I've used it and had a lot of fun. Every technology has some limitation, and it is more matter of using it's strength than it's weakness.
Have you guys used Kinect? You know, especially since you are all criticizing it before release?
I don't know why, but it seems everyone thinks the heart of the technology is the depth sensing camera. Sure, without the camera the motion tracking wouldn't be possible in that manner, but depth sensing exist in many forms not just time of flight and so on.
The heart of all this and the genius of it is the software ability to track a person. This brew out from combining multiple research papers that only recently have been released.
I recommend readi...
LOL!
"The first Kinect prototype cost Microsoft $30,000 to build, but 1,000 workers would eventually be involved in the project. And now, hundreds of millions of dollars later, the company has a product it can sell for $150 a pop and still turn a profit, Mr. Mattrick says."
I sort of share your sentiment. The PS3 exclusives do look good, but reality is that it isn't jaw dropping.
Jaw dropping for me was when I saw one of the early basketball games on the PS3 way back when it was initially released. At the time I hadn't seen Xbox 360 games, but only seen PS2 and owned an original Xbox. That is a huge leap!
Then I got an Xbox and it was good. Halo 3 was decent, but nothing jaw dropping. Then I saw Gears of War and I was ex...
Not to be an @ss, but if you were waiting for GT5.... You are still waiting!!!
Point is a list is useless, if it is so far into the future I don't give a d@mn! Just about any PS3 exclusive, I keep hearing about it year after year. By the time it is released, I'm not that interested anymore because I'm sick of hearing about it.
Spending money on making sure the adoption of Kinect is high, is ensuring the future of Kinect will be positive. No matter how cool the technology is, without a large enough install base nobody will care to make software for it.
Investing in Kinect is a GOOD idea. Investing in Massive was a BAD idea!!!
Yeah, but I can get another Sony or even Samsung branded TV of the same size for less than half of that now!
I think I will stick to my 40" Sony HDTV until 3D is so cheap it is standard and the darn glasses are more comfortable. Heck, by then we might already have gotten 3D without glasses!
On the other hand, if you are in the market for a 3D TV, I believe that is a steal!
Nobody is denying that the depth sensing camera was developed by another company than MS. Heck, there are others beyond 3DV and PrimeSense.
"Just saying developed "in-house" is just play on words. All that happens AFTER the aquisistion. Then MS can just stamp their logo on it. Simple."
What is developed by MS is the motion capture software that maps a persons body to a skeleton that enables Kinect to do what it does. Software is the heart ...
@plb
"No, MS brought the tech. Sony and Nintendo passed on the opportunity years ago."
That is BS!
The camera was created by PrimeSense using infrared although MS owns the other company creating the competing technology for depth sensing cameras, Time of Flight.
The heart and meat of this is the software behind it all.
The software technology behind the ability to motion capture a person is develope...
Kinect is doing fantastic and I look forward to what developers will do with it in the future. In the meanwhile, I'm looking forward to the games created by those Japanese developers.
Oh... and navigating my dash controller free!
... or *shock and horror* customers think the service is worth paying for!
If it is so bad, MS is:
- ripping you off on Xbox Live fees
- inferior hardware
- expensive accessories
- inferior exclusive games (or games in general)
Why isn't there a mass exodus to the PS3 or Wii? Why is it continuing to sell and increasing sales?
It might be hard to fathom it if you have a bias, but to the vast majorit...
I agree, I also think the Achievement system they introduced is awesome despite MS not inventing it, they certainly popularized it on consoles!
They also introduced Netflix, which is the second thing I do most on my consoles these days!
MS hyping their product makes perfect sense, since they are trying to sell you a product? I have yet to see a company not WANT to create hype for their product. If they do, I doubt they will exist for too long.
Falling for it is such a ridiculous term. Did you fall for it when you purchased your PS3? Everybody places value on a product differently, and if you are in the US, you have 30-days to return the product in most cases if it isn't up to snuff.

You are just trolling, but I will respond for the uninformed:
"Retailers sold a pre-order of their allocated stock that MS has allocated to them. They can no longer take more orders, until they can guarantee enough units are allocated to them to fulfill their existing orders."
The fact that there are numerous report from various retailers about shortages pre-release is pretty damning evidence that it is going to be hot this Christmas for MS!
Except, the branding ensures driver support which is non-existant on Sony computers.
Personally, I only buy Lenovo Thinkpads, but would consider Dell. Heck Thinkpads gets updated drivers for 3-4 year old computers and often times get updated drivers for new OS. Most of the extra software utilities they make are updated on a frequent basis including older machines.
Sony Laptops are the most overpriced laptops next to Apple. At least Apple is exquisite!
If you did not, chances are you won't even read this comment.
With that said, they are pulling pre-orders because demand is exceeding supply prior to release. It has nothing to do with the quality of the product!
Technically, shipped is sold in Sony's eyes. Sony wouldn't take bake the shipped units, hence it is sold.
It's just the misconception that consumers assume that sold means to customer, but Sony's customer is technically first and foremost retailers whom then resell them to consumers.
With that said, why are they all of sudden lumping in Latin America with North America?
That is why Wii Fit sold 22+ million copies. That is more than any multi-platform or exclusive game this generation!
To add insul to injury, Wii Fit retailed at $99!
The question would be if it is enforceable? There are plenty of laws that are there, but not upheld because people would frown upon it and with people I mean potentially countries or other entities.
