You lucky SOB! To actually get to play Super for the first time? I'm jealous.

I'm sure you've already read it...but the cut scenes seem to be concentrated at the very beginning, and at the very end (a bit like Corruption, now that I think of it). And I've read they actually get a bit better as the game goes on. I'm not big on games that place story over gameplay, so I may gnash my teeth a little through the first hour, too.

But I have a feeling it's gonna be worth it. I'll PM you tomorrow night, once I've yanked myself aw...

The story is written from a more Eastern sensibility. Just read the manga and you'll get an idea about the direction that Other M is going in. TBH, it's an acquired taste. I wouldn't have even finished reading the Metroid manga if I wasn't a huge 'Troid fan. The details were corny, but the overall narrative wasn't. I expect the same outta Other M. The voice acting and dialog will probably fall flat in places...but the overall plot will probably keep my interest. ...

lol, y'know, you're absolutely right about Donkey Kong Country. It overshadowed Super back on SNES, and as DKCR gets the prime holiday slot this year, I'm betting it does the exact same thing to Other M.

But I've pretty much given up on most "professional" reviews. I'll comment on them (mostly to poke holes in the reviews' points), but like you, I pay WAY more attention to independent blogs and user reviews.

Notice a theme here? Some of the "big" media outlets that rely on numerical scores (and hits from metacritic) end up giving a lower score (some that don't even seem to have finished the game)? Meanwhile, the more in-depth reviews that don't give a numerical score have been routinely high?

Funny how that works.

Well yeah...but there was Metroid, Return of Samus and Super.

Then Other M. Then Fusion, which is marked as "Metroid 4" in-game.

So Other M is kinda like Metroid...3.5, I guess.

FINALLY. I was wondering how long it would take to get some reviews that mentioned just how many design risks this game takes. From a design perspective, I can't think of another game this ambitious: it's a third-person action/adventure/platformer/sh ooter/brawler/sidescroller/fixe d camera non-sidescroller; with first-person shooting/minimal scanning/investigating. All with simplified/streamlined controls that combine the digital movement of the NES' D-pad with the Wii remote&#...

lol

A game that hasn't even been released yet...that has a LOT of positive reviews (a few mixed, and only one really negative one from a laughable source)...has already "flopped"?

Seriously, where do you folks come up with this stuff?

I never DL-ed the original Metroid. I have Super Metroid on my first menu screen, but not the original, because I already had it; it was unlockable with Zero Mission on the GBA. And TBH, ZM is the better game. IMO, at least.

I wonder how many people have been playing Super...?

Most of the reviews have been positive; they just haven't been as high as the Prime series got (but even Echoes and Corruption didn't score as well as the original). There have been a few mixed ones, and one very negative one (the laughable G4 one).

I have no doubt I'll have fun with Other M, but it was always going to be a bit divisive because of its quirky game mechanics and choice of delivery for the overall narrative. And that probably also lends itself to s...

I think that's where there's been a sort of schism; people listening to an internal monologue are confusing that with how the character actually does her work.

Samus is no wimp. But she has emotional issues from her line of work, and she thinks about that. This doesn't fit in with the silent protagonist who never expresses any fears, so people are freaking out. But that's the same Samus that was shown in the manga and in Fusion. Kinda like Peter Parker als...

Shh...you're assuming people actually have any clue about the canonical mythology of Metroid. These people pretending Samus has been a silent protagonist forgot she spoke -- albeit in text -- all the way back in Super. And she sounds detached and has neuroses for a reason: she spends all of her time alone going on suicide missions.

Mafia II says the same thing about the industry that the first Mafia did. Anyone who picks up Mafia expecting a "GTA-like experience" must have completely ignored the first title in the series. It features a big city as a backdrop for atmosphere, not as a playground.

A decent mob story mixed with prosaic game mechanics equals a good, but average game. Most games ARE average. They can't all be Zelda or Mass Effect 2.

Other M has actually gotten pretty solid reviews. Just a few mixed ones, too (plus G4's troll-fest). GT's even sounds negative throughout, but that's just them focusing on the details. Overall, they really liked the game (their podcast mentioned this).

Considering their complaints, I'm not worried.

There's a legitimate discussion to be had on sexism in gaming (just look at Team Ninja's other games). Most females are treated as sex objects viewed through an adolescent's lens.

But complaining that Samus has to take orders from her COMMANDING OFFICER? Seriously? She'...

Unfortunately, that's how she came about this opinion.

I...got nothin'. It's an in-game device that serves the function of Samus losing all of her abilities (again). So Samus has to take orders from a COMMANDING OFFICER...and apparently that's sexist.

There truly is a lot of sexism in the gaming industry (hell, just look at some of Team Ninja's other games). But this? This reads like someone trying to cover their collective asses over ...

"Abbie Heppe is definitely not a fan of the characterization of Samus in the game, going as far as to say that it's sexist, and that 'If I heard somebody say that they liked that characterization, I would probably not want to speak to them or be friends with them ever again.'"

No need to apologize, amigo. ; )

Plus, tunas has a good list, too. I think it's the tone of some of the reviews, where you expect the score to be even lower...but it still ends up being around an 80.
