Sony should scrap this under powered market divider and focus on releasing a PS5. Keep it slightly more powerful and release just after Xbox Scorpio comes out, just to stay ahead as a number of people only buy the best. There is a lot of life yet in PS4, looking at those E3 trailers; certainly enough to stick around another 1.5 years until a worthy upgrade is available to all. Let the down votes begin. ;-)

Throughout the previously long life of consoles, developers found ways of optimizing and making the most out of the hardware. The PC game counterparts have always had the edge in texture quality and resolution which is fine, that's why PC gamers pay extra more often for high end hardware. However, with NEO that will still be the case and will always be slightly below quality PC performance. That's always been acceptable because the games look and perform good enough for most and the m...

I do see your point so +1. Sega, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are just a few relevant to this; but let's not assume they do not all constantly make bad business decisions, considering their long history of bad business decisions.

Still, I'd love some official news one way or the other; E3 is what mid June?

Agreed, with the rumored specs, it will provide 4K streaming media, UHD bluray and a bunch of 4K indie games. Too bad past 6ft. most people can't discern the difference in resolution either way. 4K is meant for PC gaming.

Sony should really clear this all up in a simple formal announcement. Some people are already saving up, some can't understand why money is even a concern depending on their circumstances and others are planning to sell while second guessing upcoming subscription renewals. Either way, over two months of "rumors" haven't been met with complete optimism which can hurt the brand.

I for one am hoping to see a simple redesigned more efficient slim model or a ...

Yeah because a good percentage of long time Sony supporters will feel pretty ripped off. It's like hearing news of restructuring 10:1 stock after you made a significant investment. I have no doubt that Microsoft sees a negligible upgrade by Sony mid console life as an opportunity to release something WILDY more powerful while Sony is forced to support their blunder not to totally screw everyone who bought it and hurt their once leading brand.

I would totally see your point if the added hardware was only meant for 4K media to push their TV's. However, if this changes performance of games in anyway and divides the market, man...I'm going back to PC and will trade in my Sony junk box for an NX or Xbox 720, Next, etc. A worthy upgrade is ok in my book, a substandard version of a game on a system I not so long ago dropped like $600 on is just a dumb investment I was at one time fully prepared to stand behind before they, ya kno...

Lets not forget there were only 4 years between Xbox 1 and Xbox 360. Then 8 years from Xbox 360 to Xbox One...? Perhaps it would be better to know and commit to purchasing a console for gaming, say every 5 years. That would be ok with me, like time vs value. After year 2, for 3 years we really get some wild looking games.

F Sony for breaking the unique product life cycle and longevity of value consoles provided. It wasn't enough we pay $60 for games, $50 for accessories and $50 a year on subscriptions to play online. Throughout the life of your console, you were paying close to $800 on just hardware and subscription fees, not to mention the games. Now they will tempt developers to use the extra power instead of innovate and learn the hardware and leave the former flagship PS4 model, 40 million of us own, a...

This is not a 4K machine, it lacks the power to push 4K graphics outside of indie games and IS a way for Sony to simply get cash from those who don't feel "shafted". Many of us buy consoles so we don't have to constantly upgrade our PC's. Sure the console versions of games aren't quite as good as my PC, in some ways, but they are certainly good enough. Most importantly, the performance only improves over time on PS4 because developers have time to really figure out t...

That sums up exactly how I view this blunder, well said.

I believe PS4.5k is a monumentally terrible idea and reduces the value of our PS4 investment. Look at how Naughty Dog squeezed every bit of juice from the PS3 last gen to give us "The Last of US" and compare that performance with well, any 1st or 2nd gen PS3 game. Or if you like, Witcher 3 on PS4 which is an impressive feat for the system, even at 30fps 1080p. The point is, we will never see that level of optimization when a more powerful system is available to developers and in my ...

If this is true, we have a solid year before developers start giving us shit ports on core ps4 because developer innovation will take a back seat to the convenience of available power. We will not likely see our consoles performing better through optimization techniques as we did in the past. This is terrible news for console owners who appreciate the longevity of their gaming investment. After this next year of truly optimized PS4 core games are released I'll be selling mine to upgrade t...

Um no... Console war has already been won this gen. 4.5k will be a remake to include 4K blueray player, larger HD, and similarity redesigned "slim" ps3 version. There will be no difference in gaming. No, it won't do 4K gaming, you'd need an SLI rig for that with ultra settings. PC dev's just expect people to throw money at their non optimized games running on all sorts of hardware, what else could be expected. PS4 will evolve into the high setting 1080p machine it was in...

This is all expected of a wealthy company who keeps putting out great games we buy. Would have loved just enough effort into the stereoscopic 3d support which was f'n fantastic LAST gen.

Shareplay was patched and does output at 1080p, with a solid connection it's fantastic. Played many matches of MK in 1080p via shareplay and it's like sitting next to your friend while playing with perfect quality.

The encoder for broadcasting is limited to 720p on twitch/youtube/ustream/dailymo tion but if shareplay can do 1080, I'm sure they will patch remote play in the near future.

Media is not all over this, a few blogs here and there certainly; while the real fuel is just backlash from angry loyal customers and sore trolls. Let's not forget everything anyone has to say thus far is based on rumor and conjecture. If Sony were to do their worst, they will potentially alienate tens of millions of customers. With the exception of peripherals and portables good companies should try to succeed with, even if they failed; Sony has always stood behind it's core market. ...

Sony tries a lot of new things, many of them fail but they are not so stupid to divide their most successful consumer base. They are likely just redesigning the PS4 to be less expensive to make, so they can fit in 4K resolution media support. Think Netflix, Youtube, Bluerays, etc.

PS3 removed hardware based backwards compatibility back in the day and redesigned that system what, 3 times? This is just the latest of rumors and click bait to get people fired up and generate reve...
