This one was destined to be a love-it or hate-it game. Some people tuned this one out as soon as they heard "digital controls" and "Samus talks."
Yep. Kinda natural, I guess. People can't help but rubberneck by a train wreck (like the laughable G4 "review").
I think there was a line with this game: reviewers either dug just how different this game was in its design philosophy, or they completely tuned it out.
lol
I mentioned the same thing in the Wired.com review. Positive reviews don't get hits/comments like negative ones do.
But I knew this game would be a divisive, love-it or hate-it affair. But I had no idea it would THIS weird.
The combat is either too easy for some, or it's too hard for others.
It's either too linear for some, or it's too hard to progress for others.
The FP view is either too clunky for some...
Notice how positive reviews never get any hits/comments?
GI's second opinion score for Metroid Prime Trilogy called the controls a "gimpy waggle interface." I haven't listened to them since. They are the fashion magazine of gaming.
I tried to watch their vid on this. Tried. I thought they were supposed to be gaming journalists, not internet trolls.
(And yeah...I know reviews are subjective. But 2/5 is a score for Carnival Games or something. Shovelware.)
Not surprising. I thought reviews for this would be all over the place, and I haven't been surprised, lol.
I expect plenty of relatively "low" reviews for Other M. It's a game with a quirky control scheme and a new style of storytelling (by Metroid standards).
And I expect plenty of those lower reviews to make completely valid points about how the game just didn't resonate with them.
But this? Read the comment sections. The "reviewer" is barely 5 hours in (1/3 of the way, according to Project M, and that's if you're really ru...
I expect scores to be all over the map, for the very reason you mentioned: this game is trying a lot of new things.
The first 3rd person 3D Metroid? Played with digital controls? Plus IR aiming for first person? A simplified "modern NES" overall feel? Full auto-camera instead of manual? A new style of storytelling (both for the series and for Nintendo)?
This game is an absolute mongrel. And I can't wait to play it. But I'm not expecti...
Trilogy is a helluva compilation. Great buy, regardless.
But changing your mind over one review? C'mon.
I expect reviews to be all over the map for this one. It has the potential to be a divisive game, love-it or hate-it. Or, in some cases, an "I recognize the quality, but it's not really my bag"-type reviews. 8's. Probably see a lot of those.
I'm buying this day one. Regardless of reviews. This is an experiment in game design with a lot of talented chefs in the kitchen. I'm there.
Yeah, I honestly don't expect this game to be that much of a critical darling. I expect it to be divisive as hell, actually.
But for me? Yeah, it'll probably be my GOTY. The first 3rd person 3D Metroid? The first proper third person console Metroid since 1994? Yes, please.
Warning for anyone who hasn't watched: that could be a BIG spoiler at the one-minute market.
The ice level (cryosphere) look phenomenal, and that's what I've been looking forward to most (Phendrana was my favorite area in the original Prime). But the fire level (pyrosphere) is looking pretty darn good, too. How'd they fit Mt. Doom on a space ship? ; )
"Who would you choose instead?"

Eh, in these types of lists, there are always going to be omissions.
Rockstar North didn't even get an honorable mention. No Retro Studios? Team Ninja (Other M looks fantastic)? Kojima Productions? Mistwalker? EAD-SPD3 (the Zelda team)? SCE/Santa Monica? Irraional/2K Boston? Bethesda Softworks? Heck, I'd toss EA Tiburon in over Harmonix. ...
I gotta say...I was VERY worried when I read about this game's control scheme. But the more I read about it, the more hyped I get. I don't know what it is, but there's something about it that has caught my attention. I'm looking over at my Wii remote thinking, "man, how are they going to pull all of this off?"
The idea of simplicity leading to more inventive and intricate design choices is so obvious that it's amazing no one else really though...
...I got nothin'. Wow. From the assault on K-2L to the death of the hatchling. In about a minute. That retrospective couldn't have been any better. Haunting music.
That's the part I found most interesting, too. He harbored a bit of a bias initially. Competing with the PS3 or 360 were never going to be the Wii's forte, but it's still a capable little machine. It's just that, by and large, devs haven't really even tried. They've put out sub-PS2 level stuff, and the Wii is capable of so much more.
"First, multiplayer. Yes, the final version will support up to eight players online (no voice chat, though…bummer), but to mimic the classic Nintendo 64 experience Eurocom has enabled four player split screen for local team and deathmatch modes."

No VC? Frick. That stinks.
I'd probably still buy this over Con2 (even with its do...
Well, apparently it DID play at random, if you were lucky enough to be watching GT last night. But it's been yanked.

Oh well. I'm sure we'll see it soon on TV.
Well, they got the top two right.
They rated Prime 2 BELOW the GBA 'Troids? Really? I love those games and have played through them a few times, but there's no way I'd put 'em above Echoes.
