I'd generally like to put forward some ingenious and fun indie game, but God of War really deserves the spot, in my opinion.
There have been many great games coming out this year, but like the last few years most of the best games are either re-releases or remakes of already successful games on different hardware. I'm not sure these deserve to compete for the game of the year, in my eyes. There have also been some quirky and memorable new games on PC, but none of th...
This is going to be unpopular, but when Telltale went down I was just thinking: "Finally!" You can't run a gaming company that way, mindlessly expanding, cranking out stuff and looking for a big pay day. That's how startup companies roll: high risk, high reward. The Telltale Tool was stagnating and they were in dire need to reinvent themselves.
That aside, I'm looking forward to the Crash Team Racing remake and Kingdom Hearts 3. Both long awaited. Stil...
I'll have to agree with ziggurcat: John "TotalBiscuit" Bain passing away happened so suddenly. I've been following him in all his ventures since the early Warcraft Radio/WoW Radio days, so I feel like I knew the guy almost as a friend. We knew he had been living healthier and fighting cancer. It seemed like he was getting better, and then all of a sudden it happened. And I don't know how long it had been known, but I just recently found out his widow and legacy, Genna Ba...
I think Sony's Japan Studio has done an amazing job with "Astro Bot Rescue Mission". Finally a game that you can say is validating the VR experience. They also had a hand in "No Heroes Allowed" last year, which is my second most played VR game. There's a good reason why most people think Sony's PSVR is a great way to get into VR. It is cheap, has great games, and can even be connected to the PC if you want. Sometimes "good enough" is good enough. As l...
Herman Sanchez as Jarek in Mortal Kombat 4...
Lots of good choices for this question as well, but I'll go with Ragnar Tørnquist. He designed the moody, modern adventure "The Longest Journey", and has pushed for technological innovation in the point and click-genre. He's also behind "Dreamfall", a series of sequels to the previously mentioned game.
The MMORPGs "Anarchy Online" and "The Secret World" may also ring a bell in some people's ears. While not having take...
A very hard question to give a definite answer to... Thinking we should pick a character with a story, perhaps someone like Squall from Final Fantasy VIII is the worst. Or rather, the emo protagonist. I'm sure there are others like him. That said, there are tons of bad characters to go around in video games.
Metroidvania is a big contender for me. A neat little package with great gameplay, lots of secrets to discover and entertaining bossfights.
I tend to not like one single genre though. I generally like genre oddballs with interesting gameplay, like some of my favourite games:
- Ghost Trick entrancing me with an amazing, but quirky puzzle mystery.
- Ace Attorney putting an active mystery spin on the visual novel genre, making me pay attention to all the deta...
Day 0 patches.
A game that was available to pre-order along with a bunch of useless stuff for your dust-ridden shelf, possibly full of bugs deriving from messy and rushed code, or missing essential parts of the game at launch, not living up to expectations or being less than promised, having terrible controls or other technical "oversights", etc. You got the physical version for posterity, but you have to download half the game through a Day 0 patch.
The video is 1 year old...
Or get it together with Day of the Tentacle Remastered (hidden within the game) for 3.74 today...
No Shelly de Killer? Well, it's hard enough making a top list of characters for this game, so I wouldn't hold it against him.
Valve provides keys to their partners/developers/publishers for free, so that they can sell them on other sites than Steam's own store.
Some partners abuse this system by requesting a bunch of keys for bad games that barely sell copies and have negative reviews, and using these keys on "fake" accounts to earn free trading cards. Valve does not like this abuse of their system and is trying to figure out how they can better combat this, putting trading restricti...
Possibly going to be a bad production. Here's a review of the first soundtrack on vinyl:

I'm glad I had my content blocker active for this volatile article.
Congratulations on reaching your Kickstarter goal! I hope this boosts your game towards the potential that you're aiming to reach.
The mechanics sound interesting. I love roguelikes and stealth, but it looks like this kind of stealth is more akin to the Elder Scrolls type (bit simplistic) than Deus Ex (more convoluted). That would be a limitation of the type of game you're making though, since making it convoluted would require thorough level design. Perhaps I'm j...
Well, I'll likely be checking it out when it's complete. I'm just a bit more critical than last time, and I might not be one of the earliest adopters this time around. If it lives up to its expectations, that would be great for all parts!
I agree with the Kickstarter vs. Early Access sentiment. I think Early Access aimed to be an alpha/beta access for games with enough bugs to not be on the release list just yet, but still fairly complete. The lack of quality control has tarnished its reputation.
Kickstarter has somehow maintained good reputation despite some of its failures, but the blame is more easily shifted over on the consumer and the companies making promises, rather than a defunct system. Lots of great...
I preordered and played Contrast because it looked awesome from its trailer. I did, however, think that it fell a bit short as far as its gameplay potential. It had such a great idea, but used it too little and made a big, empty world without a whole lot to do in between the good parts.
Sadly, I get the same vibe from We Happy Few. Awesome trailer that makes the game look really interesting, but I'm sceptical due to my previous endeavours.
I guess this is what happens when you give them a 15 year head start with a decent "streaming" alternative. No wonder Steam dominates the market. People don't want to install and log into 20 different gaming accounts. Only the biggest and best companies can compete.
I don't want to defend Steam's high sales cut, and I'm quite fond of Epic Games, but I don't like companies hogging exclusives to drive consumers to their own store. They should mak...
