If EPIC suddenly enabled user reviews (not opt-in by the dev either) and was building similar features as Steam, I'd consider buying. But it really seems EPIC is less consumer friendly than Steam with their current user review capabilities. So no offense to 4A, but I'll not help EPIC right now.
Well it does feel like EA is not a creative force. A bunch of MBA's in the bay area looking at market trends. The only innovation EA has made recently is FIFA UT loot boxes. And by innovation, I mean a terrible consumer manipulation of fans. Respawn makes what they are asked to make.
I do agree I don't care for such exclusivity. Sure this business practice was not started by Sony but clearly, it is effective from a marketing perspective. Perhaps the saying should be, "For Our Players". I guess MS get's to continue to face this tactic some more. MS has money though. Why did they not try to buy some exclusivity?
It may be legitimate in his eyes but I am sure as heck not going to buy it from the EPIC store. I just don't like the business practice. Less choice for a game they had no hand in producing. I'd prefer the game is offered in multiple stores. I think the sales of the game will suffer. Many people will just not play the game on PC. I read EPIC was going to have "opt-in" reviews. Meaning opt-in by the publisher. Gotta control that marketing message.
This is EPIC throwing around Fornite money to buy exclusivity for a game they didn't even have a hand in making. Sure competition for Steam is a good thing but not like this. Why not just have the game on both stores? The EPIC store lack of features, especially user reviews is concerning. At this point, I just won't buy Metro Exodus. It's a shame. This is not the dev's doing but their publisher. Don't people like a free and open marketplace? Real competition is a good thin...
Well sure Sony doesn't want the controversy. But frankly it is in their interest to have back compat going forward. WIth back compat in PS5 they can leverage the very large install base of users who will want to play their existing games. Not having back compat would provide an opening for people to consider switching platforms again. I am glad PS5 will have back compat considering I have a sizeable library of PS4 games. 7
@DefenderofDoom2 What is useful about Steam user reviews is they are accompanied by the number of hours a person played the game. So it is known that the account posting the review actually owns and has played teh game. But yes I do agree that it is still important to watch streams or YT vids of a game before making a purchasing decision.
Frankly it's also publishers who don't like user reviews alongside their game. When a publisher / dev make a game with poor mechanics or business practices in it, users like to let them know it's unpopular. Some people would rather stick their head in the sand and just believe what a publisher says. Sure Valve's pricing model may have been not as competitive as EPIC's but EPIC store currently has some serious drawbacks which are not just that it is another launcher. That...
@Ciporta1980 Actually it's not about the launcher. A new launcher is the least of the problem. It's EPIC's attempt to silence user game reviews by omitting any user review section. I like the idea of competition for Steam but at least Steam marks the number of hours played next to a users review. It gives some context to a review that a person actually owns and plays the game. But publishers are afraid of user's critical reviews. Perhaps EPIC will oneday empower users to revi...
@Profchaos For me it's less about the additional launcher than the lack of user reviews and exclusivity. Currently having no user reviews is a minus IMO. Publishers would like to stifle user reviews on the store where they hope to sell you their game. Why not sell the game on both Steam, EPIC, and others? Perhaps Valve will modify their cost model for publishers someday. Or maybe EPIC will enable reviews in their store.
I will not purchase any game on PC exclusive to the EPIC store. So two games which I had interest are off my buy list, The Div 2 and Metro Exodus. I like competition for Valve but not this way. Plus EPIC has no user reviews on their store. Valve's user reviews which show the number of hours played alongside the user who posted the review are very useful. I am not blindly loyal to Valve / Steam but EPIC's storefront is not the way to go right now.
The publishers want to move to a sales platform where there are no user reviews. Steam user reviews can be very useful but publishers find it is better to hide negativity so sales of a poor game cannot be impeded by the truth. I'm all for competition for Valve but not this way. I will not purchase any game from the EPIC store which is exclusive to them. So Metro Exodus and The Div 2 are out for me. Steam user reviews show the number of hours played on a game from a user on their review....
One problem with the EPIC store is there are no reviews. I think publishers have grown weary of the review bombing on Steam even though I think the reviews are generally very beneficial to the consumer. When a publisher screws up people let them hear about it. I like the idea of competition but frankly, exclusivity is not really competition.
I think that is Sony's major advantage going into next gen. The huge install base will likely look to stay with their current platform. Existing game's library which will likely have backward compat with PS5. Also many if not all of their friends will also be on PS5. It's hard to get people to switch platform. Sony has clear momentum advantage. And frankly, like me, much of the X1 install base also owns a PS4 too. But if I had only 1 console it'd have to be the Sony. It ...
I agree it is the job of parents to mind what their kids are consuming. But a rating of 'M' is useful for parent's who don't game. as the OP said above, publishers want to avoid an 'M' rating as they think all games are for kids. It would be nice if studios made the game they want, publishers marketed it with an 'M' is necessary, and adults could buy it without restriction. The problem is, publishers, don't want to restrict their market by limiting a la...
U.S. needs tort law reform. Sre are some ridiculous lawsuits. Perhaps the person or group filing the complaint should have the risk of having to pay the defendants legal expenses if they lose.
This subscription model could end up being a real mess someday. A sub for MS Studio, a sub for Bethesda, a sub for EA, a sub for Ubisoft, etc etc. Plus movies on Netflix and games on Gamepass do not necessarily exist on that service forever. In the long run, you will spend more on gaming than now. Why else would all these companies be doing this? To save us money? Yea right.
I was wondering the same a couple weeks ago, how can a person own a dance. But apparently one can copyright a dance. I did not know that. Seems odd to me but it is the law in the U.S. But these claims are surely fishing for a payoff. Fornite is so popular and successful (revenue wise) it is a target. It is cringeworthy a game like Forza has dance moves.
'Lifetime' for a regular KFC eater equates to a relatively short life.
It's not about the installer for me. It's about EPIC creating a storefront which enables publishers to ignore user feedback and promote sales of games by hiding legitimate feedback from customers. I don't buy games like it is some charitable donation to hard working devs. I appreciate their hard work and recognize not all outcomes are the sole responsibility of the devs. They take marching orders from publishers too. I'll bet if you asked the devs they would have said to relea...
