Considering some PSPro launch titles are already hitting 4K native, I'd hold that thought until we see what the games are going to do.... However, Sony has made no attempt at hiding the fact that the games are upscaled. Cerny talked about it at the conference, how the Polaris architecture enabled them to hit 4K without having to render native (via chekerboard rendering, which isn't the same as upsaling, by the way). However, considering almost all reports are saying the games do look ...

@darth You are right, the dynamics of the console generation are undergoing change, but Sony is going to be reactive to the market, they aren't going to force a 6 year cycle on the market if Scorpio begins to pose a threat. I'm sure they are already well on their way to having at least concept designs for what PS5 will be even at this point, and if they see a need to go ahead and drop a new product, because another company is pulling ahead, they will go for a 5 year generation and rel...

It is considering it is going to be the strongest console ever for over a year. With Scorpio releasing so late, it might only get to enjoy that "strongest console" title for a few months before the announcement of PS5 begins to steal its thunder. Those 6 teraflops won't mean much if Sony turns around a few months later at GDC or E3 and says PS5 will be launching with 8-12TFlops. Couple PS4 Pro already enjoying a year's worth of updated PS4 games, and Scorpio not having much ...

Microsoft has put themselves into a tough position, as by releasing Scorpio, if it really is intended to be a current gen update like Pro is, delays the end of this console generation for at least 2-3 more years before they'll be able to put another system on the market and not piss off a bunch of fans who just bought Scorpio, as well as confuse the market who wouldn't know which system was the one to get if they haven't been educated about it (and most gamers don't follow gam...

@undertaker, Uncharted 4 MP runs at 60fps 900p.

https://www.vg247.com/2015/...

As for KZSF, it was a launch title for crying out loud. I can forgive a few frames dropped in MP considering the rushed development cycle, etc. It hits 60fps most of the time. Not enough drops for me to cry about PS4 Pro not making them better. Besides, it was a mediocre game to begin wi...

Why not let the players choose whether or not they have an unfair advantage? Because it ruins the experience for the players who do not get to choose. Suddenly those who can't afford to fork out another $400 for the new system cannot win MP matches because half the people in the game are running the game at double the frame rate.

However, because the vast majority of online titles on PS4 run at 60fps when in MP, this is a non-issue.

That HDR update for the old ps4... one of the only times a console did prove to have a little "secret sauce" after all.

Actually, HDMI 1.4a can do 4K, but only at 30fps (so it should be fine for 24fps films) and 8 bit color, (I have personally tested this by hooking my old Radeon HD 6870 GPU up to a 4K TV. With a patch that enabled me to set my own custom resolutions, I was able to output at 4K but only at a 30hz refresh rate.) it can't do 4K with 10 or 12 bit HDR color, or 4k at 60fps. So, it's possible that the older PS4s might get an update too later down the line, but doubtful since Sony will likel...

PS4 launched without media playback capabilities, and limited Blu-Ray playback capabilities (no 3D Blu-Ray at launch). Now it has MP3, DLNA, 3DBD, HDR, etc. Sony very obviously put getting the right gaming features into the firmware as a top priority before they even considered media. It appears this time is no different.

It's likely the same drive, which if this patent is correct should be more than capable of reading three layer blu-rays as long as the firmware can tell the system how to deal with the changed error correction system.

The older systems could do HDR, and 4K, but not at the same time and no 4K above 30 frames per second either. HDMI 1.4 maxes out at 4K30fps with 8 bit per pixel color (HDR is 10-12 bits per pixel, which gives 4096 times more colors).

It isn't required, the current model should already be able to do it with a firmware update.

Considering it's coming out on the tail end of this generation, it had better be more powerful than everything else on the market. This isn't Nintendo we're talking about. MS can't get away with releasing a weaker system like Ninty (barely) can. They don't have the first party lineup.

The reason the error codes get inverted is because not all v1 players have the capability to decode 4K HDR, so the likelyhood of poor playback quality is much higher (if the player can even recognize the codec, it may not have a powerful enough processor to decode the video smoothly). It makes sure only devices they know adhere to the v2 spec are able to play back the discs. PS4 Pro has all that is required to decode 4K HDR video, and it has the HDMI 2.0a port to enable it to send that video ...

Read the article... according to it there is no such thing as a UHD drive, it uses the same base tech as traditional blu-ray as far as the reading capability is concerned. There is a patent quoted in the article, filed by Sony, that clearly states that version 1 players could be able to play version 2 discs if it weren't for the error correcting codes being jumbled up on v2 discs on purpose, so the v1 players wouldn't be able to read them. As such, a firmware update telling the PS4 Pr...

It'll launch cheaper than that... it has a year to drive prices down. However, it'll launch too late to catch up to Pro. By the time it starts to get some legs under it, PS5 will be launching.

^As someone who makes them, it's a big deal for me. I want to be able to watch my videos at full quality. Having a few dozen movies to choose from is kinda cool too.

For those of you who want to read up on how BD drives can be updated to enable UHD compatibility, this post on NeoGAF sums it up nicely.

Glad to be able to help. I do video production for a living, and author both standard and UHD Blu-Rays, so I have to keep up with all that stuff.

While it is true that you can stream most content, our crappy internet connections do not support anywhere near the data transfer rate of a UHD Blu-Ray, and as such you will not get anywhere near the quality out of the 4K HDR stream as you would from a 4K HDR video on a UHD BD. You're talking less than 20mbps (no streaming service is going to offer more than that for the time being) vs. up to 128mbps for UHD BD. If you're adding 4 times the resolution of 1080p and 4,096 times the poss...

If we're talking about $600 and up PC VR headsets, yes. If you are talking about a $460 VR kit (or $500 if you want the full kit with 2 move controllers and a 4 in 1 collection of VR games.) releasing to an install base of 40 million capable consoles with an exclusive game library that the PC kits ca...

Fact is, by the time we're even able to buy a Scorpio, we'll be saving our lunch money for the newly announced PS5. Microsoft is in a bad spot, as Pro will have had a year long head start by then, which is going to make it the industry standard "top tier" gaming console, and most games are going to target its capabilities due to it having a larger install base from its head start. So, you won't see many devs maxing out Scorpio's capabilities at launch and for a while...
