It's definitely early days. I think the ray tracing capabilities of the RTX 20 cards and the next gen consoles will age really poorly. If ray tracing hardware evolves fast enough we might even see mid-gen refreshes of the consoles for that reason.
Chiplets based MCMs would be really exciting to see in the GPU market. Monolithic dies are pretty much as big as they can reasonably get. If AMD are the first to use chiplets for consumer GPUs it might give them the scalability edge they need to get the performance crown in the high end sector.
@Bismarn: You don't get to define what 'the whole point of video games' is. If escapism is what you want out of them, I have great news for you: There is a wide range of video games that can provide that. And if avoidance of anger and other negative emotions is what you're after, maybe you should stop paying attention to games that are clearly not for you.
I probably will. New consoles are always exciting and I wanna be there from the beginning, but it would certainly help to have some release dates on games to be able to envision a roadmap.
Death Stranding was my most anticipated game of this generation. A lot of people advised me to temper my expectations. I didn't. I went into it expecting a masterpiece. It ended up being one of my favorite games of this generation. If anything it only reinforced my stance to trust my own assessment over anyone else's opinions.
Is it divisive? Yes. That's to be expected when it doesn't follow an established formula. I applaud Kojima for being creative and ref...
For Cyberpunk I agree. Ghost of Tsushima is day 1 for me though. I'm way to hyped to wait 4 months to play that game.
This game looks really ambitious. It seems like they've pushed the game design as far as they could while also being tied to current gen systems. Makes me wonder what could've been, if they designed it from the ground up for next gen systems only.
Does anyone even want to play this on 2013 hardware? I can't imagine how it's gonna look/perform on the base consoles. Guess we'll find out soon enough.
We might see some advantages here and there like finer/less visable LOD transitions maybe even higher quality textures for quickly changing scenery. In certain situations it might have a similar effect as if the PS5 had more memory, because devs will be able to get more data on demand from the PS5 which means they might not need to have as much data pre-loaded into RAM.
Anyting that is scalable and doesn't require specific optimisations will probably show the biggest di...
Both consoles can fill the RAM in a matter of seconds so there shouldn't be much of a reason for traditional loading screens. A fade-out/fade-in transition should be enough even for the initial loading. Maybe devs will come up with some interesting animations to transition from the main menu to the loaded savegame. It's also possible that starting at a main menu won't even be that common anymore and instead you get into the game immediately.
I hope you realize that this comment might not age well. In case you haven't noticed there is a new generation of consoles coming up and some of what they've been working on for the last couple of years isn't even unveiled yet. All we know for now is that they've built a very capable console, invested in a stronger 1st party lineup and a compelling ecosystem with backwards compatibility and services like game pass.
Don't get me wrong the fact that these ...
Addendum: Just rewatched the SSD part of the road to the PS5 video. Cerny says that for 3rd party drives the I/O unit has to arbitrate the extra priorities. Was that the part you were referring to locomorales? It shouldn't require extra circuitry to do that though.
The Flash controller is part of the PS5 SSD. Any commercial m.2 drive will have it's own controller so unless they start producing SSDs according to the PS5 required spec there is no way to "deliver control to the PS5 controller".
My point is that you can overcome the disadvantage of the non specialized memory controller on the commercial m.2 drive with higher bandwidth.
Priority levels will be more important for dynamic loading sequences li...
It'll be interesting to see how much more raw bandwidth you'll need to compensate for the missing priority levels in different game situations.
The only variant that would be a considerable upgrade in terms of space is the 1TB version. I wouldn't be surprised if it costs $250, so I don't think it's worth it even if the 980 Pro performs sufficiently.
Selling the Series X at $399 is almost certainly going to mean that they are losing a significant amount of money on every console sold. Cutting the cost on Game pass / XBL Gold would be suicidal in that situation as their revenue would decrease drastically when it would need to increase to make up for the losses. They'd need to take a huge chunk of the market share just to get the revenue back to the point it already is. Why would they prioritize market share so much?

It strikes me as odd that a person who claims that there are so many amazing people at insomniac that don't deserve harm directed towards them, would decide to go through twitter which is the most effective way to direct an angry mob towards the company. She also says, that she was universally loved at the company and has many friends there, yet she claims that there is a 'culture of hiding ugliness' and that she only had one ally at the company who was made misarable for fighting...
This and Curse of the Moon 2 were my highlights of the show. Disappointed that we haven't gotten a Sonic announcement considering today is the 29th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Mega Drive.
The type of loading that is done in R&C can be done on Xbox Series X as well. If you look at the R&C trailer you can see that there is a transition space between the different levels inside the portal. This is basically the same trick as the good old elevator used to hide a loading screen, only that it is now short enough to not feel like much of an interruption. This transition would have to be longer on the Series X, but in principle it should work even if not as fast as on PS5. <...
"Sony and you been hyping up ssd and and half those games look and play like current gen"
What about the other half? Did you think that better hardware automatically makes games like Bugsnax look next-gen?
CPU gap? A 3% higher CPU clock isn't going to result in any real-world benefits for AI in games. Even in a CPU bound scenario you'd be hard pressed to notice any difference between the two consoles CPU capabilities.
I preferred it when we got newer indie titles. With AAA games they are always gonna be older titles. Chances are I either already bought them or have no interest in them. I'll probably try out Erica, but the rest is not really interesting to me. I disliked the Tomb Raider reboot, so I never bothered with the sequels. Maybe I'll like Rise of the Tomb Raider more, but I have so many games in my backlog that I actually wanna play that it's unlikely that I'll ever find the time to...
