I agree, but that's generally true for any significant difference in any consoles architechture. That's one of the main reasons, why exclusive games often end up setting the bar in terms of technological achievements. Multiplats will need to run on the lowest common denominator which in case of the SSD will be the PC for a while.
It's arguable whether it was worth it to go with the Cell for the PS3 for example. While it unlocked a lot of potential for exclusive ...
It's official: https://blog.playstation.co...
If they don't show how it looks it'll leak in the upcoming weeks anyway with mass production starting up. I think they'll show it. Since Sony seemingly wants to emphasize games being played on real hardware it would be a good way to stress that point by having the console on stage.
It's official. Glad we didn't have to wait too long for the new date. Can't wait to see some next-gen gameplay.
Edit: Should this be considered a duplicate? The other story was on the ads. This is an official confirmation blogpost by Sony. I don't mind this failing if the other story gets updated with the official confirmation and a link to the official Playstation blogpost. I think it's probably better to present the official info instead of a 3rd party...
I'll wait for the blog post to confirm before getting excited again. At this point it's possible that they internally postponed it again and twitch didn't get the memo in time. If it's true a blog post should confirm it in a couple minutes anyway.
We're overdue to see some next gen gameplay demos. It's getting tiresome seeing the same arguments over paper specs. I can't wait for the discussion to shift towards games once the ice breaks and we start seeing what these consoles can really deliver. I hope that they announce the new date for the PS5 event next week. Best case would be an announcement tomorrow with the event being Thursday or Friday.
@extermin8or: The main purpose of my comment is to counteract the spread of misinformation. Unfortunately some people are out to discourage people from asking questions. I'm all for open discussion and the risk of sounding ignorant shouldn't stand in the way of asking questions. I'd happily try and explain some of those things in layman's terms if anyone has questions.
It's not like I'm not benefiting from these exchanges myself. I can use it as an o...
@Tekolie: Ok this is good. I was right to point out that you missed my point then.
I have to start with point number 4 or everything else won't make sense:
Not only do I understand the profit-motive behind these decisions. Me trying to convey that as a main contributing factor was the entire point of my initial comment.
A whataboutism is a logical fallacy used to discredit a position without addressing it's content. I never discredited th...
@Tekolie: Let's take a couple steps back.
What do you think am I saying?
What 'whataboutisms' am I engaging in?
What point of my original comment have you addressed?
What do I not understand about capitalism in your opinion?
@rainslacker: Agreed. It's just inherently more difficult to explain more advanced concepts compared to playing the numbers game. Marketing departments love numbers, because they are very effective in communicating that something is better even when the reality is more complicated than that.
What does outdoing PC even mean? On what metric? Or what does 'PC' even mean for that matter? Since you are criticising people for not understanding hardware, why don't you actually try to educate them instead of attacking them for being excited about new tech? And what is your level of expertise if you are presenting your point of view so confidently.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't consider myself a hardware expert, but I'm a programmer with some en...
@Tekolie: You've completely missed my point. I'm responding mainly to the people that don't acknowledge that an economic self-interest is part of the equation. Your whole comment is build on that premise. We don't really have anything to discuss then.
Framerates are not always GPU bound. If the framerate is CPU bound the PS5 should have a slight advantage in most cases, because it should have a lower CPU overhead due to offloading more workloads to custom ASICs.
Even if the framerate is GPU bound it's not always limited by the compute performance of the GPU. The higher clockspeed of the PS5 could benefit other steps of the GPU pipeline.
And lastly even if the framerate is bottlenecked purely by com...
Numbers matter, but it's important to understand what they mean. Sony have decided on a bold approach, because they've gone for maximum efficiency by eliminating a lot of bottlenecks that would typically hamper the real world performance of the console. Unfortunately most of those customizations are hard to market, because they aren't simply communicated by having a bigger number than the data sheet.
To me this is by far the most exciting piece of hardware since...
@Caddytrek: As far as I can tell Foxtrot is just calling out the inconsistency of these corporations. I get where he's coming from. It's not to say that there is anything negative about the donations or words of tribute to the current cause, but if you've seen some of the shit that's going on in the world on a daily basis, without any of these corporations ever shining a light on it, I think we are allowed to ask the question why they only ever care in situations where they ha...
@Ilostmymind: That only means that the PS4 version will work on PS5. There is always the possibility for a proper PS5 port with higher quality assets. I've heard and seen a lot of people say that they'll wait for the PS5 version of those games (Mainly TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077).
I think the review embargo for The Last of Us 2 lifts on June 12. I'd think they wanna have at least 1 full day of media coverage focused on that unless they are unsure about the game's quality (which I highly doubt).
Edit: Of course they don't have to navigate around that as they can simply move the review embargo a couple days back if they wanted to.
I think they wanna go ahead of TLOU2 to clear up any confusion about a potential PS5 version. Some people might hold of from buying TLOU2 and Ghost of Tsushima if they think they'll have to rebuy it to get the best version on PS5.
If Sony has some sort of cross-buy program or the PS4 version will automatically upgrade as soon as a PS5 enhanced version is available, they should share it before the release of those games. Of course they could announce their plans separat...
Then Sean Reinert died shortly after. We've lost 2 of the greatest drummers of all time in a matter of 2 weeks. Then the corona pandemic put this year on hold for many of us. It has certainly been a turbulent year so far.
The media continues to push for polarization by eliminating nuanced viewpoints from the discussion. What's often left are two oversimplified positions that are reduced to their ideological essence for easy digestibility. The algorithms ensure that ...
That just means that it'll be easy for developers to use the full potential of the PS5 I/O without having to do low level optimization, because the architecture works on a system level and doesn't need any specific implementation on the software level except for supporting the new API.
That doesn't change the fact that a game that is build from the ground up to use these kind of speeds can't be easily ported to the PC or even Xbox Series X without significan...
