All the craziness that can potentially happen in Uncharted has to be preloaded into memory. Swapping out datachunks when reading from an HDD takes a lot of time which is why a lot of data is kept in RAM just in case it might be needed. As long as the game is linear and the player-actions are predictable (like in Uncharted) it is possible to do some amazing, albeit scripted setpieces. If the system needs time to swap a large portion of the data in memory, with data on the HDD, the player can b...

Do not be sorry. Be better.

That would require more than 10 million sales to break even. That would be incredibly risky and might backfire really hard if it ends up being anything but a masterpiece. And even then profit would not be guaranteed. I also don't even know why a video game would ever be that expensive. Most of the costs are manhours and licenses and marketing.

Considering the game has a ~5 year dev cycle such a budget simply doesn't make sense unless they cast every hollywood actor...

A:"The people who are being offended. There is not one group of people that decides what is offensive."

Ok here are two more questions for you:

1. What characteristics determine a 'group' of people?
2. How big must the percentage of offended people within this group be for it to warrant ...

Top 5 games for me:
5. Miles Morales
4. Resident Evil Village
3. Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart
2. Demon's Souls
1. Horizon Forbidden West

There were a lot more I'll probably get like Returnal and Kena and some intriguing games I need to see more of like Pragmata and Project Athia. One game that I was a little disappointed by was Ghostwire Tokyo. I thought it would be less action and more horror, but who knows maybe it...

Could you specify what part of my comment you're responding to? I never said a game running at 4k can't look phenomenal. Keep in mind that Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart has twice the time to render a frame compared to a game running at 60fps.

Seems like it's new so your screensaver might have the old texture: https://twitter.com/PS5only...

Hmm... KFC is hen-tering the console business? Seems like their winging it with the console-design. I do like the sophisticated heating solution though.

In terms of GPU load there is always gonna be a tradeoff between visual complexity of the rendered scene, render resolution, framerate and post processing effects. So the question is what do you prioritize. We've seen most of those aspects improve over time, but unlike resolution which is pushed way into diminishing returns with 4k, we're still seeing a lot of games running at 30fps, which is pretty much the bare minimum framerate you need for a game to be considered playable by most ...

60 fps is great news. Native 4k is gonna be a huge waste of resources this gen though. The game obviously isn't pushing the envelope in terms of visual fidelity, not that it necessarily needs to do that. Obviously the results will vary on a game to game basis, depending on the engine used, but I think this gives us a good ballpark estimation of what we can expect visually from a 4k/60fps title early on.

Just wanted to add some context to the Quake part: Quake 2 is completely path-traced here meaning there is no rasterization going on besides the UI. This is obviously not representative of what the performance impact will be with a modern game that uses ray tracing in a much more limited way.

Using a BVH acceleration structure still takes it's toll on performance and is fairly memory intensive, but we don't fully know how much it impacts performance on the RDNA 2 ar...

For me it certainly did. Ratchet & Clank was a perfect demontration of how the I/O bandwidth of the PS5 allows for game design that wasn't possible on current gen consoles and Horizon Forbidden West just completely blew my mind at the end of the show. Horizon Forbidden West is now easily my most anticipated game and I can't wait to see a gameplay demo of it. From the screenshots I've seen Demon's Souls also looks really impressive. We're already seeing way richer and d...

@Michael1989: I'm talking about a port to next-gen consoles. The nine year dev time wouldn't really be relevant if a current gen port would be realistic. My comment was just about the technical aspect of it not necessarily whether it's practical or not to port it.

I highly doubt they'll even consider a console port, considering the game was entirely funded by PC gamers. The potential backlash could be enourmous if they announced a console port.

But seriously: It's been 9 years. They've taken long enough for a console port to be technically feasible even though Roberts said he didn't want to scale down his vision for a console port. Now it's gotten to the point that he wouldn't even have to compromise it anymore and soon other game-devs could use more efficien...

@crazyCoconuts: That's a great point. You might be right. I still have to go with the disc version simply because my download bandwidth is atrocious.

Even after you've seen the name of the game and the release window? I thought it was pretty clear that this must be a standalone add-on similar to Infamous: First Light. Insomniac is a big and efficient dev team, but 2 years for a full blown next gen sequel is simply not realistic.

2190d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

Insomniac seem to be aiming for transitions that take less than 2 seconds. I've taken a look at the duration of each transition from the demo and the longest one took 63 frames or 2.1 seconds. The shortest one took 43 frames or 1.4 seconds and the average is 52 frames or 1.75 seconds. That's extremely impressive.

By the way you obviously need some transition when loading into a completely different world or you'd simply see the assets disappearing and others pop...

@DJStotty: That's on you for seeing a community that's as big as the playstation community, as some sort of monolithic entity which has a set opinion on every topic. Some people don't care about old games, some do. I've been very outspoken about wanting full bc and and I know a lot of people that have said similar things.
