An "advanced on-rails shooter"?

Seriously, guys? If Dead Space:Extraction didn't fool anyone, why do you think GR will?

I swear to FSM, Ubi must be nuts.

You're talkin' too much sense, Arius. ; )

There were a lot of reasons for why RS2 didn't sell well. But...I mean, you can say that about a lot of games. You can talk about why Okami, or God Hand, or Metal Arms, or Killer 7 didn't sell well until you're blue in the face. Some games, even really good ones, just don't catch on.

That's something that kinda irks me, too, Spoony. You can't totally pass the buck. Vandenberghe and his team didn't just miss their initial deadline, they missed the launch of Motion Plus entirely. Maybe RS2 does a little better if it isn't SO LATE to the party. It worked OK for Tiger Woods on Wii.

Part of it is "poisoning the well." The first Red Steel didn't just suck. It sucked a big hard one (for a $50 game, that is; hey if you find it used for $2, knock yourself out).

Then, to make matters worse, Vandenberghe and his team (who really poured a lot into this game) missed their holiday deadline. They were also WAY behind other games that launched alongside M+ (Tiger Woods certainly did just fine), and THAT should've been the release time they shot...

Indeed. If we've learned one thing these past few years, it's that conventional wisdom from "industry veterans" isn't exactly predictive of the future.

4:3 is the aspect ratio, not the resolution. You can play the trilogy compilation in 16:9 widescreen.

However, you're gonna be stuck at 480p, although that shouldn't be much of a deterrent at all if you enjoyed any games from last gen.

That said, the Prime games are an acquired taste. They are quite methodical, and the big payoff is from careful exploration. Other M will retain some of that, but it looks to have a lot more of the old 2D games style...

This is one title where I pretty much have no trust in "gaming journalists." A lot of 'em still called this game "2D" AFTER they had actually played it. The new conventional wisdom is that the controls are "stiff" (which, is obvious, since they're digital, which is always stiffer than analog; that there are benefits to tighter control is apparently irrelevant).

Wait a minute...Super Metroid and ALttP are "great at any resolution" (and do tell what higher resolution you've been playing them at, btw), but current-day stuff can't be good if it's stuck at 480p?

That makes zero sense. You're trying to make the argument that gameplay is more important than graphics...except for the present day. The gameplay either holds up, or it doesn't. That's the whole point of the Wii, anyway. Of course this doesn...

This.

Metroid has always been an acquired taste. That's why it has never, and probably never will, sell like the Halos, GTAs and CODs. But for those dedicated to the series, this is the first game of its kind since 1994, and nothing else released this year is even attempting to cover the same ground. GOTY-caliber for me, personally, without doubt. For others? Probably not.

"Why is this a Metroid game?"
-----------------------------

Why not? It takes the series back to third-person action, incorporates Prime's FP view for certain things, and finally gives Samus some countermoves for close-quarters combat (anyone who has ever had a space pirate in their face doing damage in Prime knows how frustrating it is).

And if you hated Samus' inner monologue...you must've hated Fusion. Or her text narration ...

Especially this year. Sky Crawlers, NMH2, Tat v. Cap, RS2, MH:Tri, SMG2, S&P2, and then Other M later this month. If someone's Wii is collecting dust this year, they're missing out on a whole lot of win.

"It also felt like the game plays itself a lot of the time due to its auto-targetting system."
----------------------------- ------------------------------

:sigh: Oh, Craig. Of course the AUTO targeting feels that way. That's why it's...AUTO targeting. Are people really attached to tapping a shoulder button first to initiate an AUTO lock-on? Instead of just tapping a button in Other M, you actually have to get a line of sight.

A...

The author linked to this in his new hands-on, but it's worth supplying the link to read for anyone that misses it:

This guy KNOWS Metroid...and him being able to jump right into this one without any problems speaks well for Project M's work.

"Metroid: Other M definitely has a big focus on the storytelling, but Nintendo wants to reassure fans that Sakamoto's vision of that old Metroid feel has a large presence as well. That's why Nintendo showed off the game once again, this time plopping players about an hour into the experience. I played Other M for about a solid hour and can happily say that feeling of despair as you explore every inch of an environment is ever present."

That's what I'm talkin' about. I want to see the story Sakamoto has weaved together, too, but give me those hours of being completely alone, exploring unforgiving terrain. And at long last, no jumping away while a pirate in your grill does damage to you the whole time. CQC makes sense for Samus, IMO.

lol, y'know, I honestly felt the same way about the inventory selection. I can't ever recall being hyped for a simple thing like selecting INVENTORY.

As tunaks said, good read. I like the "back to basics" ethos. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Zelda puzzles...but I love Zelda's action and sense of adventure even more.

It's definitely the D-pad (making it easy to run in a straight line), but it's also the camera; framing the action from the side throws people. But really, if you were to put Metroid Prime in third person, any of the narrow corridors could have had the same thing done. I suppose that's what gets me...after walking through so many narrow hallways in Prime, simply changing the viewing angle (in addition to the perspective) didn't make me think of Other M as 2D.

"Though the camera would sometimes swoop to frame the action in 2D, Samus never lost the ability to move in all directions. Granted, this didn’t affect my playing; I still breezed through hallways and bridges in a beeline. It filled my brain with fond memories of past single-plane Metroid adventures, but in reality it was a trompe l’oeil – a trick of the eye. I knew Samus was in a 3D environment, but the lack of analog movement and the position of the camera often made me believe it had ...

Truth.

Compare Miyamoto's onscreen demo to ANY of the youtube vids of other people playing the exact same demo, and experiencing none of the same problems.
