You can't call PS4's method direct "upscaling" however. It is far more effective than a traditional upscaler, which takes hold of the frame after it has already been rendered by the GPU and then stretches its pixels to fill a higher resolution frame before applying sharpening to bring out false detail and smoothing effects to help hide the pixelation. PS4's method works within the GPU itself, rendering out 2 1080p (or higher) images, which fills in about half the pixels ...

California: We're going to require PC manufacturers to raise prices by $18 per system so you can save $75 on electricity, a PROFIT of $57.

"Fiscal Conservatives": Waaaaaaaaaaah! You commie bastards a taking my money! We should be free to pollute the planet as much as we want!

Yeah, those government types and their ability to get 99% of the world's scientists to agree with them without a single one blowing the conspiracy wide open... The most air-tight conspiracy in the history of human kind, right?

Just like I said before... 2018 is a real possibility depending on how the market reacts to Scorpio. Sony likely has 2 targets in mind for what PS5 could be. One that could release at the tail end of 2018 that would be able to cost $400, and another that they could release the following year and stay at $400.

I also expect some sort of forward compatibility with the new playstation for the first year or so, meaning all PS4's (or at least PS4 PRo) will be able to play du...

They didn't say that any of them ran at native 4K. They only showed how they were using polaris to hit 4K from lower resolutions. Even though the last of us is native 4K, they still didn't say the words "native 4K" one time the entire conference.

@sam

No VR: It's a fad and it will fade away until years later
It's been around for years and is still here...

No game sharing: Ok

Inferior resolution/frames: Barely shows
40% to over 100% (depending on if the game is running at 900p or 720p vs. 1080p) more pixels does indeed show, and as much as double the frame rate definitely shows as well and can actually affect how smoothly the game plays.

So we have the uninformed Xbox fanboy spreading nonsense (PS4 is supporting mods, and has for a while, even Fallout 4 mods are now coming to PS4 as well, and HDR is available on all PS4's and isn't "fake". HDMI 1.4 already supports 10-12 bit color).

Now an uninformed PC fanboy spreading more:

They said they overclocked Pro's CPU
They detailed the 1080p enhancements in the conference you didn't watch

Hater still hatin'... What about

*No VR
*No Instant Gamesharing/couch multiplayer over LAN
*Even with the updated slim system still getting inferior resolutions and frame rates as original PS4
*No Game Streaming Service
*No Upgradeable Internal Hard Drive, so you're limited by USB 3.0's bandwidth on all games unless you use the stock internal HDD.
*No remote play to portable devices
*No Cross Play with Portab...

Mario Kart could be cool as well.

Since he is the father of Mario, he gets to choose what is a right fit or not. He obviously has tried it and didn't like it. First person mario would defeat the purpose, as you no longer are playing as an adorable plumber, but as plain old you. VR in third person can cause dizziness in certain gameplay environments, so he probably has good reason to not want to do it.

They dropped one game that was able to take the entire globe by storm. I still see crowds of dozens to hundreds out hunting pokemon all hours of the night. Mario will also be successful, just from name recognition alone even if the game sucks.

Actually, PS Pro has different graphics settings if you hook it up to a 1080p display (or tell it to output at 1080 to a 4k display), so if the developer chooses, when you play pro games in 1080, you can get higher quality effects, faster frame rates, etc. than you would get in 4k mode.

Cerny said, in his creepily calm voice, that they were using polaris GPU architecture to enable hitting 4K without having to actually render 4K, referencing the checkerboard (and other methods) rendering that PS4 Pro can use at no penalty to performance to enable higher than 1080p resolutions (but not 4K) to be upscaled to 4K at a much higher quality than if a traditional upscaler was used.

Gotta love how Dasteru leaves out the free games you get for being a member of PS+/XBL among all those bogus numbers.

That's true for 1080p movies, the untrained eye can miss out on the extra detail, but for 4K HDR, those extra 100mbps or so that it offers makes the world of difference. You are adding 4 times the resolution of 1080p, 4096 times the colors, and yet they still expect 15mbps to do the trick (I don't even encode my 1080p Blu-Rays that low, 24mbps is what I aim for). It'll do it, but it won't look anywhere near as good as UHD BD in HDR would.

3566d ago 2 agree0 disagreeView comment

There's only a few dozen UHD Blu-Rays to choose from currently, I doubt Sony is very worried about that. They didn't even bother to release a stand alone UHD BD player, citing that they were waiting on more content before they did. They aren't releasing one until next year. Sony helped invent the format, if even they don't think it's ready to support, I'd say they are right.

"What you wrote doesn't make sense"

What a compelling argument.

Also, Xbox One S is not a 4K system. It plays 4K video, not games. Also, according to Sony's patent on UHD discs, the only thing preventing the older drives from reading newer discs is the fact that they purposely inverted certain blocks of data in the error correction codes so that the old drives, while they could read the discs, wouldn't be able to understand what it w...
