Mobile (phone / tablet) gaming is coming of age - maybe it's not quite there, but it is close, and the way is being lead by iOS games.
I'm really looking forward to Republique. Worth checking out on Kickstarter (and contributing :) )
Also, Infinity Blade Dungeons looks very promising
I've also enjoyed the ports of stuff like The Bards Tale and Chrono Trigger; and new titles such as Ghost Trick. There are a couple of decent exclu...
Interesting point that basically DRM is implemented so that publishers / developers buy enough time to recoup their money - but ultimately they know the game will be cracked.
I wonder how accurate that statement is, as so many AAA games are cracked before they have even hit the shelves. Seems like the publishers need to tighten up the controls in the supply chain as well.
There's no easy answer to DRM, but StarForce are definitely one of the company'...
Yeah, I agree. I always thought that ModNation felt like it should be a LBP game - especially coming from the Play, Create, Share initiative.
I hope this game turns out to be more than ModNation 2 with a LBP skin, and that it plays better than the original - I really didn't like ModNation for some reason.
Valve may be open in terms of mods, SDK's and so on, but Steam is as closed and controlled as the iTunes and App Stores.
The ultimate closed system is a console - and yet Valve has worked with Sony to incorporate Steam. If they can do it with Sony they could do it with Apple.
Not that I think an Apple / Valve console will become a reality - but the parallels between Steam and iTunes Store might mean a closer alignment, as Steam is already on OSX.
Apple are already moving in to the games industry - they're just doing it under the radar.
iPod Touch has sold millions. iPads have sold millions. If there were more games for OSX it would certainly gain popularity among people who don't want the faff of upgrading a PC.
If Valve integrated Steam with the iTunes Store it would definitely be a nice service.
With Infinity Blade Dungeons and Republique and a few other games coming, I th...
I would have thought the mediocre review scores and the fact the game was generic and unoriginal would have done more damage.
Excuses, excuses Starbreeze... The best move they could make is getting the hell away from EA and get back to making interesting games.
This list needs to include the Virtual Boy. A completely un-portable portable gaming device that induced headaches, had almost zero third party support, and only a handful of games
I agree with your second point but not the first.
In the first example, why should the person buying used trade that game towards new? From my experience people who buy used tend to stick to used games and therefore never put any money back in to the development industry.
Your second point is valid, but generally I find some used prices are not far below budget price - so if there's only a 1-2quid difference, I'll buy the new version.
When the 60GB BC PS3 was discontinued I bought 2. (One for me and one for a gift). I thought BC was a critical feature.
But honestly. I rarely used it, and could have easily lived without it by just dragging out the PS2 when I wanted to play an old game.
If leaving out BC results in a cheaper launch price I hope MS and Sony don't bother
While fanboys rage and think that MS and Sony hate each other, they forget that both company's work in the same industry and have vested interests.
If one company wanted to get ahead the easiest way would be to massively undercut the other on hardware and games... And yet in general hardware prices mirror each other, and RRP on games is identical (talking about MS and Sony here, not Ninty).
Either Sony or MS could have 'won the war' a long time ag...
The problem here isn't whether used games should / shouldn't be playable on next gen hardware - it's that the entire business model for gaming is wrong as it stands.
The only reason stores like to sell used games is because they make a huge profit compared to selling new games. This means the publishers are screwing the stores; and the hardware manufacturers are screwing the publishers with licensing fees (hence why PC games are cheaper than console games).
Will be interesting to see. CCP games has been diversifying and expanding a lot over the last few years.
I played EVE Online for a while, and although ultimately it wasn't for me, the core concepts of the game were unlike anything else on the market. I hope that sort of creativity comes through in DUST.
Ah GAME, you rotted dinosaur carcass.
If only you'd have moved with the times, and not stockpiled thousands of POS second hand games that were never going to sell. If only your online prices had been even closely comparable to your competitors. If only you had started selling used games online about 3 years earlier. If only the management had been more radical in their thinking before Supermarkets came and blew you out of the water.
You'd still pro...
I thought a lot of the tech from Milo became Kinectimals?
Yeah, that'd be interesting.
Whatever platform he ends up delivering on, someone needs to give him a truckload of money, and give him a few years to really develop a game that meets his 'vision'.
I'm really happy about this.
I don't think Peter was every a 'corporate suit' so found it odd he was promoted to that sort of position in Microsoft.
I think Microsoft's reliance on hitting deadlines stifled Peter's creativity, so I really hope he goes on to join or form an independent dev, that is either PC focused or multiplat. And he gets his hands properly dirty in the development process again.
Just to start an in...
And iPad
Although if rumours are true the Apple TV was originally supposed to be iTV, but changed because of trademark issues. So maybe this will a tougher trademark for Apple to ignore.
Yeah, it uses Kinect and I believe you have to do the actions from the mini games, and stupid gestures to townsfolk...
Can't wait to level up my Wood Chopping and Sword Making skills for a few pointless hours!
It is a good thing, and I'll always cut Peter a little slack because Populous is still one of my favourite games... But with each game launched I'm cutting less and less slack.
The problem I have with Lionhead / Peter is that even if you strip away the hype the Fable games have been fun but average at best.
Yes!
Plus, Simon the Sorcerer and anything by Sierra.. pretty much ANY point and click game!
I'd also like to see Disgaea on iPad. That would make my day!
