That's a potentially huge problem - regardless of changes they make to the game itself. They need to win back the PC crowd if they want to max out their sales, and Molyneux already boasted about their lofty goals there. I'm guessing a straight port (360 <=> PC) won't be enough to do that - unless the game is simply fantastic.
Otherwise I'd bet PC gamers will opt for some other RPG flavors first (Fallout: NV, etc).
If I had to pick one overall category to gripe about, that's it. Most games build your character up to be a total juggernaut. Then you'll fail a mission because of something ridiculous or out of your control
Extreme example => the gnome you were trying to defend against a sea of dragons decided to go rogue & jump into the flaming jaws while you had your back turned, actually trying to protect his worthless @ss.
I'd also add missions that ...
Could be one of the reasons they've shifted.
Valve is a lot like Epic and wants their mod community to thrive.
Sony seems to foster mod support whereas Microsoft drew a firm line. It becomes a no brainer when weighing open vs. closed platform in that context. You'd think that would have to factor in there somewhere.
From distancing themselves from the PS3 as much as possible to making it a priority. Huge change.
But I'm glad Valve is coming along for the ride. They crank out games that I always find myself playing.
Steam sales are one of my vices.
I think I have 100+ games off of Steam now - most of those bought for a fraction of their retail price.
And to think - I was originally hesitant to buy digital. Now it's like crack to me!
I like having a hard copy of games, like with most console games.
But I also love the convenience of having games all in one place, too, all on a massive HDD (ala Steam).
I don't generally trade or sell most games, so for me that isn't a big deal (if I question the quality I'll get or preorder something, then I might go for the hard copy)
My biggest objection to digital distribution is the occasional SLOW download server. I hav...
Remember the cutscene in Resistance:FOM when Hale emptied an entire clip into an Angel to kill the thing?
No reason they couldn't apply that to Hale. He already had the Chimeras' ability to heal incredibly quickly. One bullet may not have been enough...
I hope it wasn't. Kind of hard to completely eliminate the protagonist from the first 2 games without having an engaging character to take his place. I'm not sure Capelli qualifies... I...
The main storyline from ME1 could be conveyed fairly succinctly with redone cutscenes, yada yada yada.
Character development would be the only compromise, but they could account for this like most RPG's (give the player a set number of skillpoints at the start of the game => it's up to you how to use them).
Side note, does anyone know if ME1 could get the Ninja Gaiden Sigma treatment (original game remastered with additional content)? I'm gues...
And yeah, there's always that concern about the sequel being a bit watered down compared to the original, but from what we've seen of DS2 so far it looks great like the first.
Plus, the original DS didn't sell anywhere near as well as it should have (* cough * gooutandbuy3copiesrightnow * cough), so I think there will be that much more effort into making the sequel really stand out.
Fingers crossed. All I know is that DS has me hooked.
"Why the third game will probably fail"
It won't fail. Not from a business sense. Not from a gamer standpoint either.
The Gears franchise is a cornerstone of the 360 library and Gears 3 will sell that way.
The Gears series is one of my all time favorites for a reason. The gameplay is entertaining, the graphics pleasing enough, and the universe & storyline are enjoyable as well. Day 1 buy for me and I would speculate many...
I'm thinking at least $0.25 every time the little fella' bites it.
Sound about right, Kotick?
@ Conloles => that's funniest thing I've read all day. That I would actually consider paying extra for!
...like until it hits sale price on Steam or something like that.
I enjoyed the first Lost Planet, but the second one had some spots that were designed terribly. Frame rate issues & graphical hiccups were one complaint, but there are spots that reek of plain bad game design. Look at a review of the original LP and you'll see a lot of the problems carried over from the first - like there was no effort to improve upon it.
IMHO, it still had some good ...
Space Quest - bingo! I was trying to remember the name "that other series" that Sierra had that I loved so much. You nailed it - thanks!
Wonder if they'll ever re-release that as a package on Steam...
My mom ran one of the first computer stores and I remember playing the original King's Quest thinking it would never get any better than that.
Have to say, those games haven't exactly stood the test of time (picked up the King's Quest pack off Steam last year, found it hard to believe how my memories were so much better than what was there).
But it does make me realize how incredible the advances are from that time to now. Amazing.
...but 5 million - let me do the math. Yup, that's about 1 sale for every time I've wished this guy would shut his trap. I guess this guy subscribes to the theory that any publicity is good (but he's still miles better than Dyack, IMHO - I'll give him that much).
Regardless, I agree, given the multiplat release he'll probably still get the 5 million in sales if the game is great.
Fable 2 not hitting PC probably did alienate some fans, bu...
... a ton of work went into Starcraft II, and it shows. This wasn't a sequel cash-in like so many other games we see on every platform.
I would hope any RTS gamer out there would give props to the devs in the form of buying SC2 so that we continue to see high quality games like this.
To anyone who did pirate the game, do everyone else a favor: go buy a copy. Seriously. You damn well know you should.
Because it didn't outsell MW2? Who cares - that doesn't make it less of a game.
I can't speak to the DLC - I rarely buy DLC unless it's on sale or something like that.
The graphics, gameplay, and destructibility were excellent, IMHO. Personally, I enjoyed it more than MW2.
I'll admit that I was frustrated at launch (I had the VIP code problems, actually). But that was more minor annoyance than actual detraction from the...
...unless the GoW team designed the entire thing, it's probably destined for mediocrity.
I'm sure it will be bloody as hell (I remember playing the original back in the day).
But a must buy? Maybe when it hits the bargain bin, IMHO.
Aside from the blood & gore, comparing this to GoW or Gears will probably border on criminal. I'd love for this to be a great game - and I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong - but given it...
...for a review to come out, what, 6 months after the original release date?
More than a little late to the party.
Loved the original. Couldn't put it down until I got the plat. Games that hook me like that are rare.
Tried Prototype. It was ok, but for whatever reason it just paled in comparison. Maybe it was the lack of polish. I never finished it and haven't gotten back around to it.
