I don't know about innovating, but Nintendo should keep running their company as they see fit. It is not for me to second guess them. It is easy to sit on the side lines and throw stones.
But you can use use more than one using a usb hub. I am using 3 on my X1S.
I am using 2-2 TB SShds, and 1 TB SShd on my X1S, for a total of 5TB ext storage. My console has a 2TB internal, which I used for apps vids, pics.
The simple answer is because I have many X1 and X360 games, and they simply don't fit on one SSHD external drive. Using a 4 port USB hub with no issues.
A USB hub should work. I am using a 4 port hub on my X1S. I would assume it would also work on my Pro if I needed.

I was hoping the Switch would be a traditional console with specs in between the X1 PS4 & PRO Scorpio, so they lost me, but I am hoping the Switch does well for Nintendo. It has to do better than the Wiiu, which had all the Nintendo big franchises it still failed, so those saying it is only about the games, well, that may not be 100% true. If memory serves me the Wii also ran out of gas. Many people bought it, but did not play it.
The Wiiu is not $150 and it is in the grave so you are expecting the Switch to drop to that? You are going to be waiting for a long time. I don't see that happening.
If it is all about the games why did the Wiiu fail, because I bought my daughter every Nintendo exclusive for it, before she got bored and wanted a Playstation and Xbox. If it is about the games the Wiiu has all the Nintendo franchises, and it still failed, so it must be about more than just games.
But, what about game updates?

The Switch is clearly a portable that docks. I agree with wickedLester. Nintendo can say what eva they like. What else are they going to say? There is no way the Switch is doing 100 million. The Wii was a genie in the bottle, that aint happening again.

I may be looking at this the wrong way, but to me, the Switch is a portable that docks, not a traditional home console like what Sony and MS are doing, so I thought the Switch could replace the 3DS and Wiiu and be a 2 for 1 console for Nintendo. Am I wrong?
I bought RE7 and love it. No control over anything else so it is what it is. The numbers are what they are, still one hell of a great game.
I love my X1S and looking forward to the Scorpio, but reality tells me Sony has no worries from MS, and they certainly should not be concerned about the portable that docks from Nintendo. This gen is locked for Sony.
To be fair the latter Xb 360 controllers completely fixed the dpad issues. I have one no issues with fighting games. I really don't get why gamers have to tear down other consoles or controllers to justify design of consoles controllers they like.
