I read elsewhere they'll be using a pretty grainy filter on some portions, so it looks like they're trying to cross L4D with HOD:Overkill.

Maybe it'll work, but it's gotta be a lot less derivative. You can charitably call Conduit a bit of a homage to the FPS genre, and since it's HVS first real big project, I give 'em some leeway (plus, the online rocks). My purchase was as much for the game as for other developers to take note that you can be successful with a new IP instead o...

"The control is less horrible than you might fear. However, it falls well short of a vanilla dual analog scheme – not to mention mouse and keyboard."

I actually laughed when I read that.

If you'd take a dual analog controller over quicker, more precise IR controls, you have no right putting the word "horrible" (as a warning) into a comment on playability. The scheme is fully customizable. If you can't make Conduit control better than a dual anal...

...meaning glow stick waggle? And rotating the remote instead of a button press for secondary fire?

That doesn't change Extraction from being another on-rails shooter. It is what it is. If HVS can make a decent FPS, Visceral ought to be able to follow the RE4 template for a decent third-person shooter/survival game. Wii already has plenty of rail shooters.

Hmm...sounds like they're trying to cross Left 4 Dead (which we all knew was an aim) with House of the Dead: Overkill. Could be interesting. Could be too derivative.

I'm willing to look past some of the generic stuff in Conduit because it's their first foray into the FPS field. But they're going to have to do more than a homage with Grinder.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but Galaxy overrated? It's as innovative a platformer as we've seen this gen. I'd put the overrated stamp on Halo 3 (a fantastic game, but it's not the game of all games as some made it out to be; I thought Bioshock was way better). Diff'rent strokes, I guess. Personally, I could care less about the Wii's graphical shortcomings. If it's a good game, it's a good game. Visual horsepower alone doesn't make a good game.

Looks nice. Didn't look bad to begin with in 480p, though, IMO.

Art direction > raw graphical power
(See: Metroid Prime 3)

I'm a little more excited for this than for Grinder. The Conduit is fantastic and fulfills my online shooting jones, but Wii has some great brawlers (NHM and MadWorld), and I can't wait to see what HVS does with this.

The date on that is...June 18th? Wasn't this posted before?

Prime 3 is a lot to live up to. It was the first FPS/FPA to really nail the controls on Wii, and Retro's art team might be the best in the business (just pop in the original Prime and look how well it has aged). I think that might be why Conduit is getting some lower scores.

(Plus, HVS' between-mission story scenes are downright archaic.)

I beat Corruption, but Conduit's online is INSANE. You have to have a small bounding box and melee set to a button press, or el...

The screen shots have been RIDICULOUS on this game. I hope that it looks as good in motion.

Seems fair. The more I play the game, the more conflicted I get with the graphics, for the reasons mentioned in this review.

I hadn't played much FPS lately, so I've been tuning up in the single player. Went online tonight and had my ass handed to me. It is TOUGH out there. I prefer a rectangular dead zone, but that really doesn't cut it online.

I hadn't played FPS much since Prime 3 and Bioshock, so I've been playing through the single player, trying to sharpen up a bit.

Went online for the first time tonight, and JEEZ there are some tough gamers playing. Best I did so far was 4th in ASE football.

There were some blocky and muddy textures, but overall, I thought Twilight Princess looked great. Still holds up well, IMO (not as well as WW, though).

I think it's safe to say that the map is gonna be huge (bigger than TP), so with a world that big, there's only so much you can push out of the Wii. Motion Plus will be the attraction here, not the graphics.

Same here. 8.5 seems about right. It's not AAA (some people hyped it as such, but I never bought that), but it's pretty solid.

And this game is now the standard for FPS control; nothing controls better on any console this gen. You'd think that would matter to more "hardcore" reviewers. If Crysis was lauded for visuals, Conduit should get more credit for this "everything but the kitchen sink" control scheme.

I'm still getting some practice in o...

Madvillain -- I'm not sure we can say Nintendo always plays it safe. The Wii was actually a pretty big risk for them; they decided to just stop competing graphically with Sony and Microsoft. No one could've guessed they'd end up going from worst-seller to first.

And look at how roundly criticized big N got for Wind Waker, just for the change in art style (which turned out to be a fantastic decision, as the game still holds up now). I think it's a bit understandable that they d...

Oh yeah, it's an EXCELLENT game. I dropped 70 hours into it and loved every second. But the gameplay staples have been there for over a decade now. I think everyone is waiting for the next "Holy #$%&!" moment, like when they played Ocarina for the first time.

6114d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

I'm sure they did. And like everyone else, they have no idea when Sony will launch their motion controller.
