I honestly don't think we need to go as far as FF7R did, even making it as graphically appealing as Secrets or Trials of Mana would be enough, an AA budget would be enough for these games. Making them on the level of Resident Evil 2/FF7R might be to expensive with today's technology. I'd even take a remaster at this point with higher res textures (you can probably do this with AI and some touch ups by hand).
It was okay when I played it on PC, idk if I'd consider it one of the more beloved games of that generation.
Not by a long shot, you still have to sift through a lot of mediocre titles, but there are plenty of gems there, and room for even more now that people are buying less AAA games.
At this point, why bothering buying now unless you need a new GPU? The 5000 series is coming out soon, even if you don't buy a 50xx GPU, the older generation will be even cheaper after they release.
It's a good time to wait.
You shouldn't be listening to them in the first place, their opinion is the minority, a lot of them don't play games or hate the community in general. Some can't even play games (look at IGN with Doom 2016 and Cuphead gameplay), or they make stupid comments like "too much water" in a Pokemon game.
Or the majority of the gaming news media, you can see a lot of them have started back peddling, even Kotaku is back peddling now that they see they're the minority.
I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.
@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.
@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I...
The PS1 library was so amazing, I would have settled for most of them being available for modern systems, but seeing a remaster/remake is also valid.
Idk if I agree, there is a retro revival among young people at the moment as people are getting sick of modern gaming issue. Now would be a perfect time to take advantage of that fact and revive some of these titles while the interest is there, I know what you mean about the familiarity/nostalgia, but some of these games hold legendary status. I would be happy to see the younger generation enjoy them too with a fresh coat of paint, and there's already quite a few remakes/remasters in this...
There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.
That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).
I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.
@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.
I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.
You'll probably find it's the same case for Movies and Comic Books too, the newer ones aren't selling as well (also doesn't help that Disney owns most of the movie studios).
There are a billion reasons for this, from incomplete and bug ridden games, higher prices, paywalling or carving out main features, DLC, microtransactions, unnecessary remakes/remasters, ESG/DEI infestation... The list goes on, no wonder people are choosing retro games over modern ones, there are some really great, timeless classics there.
Imagine trying to nickle and dime your customers with incomplete games while preaching to them, hopefully the industry eventually self-c...
Not a great article, but anyway, I'm not happy with the exclusives' situation on PS as it is, in the case of Xbox, they had to port the games to stay relevant. Nintendo won't port their games, as that'll reduce the need to purchase their hardware, and Nintendo still makes bank off their hardware and games.
Hard pass.
The more important take away is that either extremes of the spectrum is bad, I personally call that extremist territory. Ideally we should be somewhere in the middle, I lean left, but not as far left as these people proposing all the "woke" stuff that most people universally hate (e.g. I like Star Trek, but think most of Star Trek Discovery's run was mediocre to terrible depending on the episode).
