No, you're wrong, mate. PS2 was inerior to Xbox in every way (and yet was more successful).

PS2 CPU is running at ~300MHz; XBOX CPU is running at 733MHz.

PS2 has 24MB of RAM; XBOX has 64MB of RAM.

PS2 has 4MB frame-buffer (video) memory (+GPU was far inferior then XBOX, and even the Dreamcast GPU); XBOX GPU was a modified geforce 3 GPU (with programable pixel/vertex shaders).

PS2 doesn't have a HDD; XBOX has 8GB HDD.

You're right - I'm not that good, but I have some programming knowledge ;)
Those little SPU's does not have cache memory and branch predictors, and have different instruction set then PPU. PPU acts more like a controller (for SPUs), than real CPU. So Cell is not an easy-to-develop platform, but it's indeed powerful thing. But to say it can blow away Xenon is ridiculaos.

You are absolutely right - DEVELOPERS should care about it, not consumers.

And if PS3 is really 20% more powerful than X360, do you really think that majority of gamers will be able do tell the difference between the same game running on the X360 and PS3? Maybe, in the future, games on PS3 will look better, but I don't believe they'll look SIGNIFICALY better. Just like in last-gen wars: Dead Or Alive 2 on the PS2 was slightly better looking in terms of lighting FX, but Dreamca...

And with this post, you just showed that you know very little (if anything) about hardware, and yet you are so fast in concluding/blindly believing in everything developers say. I said it before, and I'm saying it again - Cell is more powerful than Xenon, but not THAT powerful as Sony would like you to believe. 95% of things devs do on Cell can be done on Xenon (if programed correctly). Xenon IS very powerful too - for Christ's sake, it's a Tripple-core, dual threaded CPU where each core is r...

OK, we all agreed (one way or another) that Cell is superior to Xenon. Why the hell PS3 fans keep coming back to that subject? I think because PS3 hasn't give any reason (so far) to justify it's high price. There's just promises, analyses, "Cell's power is limitless, we need it..."...

Now, point me one game that could put XBOX 360 games to shame in terms of graphics, story, controls, whatever... Don't say "just you wait 'till november, or 2008.", but show me...

It's purely a matter of personal preference. I don't like Gears of War, nor Lair, or Warhawk... I like, for example, Monkey Island series of P&C adventure games. That's something I can't get on a console.

I've lost interest in playing new games, and getting more of the same. Right now I'm playing games from the beginning of the 90's, to 2003. Anything after that failed to impress me (or maybe I've just grew up ;))

Nothing beats old classics like Deus Ex, Syst...

Wow physics and graphics are so good! That's what the games are about! LOL!

I'm amazed how easily you can sell "shallow" games in nice packaging. I think Lair would be just what Doom 3 was - technology demonstration. Average game with nice graphics and hilariously hyped-up by developers mambo-jambo which 95% of people on this site don't understand.

Can someone here, who claims that procedural water and volumetric clouds cannot be done on X360, tell me w...

Exactly, Zonetrooper5!

Anyway, here's a great article about "all-powerfull" PS3 and XBOX 360 written two years ago. It's from Anandtech.

Multi features appeal to every one, wether they admit it or not. People want to play more than just games. Otherwise, we would all have just a Wii remote. Instead of a TV/DVD/CD/Foxtel remote/s. It's Nintendo that has always appealed to a small niche. That's why N64 and Gamecube failed, they didn't see the big picture. And the Wii will follow their lead. The Wii has cut too many corners.

If what you are saying is true, then why the PSX was a miserable failure no one wanted to ...

You are wrong, mate. If anyone recycles old games, than it's Micro$oft and Sony. Examples: Tekken 1,2,3, Tag,4,5,6. God dammit! Same ol' stupid one-on-one fighting game. Nothing really changed since the original (Tekken 1)(you're still sitting infornt of your TV pressing the buttons on a joypad). Virtua Fighter 1,2,3,4,5. FIFA 96,97,98,99, 2000, 01, 02 ,03...07. WTF! And still you're sitting infront of your TV... NBA 96-2007! Ace Combat 1,2,3,4. Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 + (3D era) 4,Deddly allianc...

Yes, I said they would have to cut some corners, but I also said that there probably would not be any noticable difference. Following your logic, none of the games on the X360 can be done on PS3 (just look at all the ports - 90% looks the same or better on X360, meaning devs had to "cut some corners" when porting to PS3).

As for "there's nothing great to talk about considering X360", my answer is that XBOX 360 is 1,5 years old, and probably everything has be...

I'm REALLY sick of all those devs hyping up systems (either XBOX 360 or PS3, but predominantely PS3, because Sony pays A LOT of money to the dev-teams to praise the PS3). Lair does NOT look any better than any other game of with good graphics (Gears Of War, Unreal Tournament 2007...) and yet devs are talking sooo much about how they are "blown away by PS3 and Cell", or "this can't be done on the XBOX 360". If they are "so blown away", why the hell there aren't an...

There's a really good chance that Sony will end up like Sega - software developer only, and all because of Micro$oft's agressive strategy. It's been said that PS3's life-span is 7-10 years (according to Sony's predictions). In about 5 years from now, M$ will make a new XBOX (Xbox 720 if you wish...). That's exactly what Sony doesn't need, because of the money they spent developing the/for PS3. In other words, it would probably take Sony at least 2 years (extra) to develop a system which can c...

"BTW, although PS3 didn't launch until Nov 06, the 360 had to compete with it all year because of all of Sony's claims that generated expectations and speculation that the PS3 would be so much greater than what was already available(360), in some aspects its harder to fight a "myth" than it is a tangible product so I wouldn't call that NO competition."

I agree with you. That's EXACTLY what happened last time when Dreamcast had to fight the "PS2 myth&quo...

Once again - who cares! I honestly don't understand why graphics are OH SOOOOO MUCH important to some people??? For example, System Shock 2 has faaar more inferior graphics to any current fps on PS3 or X360, but can blow away both RESISTANCE or HALO 3 in terms of gameplay inovation and atmosphere. Not to mention Deus Ex, one of the greatest games of all time.

All we get is more of the same (same game with higher res, with ZERO inovation).

just my opinion...

I don't think that Sony can win this one. Competition is strong this time (not like when PS1 competed with Sega Saturn, which was total failure, and when PS2 competed with financially exhausted Sega and Dreamcast). The only thing that can save PS3 is BluRay format, but only if BluRay dominates. And I mean DOMINATES - completely kill HD DVD which is unlikely to happen (at least for a few years or so...).

Actually, Xenos (XBOX 360 GPU) is slightly more powerful than RSX. Xenos has unified shader architecture which is more efficiant than RSX "classic" architecture (divided pixel/vertex shader units). Theoretical max of RSX is 68 billion shader ops/s, but that's unlikely to be achived in todays or future games (68 bil. is achived in ideal situation).

RSX is, in terms of power, somewhere between geforce 7800 and 7900GT. Xenos is practically Radeon X1900XT (it has fillrat...
