
I think you might be misreading this quote from the Bitbag article "Apparently, Microsoft got this $50 million dollars back, plus another $20 million in profit." That was referring to MS' expectations of profit, as is nothing but speculation on the part of the Bitbag author.
"Deferred [revenue]" i...
"The $50million Microsoft paid for that GTA DLC is probably in a similar ball-park to what would be spent on a mid-large PSN release"
EPIC claimed the original Gears of War cost in the region of 10million. I know I'd rather have 5 new IP's rather than some crappy DLC.
I'm glad Sony don't follow the MS model of buying exclusives, DLC and timed-exclusivity.

I'm pretty sure Natal will outsell Arc. Not cus it'll necessarily be better - it's just obvious that Natal is a bigger part of MS' strategy.
Arc appears to be another complimentary technology to the Sony brand. Natal appears integral to the 360's future. It wouldn't surprise me if we see every 360 bundled with Natal after release; I suspect we'll only see a few Arc bundles.
