In the "mascot" spinoffs (Strikers, Sluggers, Party, etc.) Mario isn't original, because those are fairly by-the-numbers games.

But the dedicated Mario games? I think Galaxy was plenty original. Great level design throughout, IMO.

"There are plenty of amazing Mario games but truth be told there are just too many bad ones too. He pops up everywhere. Yeah, I do like his games but I don’t like how he seems to be in a new game every month and half of them turn out crap anyway."

Well, the crap games are the "mascot" games -- Strikers, Sluggers, etc.

ACTUAL Mario games -- dedicated platformers -- are always good. Sunshine was probably the least well reviewed of th...

"Because of this, a few Japanese gamers are running wild with a rumor that the latest edition of Famitsu has been delayed due to a Nintendo announcement. ...Right now, though, you should keep in mind that all of this is complete speculation. There’s a possibility that there really is no announcement and that Miyamoto may not be talking about any new game(s) on Saturday."

oobob -- Same here. I play Conduit often (and Metroid) because it's a different (I would say BETTER) way to play a console FPS. Dual analog is clunky, period. Now put IR/pointer controls in Halo, and I might be interested in playing it again.

Regarding the "hardcore" versus "casual" debate...I just don't understand when gore, swearing or bouncing breasts made a game "core." It makes it "mature," sure. But I think of "hardcore"...

NecrumSlavery -- There are definitely some games that have underperformed on Wii. But you picked the wrong ones.

RE4 sold over 1.5 million copies. And that's for a port of an old game.
Sega was happy with Conduit's opening, and MadWorld has sold steadily enough that they consider it successful (it's a niche game that sold niche numbers).

Ico, Psychonauts and Okami are all fantastic PS2 games. And they didn't sell like Halo. That didn't make them failures. ...

Conduit sold 70,000 copies in its first month, and that was considered a flop.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009...

Muramasa sells half that much, and it's "slightly underwhelming"?
(And I don't think Muramasa was significantly cheaper to make, either. Vanillaware is meticulous with their art and graphics.)

Weird standards.

But a...

I wouldn't have heard of Spyborgs at all had I not checked IGN months ago. That's the absolute ONLY thing I heard about it.

Dead Space got some attention here on N4G, but I don't recall seeing a big advertising push for it.

For some reason, people think it's always the hardware manufacturers who do the marketing. For every stinkin' game. So people will blame Nintendo, when it's really the publishers and developers who failed both of these games in the marketing de...

No More Heroes "flopped" initially. Now it's sitting around 400,000 copies and was green-lit for a sequel.

Bloom Blox was considered a "flop," then it sold half a million...and was green-lit for a sequel.

Conduit? "Flopped." Until Sega said they sold 250,000 to 300,000 out of the gate.

MadWorld? "Flopped." Until Sega said the game did OK (probably about 300,000 total now after price drops).

Even t...

I hope Bayonetta does alright. The Platinum/Clover folks know how to make a damn good game.

I'm surprised (in a good way) that Sin and Punishment 2 scored as well as it did.

You'd think that NMH would be the biggest sore thumb here, the one that made people go "oh, wait a sec here..." but it hasn't.

A super gory, super niche, hyper stylized beat 'em up ends up selling pretty darn well after being completely written off as a failure...and no one seems to remember it. Short memories in the gaming industry, I guess.

Conduit has probably done quite well, too. A small-time developer like HVS? Spending maybe two years on a game th...

"Admittedly, you have to agree that the Wii serves a purpose, but really after the certain game genre they offer if you're really a hardcore gamer - you have to look else where."

Umm, no.

I must've missed something, but "hardcore gaming" didn't use to mean only FPS and M-rated type games. And the Wii has the M-rated titles, anyway: NHM (soon NHM2), MadWorld, HotD, Extraction, COD:W@W, RE4 and RE:UC, etc.

Add in the T-rate...

oobob -- Yep. Rail shooters are a very small segment of the market, and they've already been represented on Wii in quite a few games.

Visceral had the chance to fill in a gap with a killer TPS, but they chose to walk on occupied ground.

A shame, really.

That said, it's possible the game ultimately sells decently. Anyone who thought Extraction would be a big-time first week seller doesn't know much about Wii games. They profit on long legs. Even the b...

Well put. They put out a quality rail shooter, and I'll give them that. But the audience for that type of game is EXTREMELY narrow, and they've already bought RE:UC and HotD:Overkill. You think they'll rush out to buy a 6-hour long game? For a new IP? In a foreign genre for that new IP? Please.

VGC is only good for ballpark estimates (and they're constantly revised, so this is with a grain of salt) but Dead Space hasn't cracked a million on either HD console:

Looks promising. Probably not a first-day purchase for me, but maybe eventually.

Now since they've gone back and made a modern 2D console platformer for Mario...how about a 2D console Metroid?

It's possible...but I don't know if it's probable.
NMH was a "flop," then went on to sell about 400,000 copies and got a green light for a sequel. The same thing happened with Boom Blox. GTA:CW was a disappointment at first, and now it's sitting around 600,000 copies.
But Extraction isn't unique like NMH or BB, doesn't have an established name like GTA, and sits in a saturated genre.

Maybe it gets 250,000 to 300,000 sales. Even then, people will call it a...

Yep. New IP is always risky. But if you're going to do it, it's kinda foolish to go on saturated ground (RE and HotD) and expect the same sales as established franchises that have already been released months/years in advance.

Perhaps if they had made a PROPER Dead Space game, it would've stood out more because the Wii is starved for good TPS.

Casual gamers don't know about Dead Space, and most core gamers don't care about it as a rail shooter. Especially at full ...

There's a glut of rail shooters on Wii. Dead Space is a relatively new IP; new/casual gamers don't know about it, core gamers don't want a rail shooter.

As for the MadWorld stuff...umm, it sold niche numbers because it was a niche game (and apparently recently turned enough of a profit that Sega is happy with it).
The Clover/Platinum guys just do this. Okami has been released on the best-selling console of this gen and the last, and it still probably hasn't moved more tha...

It's not just NSMB and Wii Fit Plus. They have Sports Resort and Metroid Trilogy only dropping a few months back, too. They're back-logged with good stuff this year. And if the COD4 port and FF:CC are good, it's a pretty formidable end of the year lineup.

But the real good stuff is going to be aimed at 2010 -- Other M, Galaxy 2, Sin and Punishment 2...maybe Retro's secret project?

Every dedicated Mario platformer has its share of challenges. Hell, even the original Super Mario Bros. has its share of difficulty, especially if you're trying a speed run.

Now that they're doing this with Mario, I REALLY hope they go back and make a 2D console Metroid. Yes, I'm a huge fan of the Prime Trilogy, and Other M looks so badass that I can hardly wait for it.
But I had a marathon session of Super Metroid this past weekend, and that game is as close to perfectio...

It means people who get stuck in the game won't have to go online to look for a walk-through.

I really don't see what the big deal is here. It's an option that you don't even have to use. For NSMB, there are apparently incentives to NOT use the SG:

Complete non-issue.
